I cant believe some people on here would think the i4 will get a redesign and the all new i5 will look like the old i4 case. That just doesnt make sense to me. The way I see it is the i5 will be shown with an all new design (teardrop) and the low-end 4s, if shown will look just the same as its predecessor.

No people. There isn't going to be a case redesign. The current phone looks awesome! Why would you replace a design (thereby increasing costs) in order to make something that looks worse when no one is tired of the current design?

Agreed. I saw them way back on this is my next and just dismissed them. But it feels like it fits. Cheaper, smaller phone that has the aluminum back, much less flash storage to compete with Android. And an big spec upgrade in the iPhone 4 shell.

How would the new voice recognition in iOS5 run with the cheaper internals?

I guess we'll find out on 4 October.

As for the question about voice, the current round of rumours are suggesting that it will only be available on the iPhone 5 because it will have the increased ram (1gb) and faster processor (A5) needed to run it effectively. However, again we won't find out until 4 October.

Well many of us are tired of a 3.5" screen. If they can make the <whatever it is called> noticeably larger and still keep the iPhone 4's shape, fine. But if still a 3.5" screen I will be disappointed.

Because there have been many reports that the design fell out of favor with upper management. They got a lot of grief from antennagate and the glass back shattering.

And worse is your current opinion based on not seeing what's to come.

If there isn't a redesign or larger screen, then I probably won't buy. I feel like if the teardrop rumors were false, and Apple was only planning on releasing one new iPhone, they would have planted more information suggesting only a 4S.

I think we'll see two versions, especially after such a long life cycle for the iPhone 4.

Why would any company release a new product that looks identical to its previous model? New product has to look different to keep up with design changes in the overall market.

Yes the i4 does look great, but why shouldnt Apple make it look even more awesome. Also what do you think the designers at Apple are actually doing, sitting around chatting about old designs?

I dunno, but you can ask Apple 2 years ago.

Um, Apple's MacBook line (save for the Air more recently) have all looked very similar to their previous design for a couple of years or so (maybe with slight changes), yet those seem to sell rather okay. Also, there is only a very slight change between the look of the iPad and iPad 2. It's not like Apple has to redesign completely each year.

Fair point but when the 3gs was released Apple didnt really have much if any competition. No need to change the design then really is there?

Anyway when we see the new device I'll be really disapointed if theres no redesign.

But I'll still buy it lol

I think that there are two major factors conspiring here to create a major disappointment come the 4th.

First is the longer than normal wait for the 5. Given this length of time, the expectations are even higher than normal for Apple to "wow" everyone. "What have they been doing for the last year and a half" folks will say if we effectively get an 4 with an A5/8MP and maybe a RAM bump. A release that is predicated on the features of iOS5 alone will be viewed as a major disappointment.

Second is the competition and the marketplace. Unlike the tablet world, there is definite competition in the smartphone space. While it's easy to dismiss Android as a "race to the bottom", the last thing Apple wants to do is to allow Android to get a stronger foothold and use that numbers advantage to further erode marketshare at the top end. Just like Microsoft, GOOG will likely eventually get their ecosystem together through sheer force of will (and gobs of money). A letdown know when GOOG is on a tear would not be a good thing.

So let's hope that Apple still has the pedal to the metal and regardless of exact form factor, that the number of hardware enhancements will continue to keep the iPhone bleeding edge enough to keep that mindshare advantage.

I hope it was purposefully leaked to teach all the case manufacturers a lesson as they sunk money into something that was not true.

IPhone 4s, not sure if want.

IPhone 5, do want!!

OK, let me get this straight

You Don't want something that doesn't exist yet, but you DO want something else that doesn't exist yet either...

Did I get that right??

For a moment there I got confused.

Why don't you just wait for Tuesday and maybe you will actually want what DOES Exist.

I know I will buy whatever it is, I need a new phone NOW!!

iPhone 5

The new iPhone WILL be called the iPhone 5, it doesn't matter if it looks the same (or slightly different) on the outside to the 4, it is going to be the 5th generation model so it will be called iPhone 5.

I think the reason you have not seen any leaked parts or images of new designs is because there aren't any! If there were, they would have been leaked by now, just like the N94 parts we have seen. Right now there must be at least a million iPhone 5's in storage in China and by now someone would have sneaked one out and shown it off especially if it was a different shape. But my guess is they looked at it and thought - it looks the same as the old one, so who would want to see it?

I don't believe that Apple will release two phones either - they never have before and they have no need to do it now. Hell, they could keep selling the 3GS if they wanted, it will run iOS 5 after all.

The trouble is, people on this (and other) forums think that everyone else in the general population is waiting on the edge of their seats for this new phone too, but they just aren't and Apple knows this. Apple knows that there are a lot of people still using 3G and 3GS iPhones. These people are at the end of their 2 year contracts and are ready to upgrade to a new iPhone.

I can't see why some of you think that if they don't change the outer shell they would be in trouble. Remember, they kept the same design for the 3G and the 3GS and nobody complained - they sold loads of them. Most people, will buy a case anyway, so why should you care what it looks like at all. In fact, if it does not have a teardrop shape, then perhaps some enterprising case maker might design a case that is that shape and sell it to all the people who wanted it to be!

Also, to the whiners who say "well that's it, if the phone does not look different on the outside, then I'm going to buy XYZ Android phone" (I think there's about 3 of those so far on here), I say go on then, put your (or more likely, your parents) money where your mouth is and buy your Android phone - it will suck and every day you'll wish you'd bought the iPhone for the duration of your contract.

Anyway, not long to wait now - I just want iOS 5, Lion, iCloud and iTunes to be released on the 4th (or 5th if they want to do the whole 5's thing). I'm not going to be buying the new iPhone whatever it looks like, but I'll still be getting a new iPhone without spending a penny!

Anyone else would feel kind of screwed by having gotten the 4 if all they do with the new iphone is (update the chip and camera to match competition and) fix the antenna?
Isn't that a recognition that it did have a clear antenna problem?
I wish they would offer those of us who got the 4 a good deal to exchange the 4 against the new one.. (just the 229$ they charge when you if you break yours and need a new one, but they would give you the 5 -or 4S) although I would hope for trade +100$)..

Huh, I don't understand this logic at all. You feel screwed that you got a 4 because the 5 won't be a major change? Isn't that kinda opposite?

As for the antenna, as has been repeated adnauseum, Apple did admit that there was an issue with the antenna if you held it in a particular way. They offered anyone who was having an issue with it a free bumper. They've subsequently stopped doing that and lo and behold they've still sold another gazillion 4's. Given that I'd say that while it may be an issue, for some, that it obviously hasn't been the show stopper that some made (and apparently still make) it out to be. If you're having an issue with the antenna then you should have gotten a bumper. If you purchased after the bumper program was over then you probably knew about the problem and either should have never bought the thing or taken it back once you observed the problem. If you aren't having a problem then I guess it's not a problem.

Half the planet.

I hope that thing is real.

I move to Germany in two weeks and will need a new phone (goodbye droid x, can't wait to be on an iPhone again). That form factor looks awesome.

The whole invite simply reads - on October 4, at 10am, at whatever location, there will be a message about the iPhone. Done.

The bottom comment about let's talk iPhone is probably a hint at the new talk features.

That's it. No hint of ancient aliens or anything.

Exactly what the invite is saying. The rest we will see the 4th. :D

No, I of course wouldn't mind if there were some specs changes, because it's normal that newer models get updated with newer tech developments and their diminishing cost (more memory, more pixel cam, etc.).
And I would, as you say, feel "less screwed" if these were minor.
However, this doesn't apply to the antenna. It was nothing "technical", just very bad design.
So I would feel screwed because they should never have sold the 4 and should have recalled them and reconceive and redesign them. But since that cost too much, they sold the flawed 4.
Of course, I bought it.. But just because all the other phones were even crappier under their "good design" and "normal working condition".. ;)

Well, it could be considered a new product. Less powerful internals, less memory, designed specifically for use with the iCloud. The Macbook Air did come out after the Macbook pro, is selling for a lower price point, and is doing pretty well.

"Introducing the new iphone cloud, with the new radical raindrop design."

Right, but the bottom line is did _YOU_ have a problem with the antenna. If not then the whole point is moot. For instance, I have a 4, no bumper (could have got a free one if I wanted) and no reception/antenna issues. Therefore I don't care if they redesign the antenna on the 5 (unless they make it worse ;) ) and I certainly wouldn't feel screwed if they improved it any more than I would feel screwed because the 5 does other things better than my 4.

Honestly I really think we are just going to see a 4S type of update. But I don't get how apple doesn't think they have to offer a bit more choice. Ya I know not all of you want a bigger screen but a lot of people do including me.

I still love the iphone 4 form factor so I don't have a problem with that but my thumbs want a bit more space ;)
