I don't understand how "download and keep originals" is different from what already happens without enabling iCloud Photo Library. Aren't my photos backed up to icloud now? It seems like photos and videos take up lots of my 5gb of iCloud storage. And if I take a photo on my iPhone it appears on my iPad, so isn't that via iCloud?

So someone needs to explain the difference between not enabling iCloud Photo Library (but with photo library set to back up under icloud in settings), and enabling it with the "download and keep originals" option.

The difference is with the iCloud Photo Backup, the only way to access your photos is by doing a restore on your phone. It's an all or nothing deal. With iCloud Photo Library, your photos at an individual level will be able to viewed and restored from a PC, Mac, device, etc. It will be a lot better!

Huh? I can access my photos on my phone now. I don't need to restore anything.

Your accessing your local photos on the device. Unless your referring to PhotoStream which is your photos in iCloud over a rotating 30 day period.

Worth mentioning; that iCloud photo Library uses your iCloud storage, whereas Photo Stream doesn't?

still not available for everyone :/

I've enbaled iCloud photo library on my iPhone, and later had to enable it extra on my iPad too.
So far everything seems to work ok, but on the iPad icloud settings, I don't have iCloud photo library anymore. It's definit enabled, but the setting is gone. Must be a glitch...

Correct. I believe I read somewhere that Apple was going to give 5 GB free if you use the iCloud Photo Storage.

Oh, I haven't seen that. I wouldn't have expected that though, with apple changing the iCloud storage price bands.

I just read that iCloud Photo Library disables syncing photos from iPhoto on the Mac.
That's a little disappointing if you already have a load of photos you've transferred off the iPhone and want to sync them back. Or want them on one device rather than, say, a family iPad.

Doesn't look like iCloud Photo Library will be the way forward for me.

iPhoto development has ended, when the new Photos app on OS X launches next year photos will automatically sync over iCloud. In the meantime, its probably easier to just leave it with traditional syncing as you say. You could also use the same iCloud account on your family iPad so the photos are automatically synced, but they won't sync to the Mac yet.

I was confusing the free 5GB of iCloud space.

Hmm. I knew they were switching to a new photos app, but I hope that isn't the case with it all switching to iCloud sync, losing an "offline" sync.

I'm going to hold off turning this feature on until Photos for Mac is out. I can't see any benefits to having it before then, I'd rather carry in iTunes syncing from iPhoto.

When it's available for Mac your whole library will be available over iCloud so you won't need to sync with iTunes anymore.

Not with my 5gb (and not wanting to pay for more) iCloud storage.

I think any cloud based photo storage solution is only suitable for someone willing to pay for cloud storage. If you aren't you're better off staying with the old photostream method.

Or the manual "offline" sync method that current iPhoto and iTunes gives, and I use. But it looks like that isn't going to be an option.
I don't want a wholly cloud-based solution. Photo stream and shared photo stream covers my needs there. iPhoto handles the rest.

Just stick with that then I don't believe Apple are forcing you to abandon that method, I could be wrong though. I know they are ending support for iPhoto/Aperture but I also read they would be updated to work with Yosemite so you can continue using them.

The option is still not shown on my ip6. looks like it's still "on invitation"

I will be for now. Stuff I read about the new Photos for OS X makes it seem its iCloud only too.

Anyway, back to topic.. Sorry for momentarily hi-jacking this, everyone.

It's still not available on my iPad. Is there an option I'm missing. In settings > icloud > photos, there is no option there for me.

So, I have the beta option on my iP5. When I click iCloud Photo Library (beta) I get three options:

1) Learn about Backup
2) Start using Beta
3) Cancel.

I click #2. Then I get this:

"Photos Synced from iTunes will be Removed" 4,686 photos will be removed.

Options:
1) Remove Photos
2) Cancel.

I still don't get it, I'm slow I guess. Photos removed from iTunes? From my iPhone?? I think this new setup stinks!

I'm wondering if anyone has actually noticed a lower usage once enabling iCloud Photo Library.

I still have my phone showing 7.0GB of pictures and I know my photos have synced because they showed up on my iPad after enabling it there.

iCloud storage also shows 6.6GB of "iCloud Photo Library"

So bottom line: iPhone 6 Usage : 7.0GB
iCloud Storage: 6.6GB

Why aren't I seeing my iPhone Usage as 0.4GB?

I know it's still in Beta, but I'm wondering if other people are noticing their usage change.

EDIT: Oh, and yes, I do have "Optimize iPhone Storage" selected
