I was reading somewhere over the last day or two Rosetta about to be phased out as next OS will not support Intel MacBooks. Don't recall if that's going to be within current 26.x.x or with 27. If they're hoping to release this Air with an iPhone chip, I'd guess sooner rather than later for Rosetta to disappear.
Correct.
macOS 26 will be the last OS to support Intel chips. MacOS 27 will be the last to include Rosetta2.
Still: there is no reason to believe the Mac with A chip will be treated any differently than the Mac with the M chip.
Both will lose access to Rosetta at the same time.

I wish to get a laptop to replace a circa 2020 Intel MBP that has 16 GB RAM and 1 GB storage. I made the mistake of of installing MacOS 26 on it and it really cannot take it. If I knew a good way to blitz the OS and go back I would do so. Failing that I am thinking a 13 inch MB Air but the current models only come with 16 GB RAM. Any reason to think the new MB Airs anticipated with in this article can be built with more RAM? Or how well does the current 13 inch MB Air work with 16GB RAM?
The MBA with 16GB runs MacOS 26 without any problems.

Macs arent iPhones, you can just reinstall Sequoia…

It's good to see vibrant colors make their way back into the consumer lines. I always liked the era(s) where they distinguished consumer and prosumer based on color. I'm not sure any of us have access to such data, but I'd be curious to learn what colors Apple customers buy, on a per-product/category basis.

Hoping these new MacBooks draft off the current MBA design - which has been my fav Mac laptop design to date. My M2 MBA is ridiculously portable and shockingly capable. When leaving the house, I grab it 98% of the time over my M1 MBP. The latter is a ridiculously thick/heavy "portable" - harkening back to the old 17" MBPs.

Also curious to learn what is meant by "low-cost."

Offhand, I'd say that color may be the least of your worries. I'd be more worried as to the apps it will be able to run. If users are hamstrung into using whatever is left free of iWorks and also Safari, with possible crossover of iPhone apps, that may prove problematic for professionals.

I'm not sure I understand your comment? Are you suggesting that the laptop won't be powerful enough to run anything more than that, or that Apple will come up with some new locked-down OS that only allows people to use Safair & the free iWork apps?

It's going to be neutered to only run Mac App Store programs and has only 8GB of memory all for $699. Epic failure, Tim Apple.
haha! Why do people keep saying that? It's like the third time in this thread that someone has made this comment.

There has NEVER been any report of this being some restricted form of Mac OS, nor has Apple ever offered a version of Mac OS on any device that does what you are suggesting.

It seems like people are just making stuff up to see if they can get a rise out of others. There is literally zero chance that what you are saying will happen.

Oh, it's meant to run Mac - but it is an iPhone chip, and even their advertising is downplaying what it is capable of doing. Basic office tasks, wander about the internet, etc.

Frankly better off finding a real MacBook Air - I understand Apple's own refurb site had M2 Airs on sale for $US599 the other day. From their store, so that would mean each fully checked (arguably better than factory), eligible for AppleCare and free shipping.
haha! What advertising????? They haven't even announced the device yet. You're just making stuff up now.

So funny to see everyone dreaming of MacBook Pro specs when this is going to be apples version of a 200 buck chromebook. Perfect for education accounts to fleece taxpayers and probably all the computer 95 percent of the world really needs at the same time.

I think the base will come with 8 / 128 and the buyer will be given the options to upgrade RAM and SSD. I think for those that do upgrade, it will be close to the base price of the current M4 MBA 16/512. I could be wrong. We shall find out soon enough.

Finally.
Base iPad equivalent among Macbooks. Hope its laminated.
True value to be seen in 1.5 years after.
Certainly many “look what this thing can do” moments are coming.
I am looking forward to this, been waiting long, not going to buy new. If(i/o are acceptable) if(os is full macOS) if(display is 12 inch and not chasi 12 inch) then used 2nd generation maybe 3rd. Lower price will be justified. Beware of resell value.
Edit: spelling

Paid $CDN999 for my first Air - the 11" 2011 model, brand new. A 13" 2017 cost me $CDN1099. A current M4 13" - $CDN1399.
Fair enough, I put in the wrong price.

Still I think my point stands: the Air has dropped in real-world price by not going up at all with inflation.

I hope they dont call it A18 Pro, but something like M5e.

M5e is a pretty clever idea: They could sell M5 chips that have more defects than they can tolerate for MacBook Air by significantly capping the number of CPU and GPU cores, amount of cache, and Neural Accelerator capacity. This could make the chips cheaper AND at the same time have them deliver M5 level single core performance.

Ok, forget the the two lenses at top and bottom of the logo, no iGlasses to be announced on March 4 after all. Let’s focus on “experience”. It’s an “experience event”, that is new, isn’t it? And a new Mac. So: Experience our walled garden on a Mac for the first time. Enjoy the privilege of downloading Mac software exclusively on The Mac App Store …

Why do some people keep making the unsubstantiated claim that MB buyers will only be able to install apps from the App Store? Where is this foolish talk coming from?
