iPhoto doesn't support Photo Library. How would Image Capture be able to read and import the pictures if they're on the cloud? And, Photostream would reduce the quality of the pictures - not something I want.

If I upgraded, would I be able to step back down?

The photos are on the cloud but also on the device, and assuming you choose to keep the originals on the device, iPhoto or image capture will see just that.
I do believe photo stream sends original quality of pictures though...

I've updated to 8.0.2. It won't let me turn it on. I was in it before so I'm not sure what's going on. Sigh...Apple. What have you become?

How can you create events? Moving forward, iPhoto will disappear and we get the same photo app on the Mac. Moments has its advantages and disadvantages but not sure I want to lose my events I manually created in the past.
How will this work together once I turn the switch on. Are photos still being copied to my monthly photo stream event in iPhoto creating duplicates when the photos app arrives on Mac eventually?
I think it is great getting everything in the cloud but a bit nervous about this duplicate business.

I have a comprehension question regarding iCloud Photo Library.

Will I be able to upload all my photos, even those taken with other devices, like my DSLR, to iCloud and then see them on all my devices?

I believe so, especially once photos for Mac is out

I'm not using anything Apple that has a beta attached to it. They have a horrible track record. Heck iOS 7 functions like it's still in beta and so does iOS 8 now. Seems like the last stable ios release was 6.1.3

Yep. I'm not trusting my photos to this service. I don't trust Apple's cloud services in general. I use iCloud only for backup, contacts and calendar. There's been casing my phone has been missing Contacts for no good reason other than it's Apple.

I'll be sticking with my current system (Google Drive/Picturelife) and using this as "test" product. My photos are too precious and I've got too many too lose to Apple's buffoonery. Especially after I hear that people are losing their iCloud documents just because they hit a reset button.

I'm hoping this works out once the Mac app is out. But as it stands, iOS 8 is a piece of junk.

Apple doesn't not understand the cloud.

...anyone from the UK able to confirm if they are seeing options for iCloud Photo Library on their iPhones in iOS 8 (no options for me on my iPhone 6 nor on my OH's iPhone 5 yet)?

When I go to icloud.com, there is a folder for photos but no photos in there, and I opted to active the icloud photo library. What gives?

Yes but not until the new Photos app for Mac is out. Although you'll have to pay for iCloud storage.

I'm in the same boat as a few others here: want to continue automatically backing up (full-res) photos to the Mac -- as currently done via PhotoStream / iPhoto -- and not use IPL to store photos, which sounds like it may glitch up this system. Hoping this will still be possible in the new IPL-centric, post-iPhoto era... (will even settle for manually backing up by plugging in).

I wanna use IPL - I've drank the Apple Kool-aid. Except - it won't let me enable it on my iPhone (is enabled and working fine on my iPad Air). On my Six Plus, it gives me a message that says "iCloud Photo Library Not Yet Available" - is anyone aware of a fix?

Great explanation. Thank you. Local storage on my iPhone isn't a problem, so I think I can utilize the first option.

My only other question would be uploading photos I take. Will the photos app wait till I'm on wifi as it currently does with photostream to upload new pictures I take? Or is the upload instant regardless of whether I'm on wifi or not.

From my experience it will upload new photos with cellular data, but you can turn cellular data off for the photos app and it will then wait until you're on wifi.

I do and I have one also with no photo's inside.

...so you're saying that if you go to icloud.com, you have a setting/folder for Photos?

All I get are tiles for:

Mail
Contacts
Calendar
iCloud Drive
Find My iPhone
Notes
Reminders
Pages
Numbers
Keynote
Settings

Where exactly are you seeing your options for 'Photos'?

Hopefully Apple will surprise us and have the Photos app ready with Yosemite at launch. Wishful thinking anyway.

In the iCloud Drive tile, but no photos appear to be backing up yet.

In icloud drive I have folders for imovie, keynote, pages, numbers and one labeled photos with nothing in it.

Sooo....

If I turn on the iCloud Photo Library, it will delete all my synced photos.

I currently have separate folders for things like "wallpapers" that i sync from itunes on my windows PC.

Then I'd need to upload those pictures to the IPL.. but can I make a folder to put them in or would I have to search through tons of pictures to find them?

I was fine with the photostream option since on my PC it basically had all my pictures backed up (even if it was lower res). It also retained the pictures on the PC, even if they drop off or are deleted from the photostream.

Yes. On iOS 8.0.2, iPhone 4S.

It's in 2 places:

Settings->iCloud->Photos

and

Settings->Photos & Camera

I'm looking forward to using this but my photos and videos are quite valuable and I'm not going to turn this on until it is out of beta and perhaps updated once or twice after that.

Just out of curiosity: has anyone had the luck already of having the message "iCloud photo library not yet available" go away once it started showing? In other words becoming one of the said users they are adding daily?

I'd like to know this also.
