I'd say many if not most of their products are retro/Rams inspired. It's part of what makes them so timeless.

True - the subtile attention to detail makes it so with these phones - the first generation is still attractive by today's standards.

I wouldn't mind a hint of chrome amidst a darker theme, though, a refined version of the prototype would seem just fine.

I think the design is terrible! No where near the class of the current model - looks like any other phone. apple!

This is the best looking phone I've seen. If apple did something like this (with the anodized aluminum) I would never even consider using a case. That thing has gadget pr0n written all over it.

They could do this in other colors like with the iPods. I think they missed an opportunity to release different colors with the 3g and 3gs because of the plastic backing. But most of their flagship devices just come in silver and black. I doubt this will ever happen though.

Might as well introduce it now...

Not going to happen...but it would be great...Ol' Steve say "F#@$ it...the masses have all seen this thing...lets start rolling out some teaser commercials with this prototype" Then...they have 2 months to tweak it and say "SURPRISE SUCKAS!!!"

I quite like the design, I just hope it sorts the issue of me never ever hearing my phone ring if it is in my pocket. I reckon I have missed more calls in the couple of years I have had an iPhone than I have in total since I first started using mobile phones in the mid nineties.

dude, i don't believe this! this thing looks like crap! such an ugly device can't be the next iphone.

remember that the software team and the hardware team of the ipad an original iphone didn't know about eachother's work? the dude who has lost it could be a software designer and has a no clue about how the real iphone 4G will look like.

i highly doubt this is the new iphone design because it's ten times uglier than before!

Same thing all over again. The 3GS was released with the same design and people swore they wouldn't buy it too. Meh, I wondered what happened along the way.

I like the design a lot... but a bit disappointed as the screen size still remain the same... anyway there are pros and cons for having big screen...
I think :apple: believe that this screen size fit comfortably in our hands...

I think the screen size is OK, I wouldn't want a bigger form factor of the external size, but the screen could go to the edges to make it bigger :D

As were the first generation, second generation, and current 3GS models.
The phones were. That doesn't mean the designs necessarily were.

I own a 3G but I personally never liked the design much. In my country we never got the original iPhone, the 3G was the first one so I was stoked about it until the design was unveiled. It went from aluminum to plastic, and I know why, but still... ugh. Imagine if they would move from aluminum on the MacBook Pro to the white/black plastic of the MacBooks. They also removed the black trim around the mic/speaker and made the whole thing more plain, and not in a "simple is beautiful" way, but more in a "poor man's iPhone" way.

I'm glad the new one goes back to a more classy look with materials that communicate premium rather than toy. Afterwards I hope they rename the 3G/3GS to "My First iPhone", color it pink with a yellow home button and sell it through Toys'R'Us.

i was waiting for 4g, but now i know what it look like, no thanks, it look like ****.
iphone 1g all the way, the best looking, the most solid feel, at the time of release the best user interface. iphone 1g is still the one, if they remake it, it will still sell.

I was starting to feel lonely :)

Guys, what's wrong with the current "shiny-fit-in-your-palm-design" ?
I mean even the iPad has a curved back, the iMacs, all Macbooks and the LED Cinema Display.

To me it's a major step backwards when it comes to ergonomics. Yet another SonyEricsson-like-brick... in my pocket? If that's what they are gonna decide for.. yuk.. Nope, thanks Apple, I'd rather stay with my sexy iP3G.

How about you guys that are bitching about the phone actually wait until it comes out...... you know when you can actually hold it and feel it for yourself.

Call me crazy, just saying.

I think the little hole next to the jack plug has more to do with the seems than just opening an imaginary door to the battery. It could be a touch sensor which works with the sides?

It is a noise canceling microphone.

I like it. I hate the shape of the current iPhone.

Now if only it had a hardware keyboard... :)

OMG...give up on the keyboard...NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! that's like wishing they would put 8 track players back in cars...go get a Crack Berry or something...or better yet...now that 4.0 will support bluetooth keyboards...carry one of those around in your pocket. Two iPhone wish list items that people should give up on...user removable battery and a physical keyboard.
