It would be angled while on a table, uncomfortable to hold, and the teardrop shape limits potential space for components as opposed to a flat back

If u look at the teardrop case design, it is so subtle. I believe u wouldn't really even feel a difference let alone feel awkward in your hands. Obviously the design came from somewhere. And I'm sure apple has considered the fact that the phone is held in landscape for basically everything but talking on the phone. So I think if it has any taper at all it will be perfectly natural.

And the biggest component is the camera. Which is why the top would be "fatter" then the bottom. A slight taper would give the illusion that the device is thinner then it actually is. The same concept was used on iPad 2 with the beveled edge. It was done to make the iPad look thinner.

My original point was why give the i4 a redesign and new name (4s) but make the i5 the same design as the i4 which is what some folks on here have been sayin. That doesnt make sense to me.

It doesnt make sense becasue u got it backwards. The 4s was ALWAYS the name given to the device that would be a spec bumped iP4. The i5 was ALWAYS the redesigned device. NO ONE has said otherwise. At least no one with an IQ over 50. Lol

No people. There isn't going to be a case redesign. The current phone looks awesome! Why would you replace a design (thereby increasing costs) in order to make something that looks worse when no one is tired of the current design?

How could u even make the statement that it would increase costs to change the design? U have no clue what a redesign would even be made of..let alone what the exterior components cost. It may wind up being cheaper to produce a redesign with an aluminum back rather then glass. I don't know what either costs but I know there is no way u can say "thereby increasing cost".

Oh... i dunno.... maybe R&D costs? ;)

A recent article mentioned the lost teardrop shaped iPhone 5 had an A4 and other iPhone 4 guts.

Instead of assuming it was a case prototype with iPhone 4 guts just being used for testing, they are insinuating that it's the iPhone 4S that is getting a redesign.

Makes no sense, but people are running with it.

If, if, if...

That's all there is here. It is quite comical to watch you all express your OPINIONS and use your "research" about inconsistent, and falsifiable claims about a new iPhone model to attack each other and point and jab fingers making accusations as if you KNOW..

MacRumors.com, you don't gotta be Mr. Holmes himself or an English major to deduce the meaning of this website by its name..

Everyone is promoting opinions with self-interest at mind, which is foolish. Of course if you want a bigger screen and more RAM, that's the kind of evidence you're going to look for that supports your idea. Like I said.. RUMORS!

One thing I KNOW FOR A FACT, is that nobody knows FOR A FACT. Wait and see.
Not that I don't particularly agree with you but that's kind of the whole idea of having a comment section ... for a rumor. Just because no one has solid facts doesn't mean they aren't knowledgeable with Apple's history to support why they have an opinion of the rumor. I'm not saying every comment here doesn't fall under your "comical to watch" tyrant but that doesn't mean everyone should feel bad for expressing their thoughts. If you aren't up to reading more opinion-based responses I feel you might be at the wrong place for news.

Fail. Rumors can still be news.

MacFacts is a better word.

But you so seldom find "MacFacts" here - in fact, you seldom find much information about Apple computers, it's all about Itoys (like this thread).

"AppleOpinions" would much more accurately describe the site.

iPhone 4S

1) Looks like iPhone 4 (same measurements)
2) A5 chip
3) 1GB RAM
4) CDMA & GSM all in one
5) 8MP rear camera (front camera probably the same)
6) iOS5 Assistant Feature
7) Hopefully an unlocked version for US on day of release

I think we saw the case for the iPhone 4S around the time when rumors of an iPhone for Verizon appeared.

I really think, this will be it. People complaining "thats all we get after 16 months", well yeah thats all you get. It takes time to develop good software. Once the software is done, and done right, changing hardware will be easy. iOS5 is a big update (including iCloud intgration), and the one thing the iPhone has over all Android phones is stability & uniformity. I want to keep it that way.

OMG!!! You mean the same people work on the software and THEN work on the hardware????? OH NOES!!! No wonder it took em 16 mon........ Oh, wait! That's just stupid.

I'm a bit confused. Why can't the "iPhone 4s" be just an iPhone 4 type shell, but larger? And the "iPhone 5" the iPod? Who is to say Apple won't increase the screen size on BOTH these devices? That to me makes the most sense, especially since despite the pictures everyone says the iPhone will have a bigger screen. Which to me suggests...bigger shell. Which would explain the bigger battery that Apple didn't have room for in the old iPhone...

Hmm...I'd go for a larger iPhone 4 type phone. Why haven't people thought about that as a possibility?

The redesigned iPhone 5 looks like iPod Touch 4G, thin and tapered. iPod Touch 4G is so thin that it feels awkward holding in hand. Forget about Landscape, it always pop out of your hands. Tapered design won't be good for an iPhone. Apple won't go backwards to 3G era.

A Chinees distributor sent us some Cover samples for the new iPhone 5, plus some other accessory. Some buttons have changed place and it is a bit wider then the 3Gs and a LOT thinner. And the teardrop design is also what this case/cover seems to have.

Here's a photo.. i really don't know if it's genuine design or what, but it was sen't to our shop here in Denmark.

I'm back at work today, so i could grap a some more photo so you get an idea of how the new design "could" be like. :p

my bet is on these case makers with the new iphone design.
since they're real players ...putting $$$ on the table to play.
i can't imagine these case manufactures investing $10k+ for the case moldings without knowing some solid infos.
no one has more to loose than them !

I haven't got it backwards watsoever. If you read into my post you would see I basically said exactly what you said. Maybe you should have read my other posts.

'Only one new iPhone' could mean Apple will come out with a completely redesigned teardrop shaped iPhone, and simply continue to sell the iPhone 4 without any changes to the internals at a reduced price like they did with the lower end 3GS / 4. This statement doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know.

But if you don't want to be disappointed come the 4th of October, this is what you should be expecting (and probably will be getting) :

- iPhone 5 32 GB (A5, camera, some other goodies, iP4 case) - 299$ subsidized - 699$ unlocked
- iPhone 5 16 GB (A5, camera, some other goodies, iP4 case) - 199$ subsidized - 599$ unlocked
- iPhone 4 8 GB (A4, good old phone you know no changes) - 99$ subsidized - 499$ unlocked

The only thing I'm not sure is if we're getting a storage bump or not this year. Might be the models will be 64/32/8 or 64/32/16.

Think about it this way, the least you expect them to deliver, the more surprised and positive the responses when they do deliver something improved. The more hype and hopes you have for stuff, the more you are disappointed and left feeling cheated when they don't deliver.

And Apple could sell this improved "4S" for cheaper than the 4 because...?

becasue there would be 1 CDMA/GSM phone, less ads, less shiping, less shelf space, everything is simpler...

----------

I'm REALLY hoping they do at least 64GB iPhone 5....

with all my music in ALAC with my iPt4 64GB it'd be REALLY difficult to go to 32GB...

I'm expecting an A5, 8MP camera, & 1GB RAM, hoping for 64GB, and a bigger screen'd be nice, but i'm still gonna get it regardless <3 lol

Like my dad use to say...

The future Iphone should be more like a women, with a tight middle...like my father use to say..it will not slide out of your hands..

And as a user of a Iphone4, square and heavy (Slides most of the time down), i must say he is not as digitaldumb as i thought he was.

Look at al the smart phones, big square things with no feeling at all, when i come home and grab my wife i feel exactly how my Iphone should be.. :)

Maybe somebody at :apple: can figure this out, or am i the only one in this world..:D

The iPhone 5 'teardrop' design will be revealed on the 4th. The iPhone 4 will be the 'cheaper' model.

This is how it will be.
