It’s an option on the $1,299 2 port model, and standard on all 4 port models

Does anyone else think the price for the new iMac is outrageous? 16GB of Ram and a 512 SSD will cost me $1700, oh and if I want enough ports to actually plug in peripherals that'll be another $200. I'll be looking elsewhere.
Yep, just like everything Apple sells. I thought I would update my 2 year old Dell AIO computer for an iMac, but adding a $100 m.2 ssd fixed my frustrations with it, recently.

My only gripe is that the mid level model and up should have had 16GB RAM to begin with. Apple knows that anyone who is serious about keeping the iMac beyond a fews year will need 16GB of RAM.
I hope you truly realize what you just wrote. If a company KNOWS that anyone who is serious about keeping their product a long time they will for sure gouge the consumer on upgrades. That's business. No company is your friend, and frankly if you were running a big company and knew what your customers NEEDED you would do the same. It's just the sad truth about business.

Will this redesign likely prevent dust from getting into the display like it used to on the intel design?

LOL. Have you been in a coma for the last 30 years?

So you are saying apple products have been overpriced for 3 decades?
Meme pricing his only a recent phenomenon under tim cook and his obsession with higher margins

Most products released under Steve Jobs was reasonably priced and justified the premium if you compared them to the competition.

current M1 macbook air starting from 999 is amazing value for money
same with the mac mini, ipads etc but 1299 starting price for the imac is overpriced and does not justify its over inflated price in any way

A Mac mini and $900 24” integrated display is exactly what I want. The Mac mini forum is full of issues with all classes of displays. I’d buy a mini if apple had a reasonably priced branded display.

yes the imac should've started at 999/1099 price point, at 1299 you are entering a price range where 8gb ram , 256gb storage , 2 usb4 ports and no ethernet port is outrageous.
Why is apples pricing so schizophrenic? Base apple watches , ipads, macbook airs, minis are great value for money but then you have meme'tastic 999 stands 699 wheels

I'll be going for the "high end" model, in silver, with 16gb of RAM.

I'll also get the keyboard with numerical keypad.

Is m1 as ram hungry as intel chips?
with limit ram, it swaps too much data from ram to SSD.
That is why lots of news said SSD life is much shorter in M1 mac.

as a developer, I want 64GB ram, at least 32GB ram for work.

but until now Apple still only provides 16GB ram for M1 mac.

How can anyone speak of the SSD life, when the M1 has only been around for a few months?

It's speculation.

Apple knows their loyal followers will purchase whatever is offered to them. Lots of Bezel, Yuuuge Chin. Nice prices for SSD and memory. Yup Apple are a geniuses at marketing .

I'm not sure why these limits exist either — cost? environmental? ideological?

I won’t even mention not getting 4 USB ports on the base model. The design just kills me. The color on the back looks ok, but the pastel like color on the front is very feminine looking. And if they’re going to keep the chin, at least put the Apple logo. It’s like they were still finishing designing it and just said, “Screw it, good enough.”
I'm looking at my 08 iMac on the other desk and it DOES have the Apple logo on the "chin".

Totally agree with this point. Tim Cook tried doing the same with iPhones in 2017 for a couple of years and their own sales slowed down, until they released iPhone 11 with acceptable pricing and value. They seem to be trying the same rotten technique with iMacs now. I don't mind paying a lot for a machine that can stick with me for a long time, I own a 27" 5K iMac and I bought it precisely so I can add RAM later and use it for a while. This new garbage they announced is not something I would be ok upgrading to. I guess my current iMac puts me into the upcoming iMac Pro (or whatever they call it) category, I am just not happy with the limitations they have added onto this new design. And knowing Apple, the Pro iMacs will be based on this garbage.
