Magic Mouse-like touch on the back?

A few months back I remember reading that Apple was working on a case that would allow for control (scrolling, selecting, forward, back, etc...) of the iPhone with just the touch of your finger on the back cover. I would love to see this implemented with the new iPhone. Imagine being able to hold the phone in one hand and control basic functions by just using your index finger with gesters on the back! It's simple features like this that can make the new iPhone great!

More like an Apple Design

I think the design is terrible! No where near the class of the current model - looks like any other phone. apple!

Like people have already pointed out, this design is more in-line and similar looking with Apple's current MacBook and iMac line. If anything the 3G/3GS design looks somewhat out of place when sitting next to a Macbook. I like the new design! I can't wait!

OMG...give up on the keyboard...NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! that's like wishing they would put 8 track players back in cars...go get a Crack Berry or something...or better yet...now that 4.0 will support bluetooth keyboards...carry one of those around in your pocket. Two iPhone wish list items that people should give up on...user removable battery and a physical keyboard.

Honestly, gotta agree. I was very skeptical of not having a physical keyboard before I got an iPhone 3G. In fact it was one of hte things I heavily criticized it for. But after trying to type on the other phone keyboards (the kind that the screen slid out and a keyboard was underneath, so biggest keyboard you'd get on a cellphone, no the palm thumb keyboard), anyways, I decided the iPhone's was much more usable (little tiny recessed keys that even my small fingers had a hard time hitting).

Now, would be nice to be able to get a bluetooth keyboard for it. I bought a keyboard for my iPaq (which had pretty good handwriting recognition but still wouldn't type much on it, unlike the iphone which I've typed long responses on). It folded up, fit in my purse, and when it unfolded was almost the size of a full keyboard (for my small hands it was perfect). So be nice to be able to buy one of those for the iphone (but I have to admit, it wouldn't be as nice as it was for the ipaq, the touch keyboard is pretty good and pretty good at guessing what I'm trying to type).

Uh, my problem with this is I'm not sure how that would work without it all the time accidentally thinking you are telling it something just when you are holding it or taking it out or looking at something.

I think :apple: believe that this screen size fit comfortably in our hands...

Expect you hold the phone, not the screen. Look, Im not getting too worked up over thus, but people (not saying you) have to stop implying that the screen had to stay the same size, because otherwise the iPhone would automaticly become a ****ing brick. There is plenty of area, most notable in the height of the phone, to fit a larger screen. There is some, but probably not much space in the lenght. So, a true widescreen format would be possible.

I, for one, think the new iPhone should either have a larger ("longer") screen, or much smaller size. Yes, this one is slightly thinner than the 3Gs, but not by much (also keep in mind the 3gs is actually bigger than the 2G on all accounts).

Are we certain that the sides are aluminium? If it is stainless steel it could explain the seams, as it would be very difficult to manufacture a u-section like that in a single piece. Also, one of those pieces could be functioning as an antenna.

Stainless steel and glass

Yeah, I'm not sure how they would implement it, but I don't really touch the back of my phone with individual fingers so maybe they have software that can differentiate between a hand and finger being pressed against the back? Just a nice option to wish for.

just one thing to say ...

I don't have much respect for the guy(s) who leaked the new iPhone. While it's cool and all to be "that dude", that's not fair to the company he works for. Apple is a really amazing organization, and people like that who have no loyalty are just scumbags who can't be trusted.

I like the fact that a new iPhone is coming out. And it is fun to see the pix and hear about the possible features/specs. But I would have preferred Apple be the ones that tell us that, instead of some guy who's just tryin' to be cool. Then again, who knows ... Maybe Apple was in full control of that situation--and the "leak".

BTW: people who are still wiping tears of anger and sadness that something got leaked early, get over it already.

vvvvv
Apple should sue Gizmodo. This 'I would do anything just to get the lead on a rumour" attitude people have these days is sick. I guess they benefited from it, look how much page hits they got.

I couldn't agree more with the way people changed their tunes, but that goes to show how quick people are to dismiss things. It's a beautiful machine and it was even when people thought it was fake

Sad isnt it?

They will be the first people camping out in line too. Either suggesting Apple has a cult like following, makes great products or a combination of both. I like it. Just wish they bumped up the screen size.

Have we really sunk this low - that we're now arguing about looking thin versus actually being thin?

Ever since the MBA release, everyone determines acceptable design in relation to thinness. Couple mm makes things "bulky", "clunky" it's pretty silly at this point.

Seriously, let it go. there are threads specific to the legal issues

whats going to be great

all this speculation is awesome.
whats better is.
this is the black one. no one has questioned if there will be a white one.
im excited, and i think ill be getting it.

What about like when you are in a call. Slide your index finger up and down to put volume up and down (maybe it's just me that has to take phone away from ear to look for rocker)

ie application specific basic actions. Flicking through photos on photo app etc

dunno. Just some thoughts.

the seams

personally I don't mind the seams as I feel it adds a little something, but I doubt they will be in the final design, especially as it's likely Apple will mirror their unibody style Aluminium into it. ...
The seams are in the final version because they have a utilitarian use (or two).

They function primarily as the attachment points for accessories that connect to the dock connector and the headset jack. They also serve as expansion joints in case of thermal stress or impact, making the phone much more durable than previous versions.

I think you have to go back and read the stories again. The guy who works for Apple lost the iPhone by mistake, he didn't leak it to be "that guy"

the people who did leak it have no connection or any loyalty to Apple. They are a media site who specialize in leaking rumors.

One thing I don't understand.

If this really is the next iPhone and we still don't know yet and it may all be a made up scenario................

As I said, "IF" is really is the next iPhone then it's got to be the very VERY final version out, no more changes to be made.

People are saying, oh they will tidy up the case, and get rid of the gaps etc etc.

But, and here is my problem. if it was just a early ish test model and not the very very final version, why oh why oh why would they print the Apple logo and the words iPhone on the back of it.

Actually printing what it is, would be the VERY LAST thing you would ever want to do with a prototype out in the real world undergoing testing. Exactly for this reason that someone may get it out, put it down and you have the worlds iPHONE written across it with the Apple logo.

Anything apart from a very final model would just have a blank back so as not to possibly draw any attention from anyone who may by accident catch a glimpse of the thing.

You would want to make it as blank/generic looking as possible.

So either I think it's all a made up story and is a far eastern copy, or it's the real REALLY final version.

Guys, I hate to spoil all your fun, but this thing isn't an example of the next iPhone's casing. It's an engineering prototype so they can test the hardware. The initial test boards get tucked into a case which specifically designed to be easy to swap altered hardware into. They need to be able to test the hardware through several iterations, and creating needless numbers of extra casings just adds to the costs.

I find this unlikely. It looked far too refined to be an engineering prototype or a product mule. Aside from those goofy seams, of course.

Of course no one will know until May/June. And even then, if the revealed product doesn't look like what we've seen, we won't know if Apple decided to swap designs at the last minute (also unlikely at this late stage in the game).

I'm glad the new one goes back to a more classy look with materials that communicate premium rather than toy. Afterwards I hope they rename the 3G/3GS to "My First iPhone", color it pink with a yellow home button and sell it through Toys'R'Us.

LOL! But Microsoft is already doing this with the KIN. ;)

As my post above yours says...............

If it's "Just an engineering prototype" to test some hardware.

Why on gods earth would they print the back up with the Apple Logo and iPad written on the back?

Printing the back up would be the last thing you'd do to a design and certainly nothing you'd do to anything less that a virtually finished piece of hardware as you'd never want someone seeing a poorly made prototype and also see your name and brand printed all over the back of it.

You would wish to keep it as blank and unrecognisable as possible.
