hum! i know this post, I use it in an other distro, but it don't work.. I'll try with this distro and see
thanks

@wicknix after allowing the update manager to do it's stuff, the replacement Ubuntu 14 kernel is no longer available (I tried re-installing it too) so frequency scaling is off again. Does that sound about right? Is there any other damage the updates will have done?

Try to boot with old once. At yaboot prompt "boot: old". Typically when a new kernel installs it renames the previous to old. Why it thought 3.2 was newer than 3.13 is curious. Anyway, if old boots the 3.13 kernel (it should) you can make it the default again by editing /etc/yaboot.conf and change the boot line from vmlinuz to vmlinuz.old and save. Then run sudo ybin -v to make it permanent.

Everything else should be fine. It might just be the case of not applying the post install updates first, then the kernel.

Cheers

Possible default look for next 12 remix release. I like the idea of Macbuntu. Thoughts?

That looks great.

I would say go ahead. Worst case, just bundle in a bare LXDE as an optional desktop environment at LightDM. Maybe bundle a version of the background lacking the Apple logo?

These remixes are really great work, wick, The stuff you're pumping out is really doing the platform, and perhaps adoption as a whole, a serious favor.

Thank you for your continued dedication to PowerPC! :)

I'd say have it has the default environment at the login menu but keep the others and a vanilla option there.
Doesn't everyone customise anyway? I quickly moved the panel to the top, changed the wallpaper and altered and moved conky?

Macbuntu remix is ready. Right now it's really no different than 12 remix-v4 other than the default desktop look & feel.
I will probably continue the updates/upgrades on macbuntu remix going forward and kill off 12 remix so i don't have 2 almost identical releases to update. One can simply install the full LXDE (or any other DE/WM) if they want that instead of the default mac-ish desktop. As i mentioned i'm taking a little break from compiling new stuff, so no new features for a little while. Anyway, first post updated with screenshot and download link. Enjoy. ;-)

(I am new here and this is my first post. Thank you to the author of these distros, and thank you for all the posters sharing all your experiences.)

I have just tried 16.04 remix v2 on my iBook G4 14" (I think it's a 1.33 GHz, 1.25GB RAM, and 60GB HDD), and I have similar experience as yours, but I got further that I could install the whole system on my 2nd try, but then it hangs when I was trying to do updates. I tried again to do updates and it hangs in the middle of it. I didn't read your message before I tried.

I have 2 iBook G4 14" identical units here, and a 12" iBook as well. But one AC adapter won't power it (light will come on, but it won't power up the machine). I used to have more but have given them out to friends over the years. I rarely touched these machines, and it's just lately I wanted to play around with them, and thus, I am new here. Found this thread only via Google search as I wanted to put Lubuntu on it finally. (Story was that years ago when I tried to read up on getting Linux on PPC Macs, somewhere it said the process was rather convoluted, and even I had putting Linux on an Alpha workstation that was designed for Win NT only, I was afraid of doing it. So I had them only getting updated to OS X 10.5.8 but found performance ok except lack of support and thus unsecured for regular use.)

I am now burning another disc to test it w/ the Macbuntu version (i.e. 12.04 remix v4 w/ Mac theme, that's my understanding of it) and wish me luck.

I did not use USB sticks even it is faster after reading so many of you having problems w/ USB sticks. So I just use DVD instead (in my case they are DVD+RW just as I have run low on regular DVD+R).

@este.el.paz I've had bad luck with 16.04 on my iBook G4 - it would freeze before I ever got a chance to install it.

I've successfully booted my iBook G4 from a USB stick many times in the past. If the same does not go for you, I would suggest referring to The PowerPC Linux Wiki's Booting From USB Guide. If you are still unable to boot from your USB stick, either the image was flashed incorrectly, or that stick is incompatible with Open Firmware. Both of which we've seen many times before.

Speaking of, how did you flash the image to your USB disk? Rufus on Windows is known to produce Open Firmware-incompatible boot disks, for example.

Hangs/freezes usually point to a missing or incorrect yaboot parameter. What command are you using to boot? If you have a Radeon gfx card try: Linux radeon.agpmode=-1

I just booted up the Macbuntu Live DVD on my DLSD, and this is the first OS I've used on it that is making me consider swapping away from Leopard for daily use!
One question though (sorry if its been addressed here before!) - Is there any config I can change to get the trackpad working better? I read in the release notes that mouseemu is enabled by default, but the trackpad movement is still quite inaccurate. Its very much usable (especially after bumping up the acceleration to 100%), but I have a hard time accurately moving the pointer to smaller objects. Similarly, is there any way to enable two-finger scrolling?
Thanks for all the awesome work @wicknix!

Thanks. Strange 2 finger scroll isn't working for you. It works on my 15" 1.67 PowerBook. Yeah, trackpad isn't perfect. Oddly I had to move both sliders to the far left to get a smoother experience. If you want easier grabbing of the corners of open Windows switch the window border to ClearLooks or Plastik. Those will give you visable edges.

Cheers

facepalm. Just realized why two-finger scrolling wasn't working. It's reverse of my config in OSX, so I was trying to scroll up when I was already at the top. So that part works. Also tried your 0-settings for both scrollbars and honestly, the more I play with it the more I feel like I'm placebo-ing myself, as it doesn't really seem to make much difference wherever I put it. Do you find that the trackpad works better in an installed instance, as opposed to booted from DVD?

Maybe slightly. Once you install and update to a newer kernel a lot of things work better, or start working. The default kernel on the iso is pretty basic.

Cheers

Ahh, darn. Thank you both for the info. :) I'll probably give it a shot installed just to see but it is sounding like I'll be stuck to Leopard for my daily. I've never been a fan of toting around a USB mouse with a portable - just a preference. The OS is so nice though that I may try to force myself to get used to the wonky trackpad. Thanks again!

I use mine without a mouse. Its not that bad. As I mentioned, use a different window border that displays wider edges and it's more than tolerable. The border I used in the iso was a bad choice as it's almost non-existent.

Also once installed/updated things like suspend/resume/keyboard backlight/readable console text will work. They don't with stock kernel. Also disable virtual desktops in obconf. Having it switch to another desktop by accident is annoying. Change it from 2 to 1.

Cheers

If you don't want to wipe leopard just create a 10gb empty (unformatted) partition at the end of your leopard partition. Install remix to that. Then dual boot. Full install with updates is about 4gb, so you'll have plenty free to play with.

Cheers

The border I can change, and have, but I can't find openbox's global config anywhere. Other than It gets created in the users home dir, which is non existent on the live disk. It might just be hard coded to use 2 workspaces by default.

Cheers
