Yah seriously I don't get how ppl get infected on windows srsly.... are they browsing porn sites that require .exe plugins or something? Just get like AVG and don't be dumb... I don't get people lol....

I won't take you srsly until you can spell seriously

It's a message board NOT a chatroom. Take a few extra seconds to type out a word in ENGLISH not 1337!
Thank you.

<<<< Grammer police... to an extent.

Also, I would buy Sony over HP any day. Every HP I have seen has died from overheating in a year or so. I would buy Dell over HP and thats saying something.

Ironic because I keep making topics about my MBP running hot, maybe I'm paranoid =/

Hey guys... wondering what you are thinking of getting if MBP Arrandale doesn't come out on Tuesday....

I'm thinking probably a Sony Vaio F for gaming...
I still want some battery life and some portability otherwise I'd get an alienware...
I know a lot of you are checking out the Vaio Z....

Let me know...

Really? You would leave Mac? Isn't one of the main reasons people use a Mac the software, especially OS X?

Really? You would leave Mac?

You know, it's not like Apple has a "blood in, blood out" sort of arrangement. People are free to buy other products if they feel that Apple isn't offering what they want... :)

Isn't one of the main reasons people use a Mac the software, especially OS X

not for the $500-$1000 markup for the O/S alone compared to any similarly [or on some cases vastly better equipped] PC hardware. I spent $1600 on a 17" laptop with 8 cores, 8 gig, and the radeon 5870. With the $1200 I saved over the 17" macbook pro I was considering, I am going to replace the 13" macbook my wife "stole" from me with a new bottom end 13" when the refresh comes out.

And if prices stay constant I'll still have about $100 left over :p

And yea, 10 minute video encodes are just the icing on the cake.

Are you so narrow minded that the discussion of anything not Mac related pisses you off enough to report and/or ask for threads like this to be removed?

No, you either didn't read everything I wrote, or just decided to take it out of context.

My question was why was the thread starter put in timeout, but the thread allowed to stay open?

People can buy whatever they want. But a mac forum is not likely to be a good source of information on PC based laptops. I would think that would be obvious to anyone who bothers to stop and think about it.

I've got one for you guys--brand new laptop announced this weeked:

1) 17.3 inch scree
2) Arrandale
3) ATI 5730 for DX 11
4) nice form factor and light at 7 pnds.

And based on the description it seems to have switchable graphics. Switches from discreet to the i5. I had read here on the forums that it would take ATI a year to do that. Guess not?

Nice man. That's why we Mac users have such a bad rep as being snobby elitists that make blanket statements and refuse to use anything except the holy machines.

The dude asked (primarily) Mac users their opinion, and he mostly got it. The "Ech! It's not a Mac!" responses, and a few other more technical responses that were appropriate for the topic.

Why don't you go back to your "praying for o steve the holy one to give us what we want" thread (aka waiting for arrandale). Last I checked it wasn't against the rules to discuss non-apple products, and he posted it in a more appropriate spot (machines in the class of the macbook pro).

I'm trying alternatives myself, and may end up waiting like the rest of you at this rate. At least, I'll have an informed decision at the end of it. You on the other hand, will have about 6 or 7 1000+ page threads of "experience" .lol.

Why would you post such an emotional response? "Go back to your praying for o steve the holy one to give us what we want"? What's that all about?

This thread has nothing to do with the MBP. This thread is about what alternative to get. How is that related to MBP. Most of the posts here don't even mention MBPs.

This thread should have been closed a long time ago. However, I guess "informed" people like you, need a place to show how smart you are.

i dont see a big deal with buyin a windows laptop. if the pc is that ballin that it makes me buy that as opposed to a mac, i'd just put ubuntu on it and be perfectly fine. just because it comes with windows doesnt mean u gotta use it.

Bigger, heavier, no illuminated keys, MSI build quality, and looks like crap.

Hey all I'm back!
So I bought the asus g73jh-a1.
i7 720
8 gb ram
ati radeon HD 5870
blu Ray drive
led screen 1920x1080
amazing fan
1 tb hard drive

all for 1700, it just was released and it's impossible to find, luckly I ordered one from a company who got 7 in that day...they sold out the same day...

Sweet deal

Congrats! That's what I'm ordering tomorrow.
Heck of a price too. Do you mind telling me where
you got it? I'm looking to order from xoticpc.
Hey, I understand Apple doesn't care about people
like me, people who give a darn about the tech
specs of their computers. So I'm done with them.
My next phone will probably being an Android one
too. My iPhone is nice but I was just checking out
someone's Droid and it's just as nice. Guess Apple
doesn't need my stinkin money. So long Steve!

I agree with you totally... but why is that 90% of people on the internet who are "grammer police" can't even spell the damn word right?

It's grammAAAAAr.

Quick, somebody make a snarky lolcat about this internet meme.

LOL, thats better than this whole joke of a thread. This needs to be closed, now that Z28 bought his POS Asus.

Dude you think that just because a computer is not an apple it's a PoS.... Don't get angry at me because your precious new MBP hasn't come out and don't call a computer that has gotten better reviews than any MBP a PoS...

useful thread

I'm in these forums because I have used and liked Apple products for many years. I've also used Windows-based products for many years. I currently have an iMac and two iPhones along with a couple of windows laptops and desktops. I need to upgrade my main working laptop and I was hoping to move to the Mac. This whole process of waiting for the black smoke to come out of Apple's chimney regarding the release of a modest update to the MacBook Pro has soured me a bit on Apple's culture and made me rethink whether I want to tie myself even more to Apple. Hey, I'm an Apple fan and I think Steve Jobs has done a lot of great things, but I'm also a realist and I'm not happy with the way Apple is treating its customers right now. There are reasonable alternatives out there fortunately, at least for me. But I certainly think this thread has right to be here, even if the focus of this site is Apple products. To me it's just about being a smart consumer in the end, not about product worship.

I got a new laptop just last September, so I could not care less about the update. And apparently whats important to me in a laptop is not to you.

I need reliability, high build quality, high quality display, battery life, and having both Windows and a Unix operating system is a plus.

A quad core will not help me do anything that a dual core cannot for my computer sciences classes nor would a high end GPU. But I do need something that will make it through the day without having to be plugged in, and I need a laptop that if I drop it, it will not fall apart.
I want a good display, because I have to write code on it for hours at a time, and the laptop running Unix and Windows is good because I need both for my classes.

Your needs seem to be playing games attached to a power outlet other than in your home. Because otherwise you would have built a desktop.

And my opinion has not changed. For the most part, consumer laptops have **** for build quality, no matter what processor, ram, harddrive, etc... they use. You do not care about that obviously though.

Furthermore I suggested to you a few laptops, so I do not know how you can sit there and say that I think every laptop that is not an Apple is a POS.

And I certainly do not see how in any way, shape or form that laptop is a substitute for any of the MacBooks.

Okay first of all, I agree that we use our computers for different things... Yes, mine is a desktop replacement, I don't expect to use it outside except for maybe documents, but I don't expect to get more than 2 hrs of battery (That's for my netbook).... I do need something somewhat portable since I travel from school to home to work, etc...
Secondly, I am not stupid and drop my laptops... the build quality is not an issue, just for transporting, but I'm not concerned... Also, the fan build on the Asus has been talked about and it is very solid, look up the tests, but it doesn't go above 60 degrees Celsius, my macbook pro 2008 hits 80 while playing games.... I hate macbook's fans... they place them in a horrible spot.... Also, have you looked at the screen on the Asus... apparently not, because every screen you have told me to look at is LED and the Asus one is too, so I don't understand how you could say it is a bad screen.

Um and apple's build quality is not that great... you think if you drop the asus and the macbook that they won't both be damaged? hah....

My macbook pro 2008 is actually splitting apart, it has a dent in the front, a dent on the cd drive... And my friend's macbook has the screen falling apart and his fans stopped working... build quality.... hardly....

My brother has had his sony vaio for about 6 years... it still works fine and has no cosmetic problems until the laptop was stepped on recently and the screen cracked... nevertheless, it still works....

We just have different views... I use my netbook for school... I understand you need a more powerful laptop for your coding hence a netbook is not suitable....

I did not say the Asus had a bad screen. I just know outside of a handful of high end mobile workstations and convertible tablets, the macbook pros have some of the best quality displays available. Quality in this case I am referring to color gamut or range of colors. Resolution wise it is pretty much equal to the macbook pro 17". LED backlit display are the norm for the most part, and it was a good decision to buy a notebook which had this.

Secondly, I am not stupid and drop my laptops... the build quality is not an issue, just for transporting, but I'm not concerned...

I guess I just worry about the potential for accidents.

They will both be damaged, but plastics do not take falls as good as metals. And while aluminum dents, it does not crack or shatter like plastics.

This came the notebookreview.com about the macbook pro:
Build quality is excellent thanks to the very strong and rigid unibody chassis that is machined out a solid block of aluminum. Unless you were going to clamp the MacBook Pro in a vise and try to bend it, you can't really find any flex anywhere on the main half of the notebook.... Outside of a few rugged models I can't think of a single notebook that has a stronger chassis than the unibody MacBooks.

By rugged models, I believe he means panasonic toughbooks and such.

My macbook pro 2008 is actually splitting apart, it has a dent in the front, a dent on the cd drive... And my friend's macbook has the screen falling apart and his fans stopped working... build quality.... hardly....

Dents are caused by dropping it not quality control issues (normally). I doubt the Asus would hold up as well to whatever happen to the macbook. I mean you cannot expect me to believe that the dents just appeared? If your friend did not drop his, maybe he should contact customer care.

Did he drop it before that?

Agreed. I have an old POS Windows XP desktop which I still use quite bit (use to do some gaming with) and the macbook pro, while you got a desktop replacement laptop and a netbook. Both suit the users individual needs. I should be more open minded.

Really? It's been several years since I got my degree, but have things changed that much? What sort of CS class do you *need* Windows for? For my classes it was all Java or C that had to compile on Solaris or Linux. I guess maybe if they're teaching you C# or something. But by and large the academic CS world is *NIX based; or so I thought.

Thank you kny3twalker, great responses! I agree, the build quality of the new mbp's is great, but not worth the extra 1000+ atleast to me :D... Just so I don't miss Mac OSX I plan to Virtualbox it on my PC for some things. Ty for your input. Laptops aren't supposed to be dropped :D but in the unfortunate case they are, I agree aluminum will hold up better to plastic... As far as specs go, I believe I will be very happy with my powerhouse of a notebook.... Also, Asus gives 1 yr accidental damage warranty (spills, drops, etc.) and gives 2 yr parts and labor... In addition to this, I bought the computer on an American Express which adds an extra year to a 5 year and under warranty :D. So, if I DO drop it which I hope I won't, I am covered. Ty.

Oh also, I don't think my brother has dropped his vaio, it's been taken all over the place though, it's a bulk of a thing because of its age :p....

Jeez all this talk about dropping... I can't imagine dropping my laptop on the ground..... :X

I've actually seen a kid on a skateboard at my school riding down a hill and he was going to fast (he was also holding his MB)... and he ended up running off his board and tripping on a curb... The MB went flying in the air and so did he... Poor Laptop.... I don't plan to do things like this.... :p
