Old news, we already knew 6 months ago that the iPhone 5 was going to be teardrop shaped. Like a mini MBA.

bitWrangler #126:
Right, but the bottom line is did _YOU_ have a problem with the antenna. If not then the whole point is moot. For instance, I have a 4, no bumper (could have got a free one if I wanted) and no reception/antenna issues. Therefore I don't care if they redesign the antenna on the 5 (unless they make it worse ) and I certainly wouldn't feel screwed if they improved it any more than I would feel screwed because the 5 does other things better than my 4.

I thought I wasn't the only one with the problem and it was a recognised design flaw by Apple.. But still, to be honest I'm not sure if the problems I have are phone-related or (crappy)network-related (Fido -Canada).

Well, it could be considered a new product. Less powerful internals, less memory, designed specifically for use with the iCloud. The Macbook Air did come out after the Macbook pro, is selling for a lower price point, and is doing pretty well.

"Introducing the new iphone cloud, with the new radical raindrop design."

Oh.. Cloud.. and rain drop.. I like it. :)

I just hope that people who want one can get it on the first day regardless if they're in Canada, the States or elsewhere.

Thank you. That would be very nice. But we Canadians will never be that lucky.

This will either be a "boy who cried wolf" / copycat story. or a, damn i totally did/didn't believe that it was the actual iPhone case all along.

I REALLY hope there is a redesign next week. 16 months just to dump in a better camera, and A5 chip would be a major let down. iOS truly is the best mobile OS in the game, it'd be a shame if the hardware wasn't able to keep up.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

Cool. We now know what the iPhone 5 will look like. Keep that in mind while standing in line for the iPhone 4S.

Lets Look at the Obvious

You didn't See Apple Saying Lets Talk Iphones Plural on their Invitation, I have a feeling there Is only one device release. I'll Gladly be wrong but Im gonna side with the article on this one.

The only actual parts that anyone has seen look like an iPhone 4. The only physical evidence of a redesign has been the third party case. Maybe I'm wrong about that, because I deliberately try to not follow this story too closely because it is so stupid.

But assuming I am right, that there have been no redesigned parts in the wild this close to launch, when Apple has not been able to keep a single product design secret over the last several years, I think you'd have to be a pretty sad and deluded soul to be holding onto hope for this teardrop iPhone.

There will more than likely be a refresh, and the iPhone 4 as we know it as the cheaper option. Let's face it, the iPhone 4 for the most part is still the best device on the market, and for those like my mom for example that don't need or want the latest and greatest, the iPhone 4 is an excellent device. Only us "Tech Geeks" are really craving a complete redesign.

I just refuse to believe that after 16 months they will "3GS us"

Honestly I really think we are just going to see a 4S type of update.

I keep hoping they will 3GS us. Seriously, after the disappointing iPhone 3G upgrade (a case and a 3G chip ? That's it ? Oh wait no, reduced battery life. Wow...), the 3GS was a breath of fresh air. It got a new SoC architecture, much upgraded GPU/CPU (both of these still live on in the iPhone 4. The A4 is the same SoC as the 3GS only Apple branded and a bit higher clocked), a video camera, voice control, a compass and better battery life.

The 3GS got iOS 3, iOS 4 and is now getting a full featured release of iOS 5
The 3G got iOS 2, iOS 3 and a crippled version of iOS 4 that didn't even have a single of the flagship features.

So seriously, again, why do so many people feel the 3GS was a negative upgrade ? It was a much bigger upgrade than the original to the 3G. A case doesn't make the phone, the iPhone 3G showed us that, why do some of you refuse to learn from history ?

I again welcome an iPhone 4 look-alike that will be much upgraded and called the iPhone 5.

3GS was a fantastic upgrade. Undoubtedly a 4S would be a great upgrade, too.

It's just that the pokey little iPhone 4 design and narrow screen are looking a bit dated—not to mention less useful—as the utility of 'the thing you always have in your pocket' increases exponentially each year.

Frankly, we need a bigger screen. The copycats have noticed that. Let's see if Apple notices.

I welcome an iPhone 5 with a bigger screen. 5" would still fit in my pocket. I love the MacRumors rendering, but historically, the rumours and concepts always look better than what gets released. Just saying'.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber hints in his link to news of the media event invitations that there may in fact be only one new device introduced next week, which would presumably be the more conservative iPhone 4S design.
Quote:
"Something tells me there's only one new iPhone".

Gruber's comment (quoted above) appears directly beneath the line, "‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ Apple Event Next Week", quoting Apple's announcement of the special event. I think he was pointing out the announcement refers to "iPhone" singular, and not iPhones, plural.

The 3GS was a dynamite upgrade. It took the iPhone beyond proof of concept and let it live out its promise.

The first two phones were painful to use. I can't believe nobody remembers how poorly they ran, and how much they hampered the iPhone OS experience.

Everyone expects a 4S phone to be released for the low end.
The 4S will take over for the 4 and act like the 3GS during the 4s reign.

Do you really expect Apple to sell a $500 phone in India and China?

Apple has already sold iPhones for close to $1000 in Hong Kong. Unlocked iPhones are very expensive.

As someone who looked at the 3G and skipped it, I completely agree. I don't get the 3GS bashing when it was, in my opinion, a huge leap from the original iPhone and 3G. Not only that, it was not marred by any real or perceived faults at launch. While it did most things better than the iPhone and 3G it didn't do anything worse.

The iPhone 4 OTOH, had the antenna issue right out of the gait. While I didn't have that issue I most certainly had proximity sensor issues, lower volume than my 3GS, a weaker vibrate mode than my 3GS, and worse battery life.

So I don't understand the ragging on the 3GS as if it was a minor update. Sure the case was the same as the 3G but both were not radically than the original iPhone (a design I still admire--and still have mine).

...At the very least, they will make sure the antenna etc is perfect...

The single improvement i'd most like to see in the next iPhone is better functioning as a phone. Faster connections to the network. Fewer dropped calls. That's twice as important to me as the chip speed or camera res, and ten times more important than whether it's tear dropped or a wedgie. Apple's dominated "form" with the iPhone for years, it's time to stress function.

My dad says this is how companies like Otter Box managed to make their case before the new iphones are released. I really don't know why American companies support industrial crime.

Too bad you're wrong.

Exactly!!! Nobody knows if we will have a 4S or a 5 or both AND ON TOP OF THAT, nobody knows for sure the specs of either!

How can anybody say they don't want a 4S?!?

OK, let me get this straight

You Don't want something that doesn't exist yet, but you DO want something else that doesn't exist yet either...

Did I get that right??
The general assumptions are that a "4s" will be a new chip and camera upgrade to the same 15 month old design. That's it. And the "5" will be that plus a new design, 4" screen (or larger) and perhaps more ram.

So, when someone says they don't want a 4s, but want a 5, that's what we're talking about. Shouldn't have to explain it, but there you are.

God...are you people seriously this _______? Fill in the blank with a synonym of stupid.

If Apple released a teardrop design, do you think for some reason it would be huge on one and end tiny on the other? No. It would literally be millimeters difference from one side to the other. You probably woulnd't even see it laying on it's back.

I'm so sick of this "it'd be hard to hold!!! oh gawd!!!!" nonsense.

Nobody knows. Quit acting like you do.

If, if, if...

That's all there is here. It is quite comical to watch you all express your OPINIONS and use your "research" about inconsistent, and falsifiable claims about a new iPhone model to attack each other and point and jab fingers making accusations as if you KNOW..

MacRumors.com, you don't gotta be Mr. Holmes himself or an English major to deduce the meaning of this website by its name..

Everyone is promoting opinions with self-interest at mind, which is foolish. Of course if you want a bigger screen and more RAM, that's the kind of evidence you're going to look for that supports your idea. Like I said.. RUMORS!

One thing I KNOW FOR A FACT, is that nobody knows FOR A FACT. Wait and see.

On a side note, piss on iCloud.. Tell me what's good about a phone having less space, and being dependent on an internet connection, and the strength of that internet connection to access their stuff? Not to mention the extinction of unlimited data plans from the wireless carriers.. Or, maybe, the 2 are related..

How can anyone say they absolutely want the iPhone 5 when nobody outside of Apple even knows IF they will release it (vs 4S), let alone what features it offers.
It is like saying you hate the taste of some type of food when you have never even tasted it.

I for one am excited about iOS 5, I just hope the Voice features work with the iPhone 4 and don't require new hardware.

Dex, Have you been living under a rock for the past 8 months? The person you quoted was going off of everything that has been said about the upcoming iPhone in regards to 4S=old form factor and 5=new form factor!!

Quit hiding behind that screen and chastising people you little squirt and lighten up! If Apple doesn't release a new form factor (the iPhone 5 for those living under rocks), I'm going to be quite disappointed. I'm sick of the brick they call the iPhone 4!!

Oh, and I have three times the Apple products you have, so THERE! :)
