Whether you like flash or not, it is hard to say that the iPhone wouldn't be improved with it. There are a lot of sites that are all flash and many more that use flash for big sections of their site. I would welcome the addition of flash, but I would also love a switch to turn it on or off.

I said this before in another thread but it was ignored:

Adobe AIR is also finalizing and coming to 1.0 status in late February.
I would love to see that these two things were related as I just went to a small conference where the Adobe rep said hitting the mobile platform was a goal of AIR and is part of the reason they chose WebKit as their HTML renderer.
Nokia and iPhone use WebKit and these were both mentioned by him.

Anything but Microsoft?

I think there's a bit of Apple trying to stick it to Microsoft and avoidance of Silverlight.

I wonder if Microsoft is thinking of porting Silverlight to OS X Lite? I hope so...

<predict>At some point, Apple is going to release iPhone OS 2.0, and it's going to cost $39.</predict>

But for now, these free feature-additions sure are nice. :)

nah, the two year contract covers the updates for the iPhone.

it's the Touch users that will have to worry.

Well if the reports of AppleTV+iPlayer are true, we could be seeing a YouTube-alike h.264 conversion dealie :)

That's a different issue.

iTunes (& iPod/iPhone/AppleTV) can now handle rental, and putting time limits on content. BBC said that they might put their content out directly using that iTunes model since their content is limited to 1 week after broadcast. It probably doesn't involve changes to the AppleTV/iPhone etc - just a new supplier with a different agreement (ie $0, 7 days to watch, no expiry after watching).

The addition of Flash would sure help to deliver the "whole internet." What will the battery drain if any be like though?

For watching video it'd be the same wouldn't it? (ie h264 Flash is just as hard/easy as h264 Quicktime). However... lots of flash is the old format... and flash is used to animate many webpages (Quicktime isn't) so could be active for longer periods of time.

Hmmm.

Does the contract say that? Or are you assuming that because Apple is making some delayed money from the iPhone that they would choose not to charge?

Apple might have been forced to charge for the 802.11n upgrade (sarbanes oxley), and that might have been why they charged for the Touch upgrade. If so (and if Apple didn't account for the Touch over 2 years), Apple may have decided to account for that $20 charge over 2 years so they are not forced to charge for upgrades. We just don't know.

And Apple might WANT to charge... rather than be forced.

Apple themselves said in one of their quarterly stock calls, that the deferred income from the phone (assumed to be the monthly royalties) was going to be used to finance future free software updates. Of course, from the way they carefully choose their words, that could mean just some are free.

you know, i could care less about new features right now
1.1.3 is so unstable for me.

i've been resetting the phone several times a day, apps keep locking up, and every program runs slow right from the start....i open up SMS and it takes 20-30 seconds to show my conversation list, email keeps locking up, and even at full signal with the edge [E] showing, weather won't show me anything and just hangs, or worse, exits automatically. something royally hosed on my iPhone with 1.1.3........ (and yes, i get SMS messages out of order too)

Oh, and every once in a while, with 1.1.2 and 1.1.3, all of a sudden the speakers will sound really tinny, as if it came loose and is vibrating inside the chassis....but a reboot fixes the audio glitch.

Flash or Java Applets for Play by Play Sports Websites

Personally I'd prefer to see some Java support before Flash.

Does this mean I will be able to watch mlb.com and nfl.com?

I really enjoy watching the games graphical interface with live streaming.

It's not the actual video stream, but they show pictures of who's batting or who just had a great play on the gridiron.

Do you think by adding 'Flash' will make this possible?

Maybe I am also thinking Java Applets.

Either way, it seems to me like a step in the right direction.

Your thoughts...

Safari crashing in 99% likely a software issue, not a hardware issue.

While that is 100% true there is also the reality that Flash enjoys machines with RAM and lots of CPU horse power. Better hardware would lead to a better user experience.

Personally I think the best thing that Apple could do would be to offer up a limited Flash capability. Since the Touch devices have a limited memory foot print and processor capability I think this would be helpful. The idea is to allow the browsing of at least a few pages with videos on them. I've mentioned before that CNN is an example of Flash usage that might be viable. That is enough performance to deliver a news story.

To be honest this is one thing I'm waiting on before I get one of these devices. Not that I like all the Flash based web sites out there but rather that we really don't have a choice at times.

im willing to bet money iPod touch users are gonna have to pay for that >.<

I'll take that fool's bet!

How can Apple charge for support of a plugin that they didn't create. Also Apple does not charge for their browsers, so if there was a Safari update it would be free.

So how much do you want to wager!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

not to change the subject or anything, and this may be an old question, but in every iPhone tv commercial including the new one the iPhone rings with a ringtone that is not standard. Does anyone know where to get this tone?

Is it really?

Certainly (although I meant a free upgrade to Leopard, say from Tiger... but Apple doesn't distinguish so I didn't make it a point).

If you bought an iPod Touch before the added features, can you seriously say you bought it because you knew they would be added for free later? No... you found a quality product for a price that you considered reasonable, and no promises were made about Apple providing significant new applications through updates. In fact, it shouldn't have been expected at all since the Touch and iPhone are running the same OS and the apps could have easily been included up-front, but were not.

(Compare this to Windows Vista Ultimate Extras, where Microsoft DID promise shiny new exclusive apps through updates, and failed to deliver big time, and are even trying to downplay it in SP1.)
