Prices have come down. 4.5M is not a lot for a house like that. If it were located here (southern California beach city) it would be well over $15M. Yes I'm serious. I'm in the construction biz and work in that area. I know of more then one house under construction right now where the owner bought a 10M house and tore it down and what is going back up is not as nice, not even close to as nice. But then you know the saying, there are only three important things about real estate Location, location and location. But then Los Gatos is a nice area if you've been up there. I really don't understand the low price.

This is a "natural adobe". Those are expensive to builld as all the blocks are made on-site and here in CA the building code makes it a little complex to build so you need some specialists.

The housing market has plummeted everywhere, So-Cal is not exempt, nor has it taken less of a hit. I think your math is way off. First of all Los Gatos is an area in the Bay existing only of residents that are highly affluent. It's slightly possible that the house may double in So-Cal, but triple? No.

It should be used for an episode of House Hunters so that a 22 year old couple can come in and complain about everything. Wow, I love the stainless steel appliances, the master bedroom is too small, I don't want to clean all those bathrooms, this could be the home office, the granite is the wrong color, it is worth the extra 2.7 million over budget because there is room for the dogs to poop, there is enough room outside for a BBQ, but is the dining room big enough for our entertaining...

Those who watch that show will understand that 90% of the buyers need to spend time in living a hard life first, although the girls wearing their prom dresses can be entertaining.

I watch this show to learn how not to act when I'm buying my first house. And everyone is always, "We need more space, so we can fill it with **** we don't need."

And because no one bothers to read anything, my guess is 18 more will after this...

They all will miss my explanation that since it's Woz' geeky house, 6.5 bathrooms can only refer to a single restroom with 13 stalls...

It is common in higher-end real estate to have a bathroom for every bedroom, plus a half bath. Pretty simple to understand. Why would you NOT want a bathroom for every bedroom?

Yup, I've actually designed several homes with more bathrooms than bedrooms. One bath per bedroom, plus a half bath and maybe another bath in the basement. Seems wasteful, perhaps, but that is The American Way.

I've also designed one house with two laundry rooms. There were bedrooms on two different floors, and no one wants to be carrying clothes up and down stairs.

The kitchen in Woz's old mansion is bigger than our family's entire house...

Ironically, the postage stamp lot of Woz's old home is about 1,000 times smaller than the 'lot' on which our cottage sits. Different people have different priorities. Viva la difference.

not sure which is worse

a) People that have no idea what a half bath is, or why a large luxury home would have extra bathrooms of any type

or

b) People that have offered an explanation, even though many others have already done so.

Nuts.

(by the way, since this site is full of Apple Nerds/Fan Boys or folks with other afflictions, I am glad to see an article like this. Great general Apple interest)

How would you measure a house with 5 full bathrooms and 3 "half" bathrooms, it seems a confusing thing to try to boil into a single figure.

That said, if it is truly 6 full bathrooms and one half-bathroom, then… why? !

It's a six bedroom house, not 5. That's why 6 full baths.

But a lot of high end homes w/ pools also have a full bath for guests to clean up after swimming. So you do see a lot of these multi-million $ homes w/ more full baths than bedrooms.

That's just considered a full-bath.

A half-bath is usually located near the Foyer or Living Room, and it's mainly for casual guests. It's also called the "Powder Room".

Full Baths are located inside or near Bedrooms, and also near the Kitchen in very large houses, for the service personnel to use.
Right on the Wiki you probably referenced for 'Powder Room'
Shower room
A shower room or shower-room is a room that contains a shower cubicle (or shower stall), but no bathtub. In the United States, this would be called a 3/4 bathroom.
;)

Interesting, I never knew that. Here in Florida, I have purchased several homes and apartments and seen lots of real estate listings, and none cited 3/4-bath.
Powder Room is just a toilet, sink and mirror. No shower.
A bathroom with either shower or tub is considered a full-bathroom.
Even my bathroom now, which has both a shower and a tub is considered a full-bath.

Woah, there's a UFO visible behind his property!

And it looks an awful lot like the Relical from the Aeon Flux movie...

I was going to say it's a blimp, but it only appears in that one shot.

Well, he used that property as a home, not as a farm. The larger the lot, the more lawn-mowing to do.

BTW, I like your farm... heheh! :D

Out of curiosity I checked the sotheby home website. I'm a bit amazed about the building. We all know 'The Woz' as an easy going guy whith whom it would be interesting and nice to drink a beer with. This house doesn't fit with that image at all. Is that due to the fact the house recently got renovated and redesigned?

I definately wouldn't feel at home in that house the way it's decorated and furnished right now.

My Wife and I attended Woz's 3rd wedding and another party in that house... Music was provided by EmmyLou Harris and her Band.

The pictures and listing don't do the home justice...

It has/had an indoor/outdoor swimming pool in one of the bedrooms.

The outdoor bar-b-que area had/has man-made caves as a play area for the kids.

It was very comfortably furnished and he could easily entertain several hundred people.

What a rip off. House was purchased in 2009. The housing market dropped by another 20% from 2009-2011. It only just stabilized in 2012.

3.1 million purchase in 2009. 20% drop (at least). Makes it about 2.5 million.

Unless they made 3 million plus in renovacation. That house is not worth 6.1 million.

The math is simple not matter who used to own the house. Unless Woz purchased himself in 2009 and redesigned it. They are over pricing it.

I seriously doubt a 3 million renovacation projection for a home purchased in 2009.

Wow. Thats a nice house. If only I had anywhere close to the amount of money i'd need to buy it...

I don't think he built this house. He might have given an architect input into what he wanted. Maybe he even roughly laid out and designed much of it. But built? No. :)
