And there are million of car related deaths but I bet you drive.

Gun related homicides in the US ~12,500 per year, UK ~50. (US population is 6 times higher than UK, gun deaths 250 times higher).

Number of people shot be police each year- US ~400, UK ~4.

Murder rate US ~5.0 per 100,000. UK ~1.4.

(Note a higher proportion of US citizens are killed by US police than UK citizens are killed by armed criminals).

You can keep your guns! :D

Cars are important to society and the economy, guns in the general population aren't. Allowing guns in the hands of UK citizens would simply increase injury with no benefit. There has been a great deal of property damage due to these riots, but only one death as far as I know (and that may not even be directly related).

Anyway, I don't want to get too far into PRSI territory so I'll leave it there.

Excellent!

When are they going to start rolling out a decent rail system, democracy, a judicial system and better education?

Of course you are get those.
The services they going to build are good as the services the English built in their colonies.

Just wait and be patient!

I don't agree with those people destroying everything. They are punishing the wrong people. Violence creates more violence. English and Americans know that very well.

Guns in this current climate = violent and bloody massacre. There would be revenge attacks by locals and shopkeepers with guns!

Bring in the Army - Martial Law even - The very presence of the military would be a massive deterrent to these rather obtuse mindless criminals.

My thoughts go out the the emergency services who are at the forefront.

Well, the riots were sparked by the police shooting of a black man. It seems race is an issue. It was certainly an issue during the LA riots when something similar happened (police brutality, black victim, etc.)

Just to put the record straight: the man the police shot was a known gangster who was armed and had already shot at the police first. Race was never the issue.

What are u talking about? This has nothing to do with race/multiculturalism, which has been a mainstay of the British way of life since before the Viking invasions. Appalling comment.
+1

I really like it when events such as this manifests uneducated, ignorant bigots

I believe the mindless criminality embracing my dear London, is not centred on a single focus or demands - it is simply the confluence of the nadir of society, which transcend a single ethnicity.

I really hope the apple stores in london get trashed tonight.

What the hell is wrong with you? Seriously?

No one in London will raise up unless it requires one big pillow fight.
They rather tweet and post on forums saying how the GOV should be protecting them like little sheep just like they where trained to do.

Everyone's a tough guy on the internet.

Your country was a big conqueror. Now,it is time for payback. You are just going to have a little dose of what the English did elsewhere. Just endure and be patient!

See above.

He was armed, but did not shoot.

Just a bunch of football riots.
Before the football (soccer) match between Netherlands and England(which has been canceled)
Nothing related to Apple, i guess. Just keep easy :p
And the riots aren't at all related to football, either. The match cancellations and postponements are due to a lack of police resources and concern about the safety of supporters who would need to travel through riot-hit areas to attend the matches. Please check the facts of the situation before doling out blame.

Very sensible move....

If I was cirrus or comet I'd be paying for some decent barricades and shutters

On a side not surprisingly Cameron is a tosser who's done nothing.

The met police are having to call retired officers to provide help!!!!!!!!!!

Well done mr Cameron let's cut the polices budget so they have to bed for volunteers to help when people lives are ruined

Yes we do drive. Better than you, as it happens:

Code:
1979 Fatalities 2002 Fatalities Percent Change
United States 51,093 42,815 -16.2%
Great Britain 6,352 3,431 -46.0%
(About twice as good as you, by my reconing)

And getting better every year.
I belive that is largely in part to the reduction in driving/car ownership in the UK vs. the rise in population.
You also have a better public transportation system than many cities in the U.S.
The city I live in finally got it's first light rail train system a few years ago.
And it's useless to me as it's know where near where I live or work.

If I recall, your fuel costs are insane. My round trip drive to work each day would cost a small fortune at your fuel prices.

I hope everyone reading this in London is safe and that the unrest has come to an end.

Now, on with the show.

Your original statement:
Maybe future Apple stores will have some more stone and steel, rather than energy-wasting glass.

Please explain where the goal posts were before and after I "moved" them. Or can you?

By choosing an example that least exemplifies the norm, Mies van der Rohe. Odd that you didn't choose the Lincoln Park Chicago Apple Store with oxygen generating green roof, natural lighting, and rainwater capture to feed local flora.

But you're right, because perhaps "cherry picking" or "hyperbole" would have been a better description.

Thank you for reposting my images - it really supports my case about Apple's use of energy-wasteful glass.

Sorry. For a minute I thought that you had posted an Apple Store. You can see why I would make that mistake. Until I saw it for myself on a business trip, I thought people had photoshopped the Microsoft logo on the front of an Apple Store. When I finally did see it in person, my reaction was along the lines of "Are you ****ing kidding me?!!" Talk about cojones.

By the way, as MR's preeminent expert on all things Redmond, can you share with us the ETA for the 5th Avenue New York Microsoft Cube? Also, is it true it will be right across the street from Apple's Cube? :p

Thats because nowadays you cant go down the M5 fast enough to be involved in a fatal crash what with speed restricted lorries taking up all the bloody lanes in some kind of bastardized rolling roadblock.

I'm outside the Apple store Regent St right now (enjoying their WiFi).

No sign of police vans outside - although I did see a couple 10 minutes ago on Oxford St.

Looks like the Apple Store closed an hour early - but staff are still in there and the display hardware is still out.

A very pleasant and peaceful sunny evening in central London - lots of tourists walking up and down, and no signs of trouble.

What did you expect? Were you hoping Cameron would just fly into a group of looters with a jetpack and falcon punch them all into oblivion? The met haven't actually had frontline job cuts yet and I'm willing to bet even if this happened when Blair or Brown was in power we'd still have the same big issue. The police can never get it right because a lot of people seem to think they're superheroes and that its an easy job. Its not the budget at fall here, its the system. Only now are they considering baton rounds, too late in my opinion. And in case you're wondering, I didn't vote conservative, I voted Lib Dem and I'm not a huge fan of Cameron but thats just being cheap, to blame him for not putting on his superhero costume and saving Gotha - er, London City...

I don't vote, I hate them all.

I meant more of once the cuts come in.

I was hoping he'd stand up and say enoughs enough the polie are going to now do x,y,z

I dont know, just hoped they'd have some sort of battle plan before more lives are ruined
