I'm sure people are going to be upset, but people are always upset. What I don't get is why leave people confused?

If they're not going to be fully compatible, call them the APP3s.

Since my ears can't tell the difference, and I charge my AirPods case with MagSafe or Apple Watch charger, I am merely annoyed by the news.

However, I would like to know the technical limitations, if any. Perhaps if this "new" AirPods Pro was named AirPods Pro 3, we would be less annoyed.

Also, why does lossless audio require Apple Vision Pro?

Guys. What do you want? They need arguments to sell these new USB-C enabled devices.

they actually used to do this with the iPods.
Introduce new features, but keep the model number the same as the previous just to be confusing.
iPod 5.5
Makes no sense

ok, so on top of the $3499 for the VisionPro you need to spend $249 for the new AirPods Pro, and then not forget an iPhone 15pro max starting at $1199 for "real" 3D videos ... hmmh, need to up my savings ;)

This makes no sense, it's the same H2 chip. Giving new features to same-generation devices will create a lot of confusion. Not that I care about this feature, but it's a weird marketing move

SO these are basically AirPods Pro 3? If it's that much of an upgrade why didn't they just call it that?

Well we don’t actually know that - Apple has fumbled something here. I am curious for the ifixit when these drop next Friday to see. If they do offer new technical functionality then Apple should have called the 2023 edition or something (if small enough of a change not to warrant an ”Airpods Pro 3”..

This is what I am so confused about. The fact they didn't release a USB-C case and now the lossless feature is limited only to these newly released AirPods Pro....it seems like they are V3, so why not just label them V3? If they are not V3 then why can't Apple release the case for sale separately? Why can't other V2's support lossless. So strange and confusing. I am thinking it will cause enough of a confusion/stir that something clarifying might be released by Apple

As we highlighted yesterday, the new AirPods Pro feature additional dust resistance and support for 20-bit 48kHz lossless audio when connected to the Vision Pro headset. At the time, it seemed unusual that Apple would limit a key audio feature to the new AirPods Pro 2 when the original version is just a year old, but that's exactly what Apple has done.
I fully expect Apple to continue rolling out firmware updates for the older AirPods Pro 2 that will result in poorer performance and audio quality so people will go buy these new AirPods Pro 2 for the improvements. 🤣

Is it the same H2 chip? Is that known for sure that it is an identical H2 chip and they simply software locked it, or does it have an H2 Rev. B? I'm not saying that it is beyond Apple to do that, but it would be extraordinarily petty of them.

I don't think it's that big a deal to many since the majority of people can't tell the difference between well encoded lossy and lossless (https://www.soundguys.com/is-lossless-audio-worth-it-83392/#). Petty nonetheless if true though.

I suspect the issue here is more complex than it looks.

Firstly the lossless requires greater bandwidth which requires higher signal strength which requires closer proximity than that of an iPhone, iPad or Mac. That is implicit on the basis the Vision Pro headset is right next to the things.

This might be a minor hardware revision difference like antenna position etc as well. So it might well indeed be that these are AirPods Pro V3. Check the A-number on the box when they arrive. It'll be different so should be considered as a different product or model potentially.

Also as no one has any of this hardware in their hands yet, it might actually not be an issue.

Wouldn't this require an alternative non-Bluetooth protocol for it to be lossless and "zero" latency?
Either way, they deserve to be called Airpos Pro 3.

Lol..and btw, not sure about anyone else, but damn the new firmware improved the noise cancelling back to what it was day 1 imho - anyone else hear the same? (my ears are horrible btw, so if I can hear it, I assume everyone can?)

Admittedly I can only assume it's the same chip, but if it's not, Apple should have called this device differently. But I agree it's a minor annoyance as only a few users will take advantage of this feature

We’ll it’s not like vision pro is expensive…oh wait

The ski goggles just keep taking hits lol

Im just waiting for phones to not be able to zoom past 1x or record video without a “in phone upgrade purchase”

Just feels apple is scraping the bottom of the barrel for innovative ideas to get people to buy at this point, so we get this type of thing

We should adopt a name for this new version to avoid confusion. AirPods Pro 2v2? AirPods Pro 2.1? AirPods Pro 2-ish? Open for ideas
Apple seems to be calling them AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB‑C) in their store.
So I guess AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) would make sense.

If you are buying the AR helmet, you won’t have any problem spending a tiny bit more.
That's what I tell people buying a Apple Pro Display XDR. If you can afford a $5K or $6K Pro Display XDR, then you can afford to spend another $1K on the Pro Stand. ;)
