Just out of curiosity: has anyone had the luck already of having the message "iCloud photo library not yet available" go away once it started showing? In other words becoming one of the said users they are adding daily?

IPL worked for me during the Beta phase, then it stopped, then option went away and reappeared but got the error when I tried to turn it on. THEN yesterday morning I turned it on and is now working for the time being...

So I'm only guessing that I'm one of the ones that got it turned on but honestly who knows!

I still don't see the option anywhere

:(.....I'm still not getting this option, here in the UK? :( I've checked my iPhone 6 and also my iPad 2(my wife, also does NOT get the option on her iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 5)but still nothing............?!

Even if I go to iCloud.com on my pc, there are NO options for 'Photos' anywhere?!

Why are some people getting the iCloud Drive option whilst others are not?!!:(

I cant see the slide to activate icloud photo library do someone know how to activate it?

I do really need it.

I've had the option for iCloud photo library since updating my iOS to 8.0.1. When I try to activate it, I get the message: "Comr back soon. We are adding more users everyday". Is it telling me this because it's still in the beta phase??? It seems like some people have enabled it but I cant. My objective is to free up space on my phone and put it all in the cloud. Anybody know if I've got to wait until it's out of the beta phase?? Or am I doing something wrong here??? I'm not an idiot when it comes to iPhones but I just can't figure out the issue.

Maybe this is a silly question, but for those that are seeing the toggle switches to turn it on, did you also upgrade to iCloud Drive when you upgraded to 8.0? I have two devices running iOS 8.0.2, and neither has the option even available. But, then again, I also did not upgrade to iCloud Drive yet either, as I have a few other devices running iOS7 that I still want to be able to access my documents in iCloud.

Just wondering if the ability to even turn on IPL is related to whether or not you activated iCloud Drive?

....personally, I don't think it is related.

When I updated my iPad 2 and my wife's iPhone 5 to iOS 8, and also, when I set up my new iPhone 6, on all 3 devices, I selected the option to 'Upgrade to iCloud Drive', however, NONE of them have the iCloud Photo Library toggle switch?!

Additionally, if I go to www.icloud.com, on my pc, I also do NOT, see any options for 'Photos' anywhere? I see the icon for iCloud Drive but within that, there is no 'Photo' option, I only have a 'Pages' option?

I have been checking every day, but its just not showing for me on ANY of my iDevices at home on iOS8. I am thinking its based on your location - perhaps the U.S are getting it first (I'm in the U.K)?

EDIT : This link - http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/09/09Apple-Announces-iOS-8-Available-September-17.html

....under the 'Pricing & Availability' section, states the following:

In October, SMS Continuity will be available as a free update to iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library will be available as a beta

...looks like it is being rolled out gradually this month - could mean we get it tomorrow, or we could get it on the 31st?!

If you enable iCloud Photo Library, all of your photos will be uploaded to the cloud. Once you enable it, you have two options.

You can select "Download and keep originals", in which case a copy will be kept on your phone as well as in the cloud. This means that you won't have to worry about using any data to view your photos, but you will need to make sure that your phone has enough space to hold your photos.

Or you can select "Optimize device space" If you select this option, once your photo is saved to the cloud it will only retain a low resolution copy on your phone. That way if you go to your photos tab you can still see all of your pictures and scroll through them without using any data. It also allows you to have many more photos available than you actually have space for on your phone. However, with this option if you want to view a picture or share a picture, then it will need to retrieve the full resolution version from the cloud. By default this will use cellular data, however, you can also disable cellular data for photos and then it will only do that when you're on wifi. Obviously the downside there is that you can only see the full version of your pictures when you're on wifi, but you also don't need to worry about extra data usage.

I like the idea of IPL, but don't entirely trust it and would want to do periodic backups. A couple questions:

1) If I select "Download and Keep Originals", can I still use Image Capture on my Mac to manually backup the photos onto my computer?
2) If I select "Optimize Device Space", I'm assuming I cannot use Image Capture to backup photos to my computer. So am I out of luck until the Photos app is released on iCloud Web and/or Mac (and presumably has an export all capability)?

Thanks!

I am no techie, and I used to love my Mac. I trusted Apple and their updates. I recently installed Yosemite, then added the iPhoto Library Upgrader as instructed. When I attempted to open iPhoto, I was once again informed I must install IPhoto Library Upgrader. I now find there are two installs of this program in iphoto, but I am still not able to view my pictures...without the same instructions popping up! My photos are in Finder, but are all in disarray and many will not open at all, just leads to a black window containing the words "exec" and "thumbs.db". Can anyone help me?

Don't. The don't f care about you. As you had a chance to see yourself. And millions of people did, but continue to suffer. Why use a cloud to store all your photos? Store them on your computer, and back them up. If you want to show some photos to someone, just select a few better ones and put them in Dropbox or other online drive (but not Apple's! they'll screw you).

I still use my iPhone as a camera, but I don't store any photos on it and don't use iCloud. I simply download all photos to my Mac via Image Capture tool and delete them from iPhone. It's the same what we do with regular cameras with memory cards - shoot, copy the card, and empty it for the next shoot.

The more you say f u Apple, the less trouble you have. I still use a lot of Apple hardware, but now I try to be much smarter about it.
