if the m1 pro has 16 core gpu and the m1 max has 32 core gpu, i can assure you that it won't be a $200 difference. more like a $1000 difference.
Apple started the 2 year Apple Silicon transition November of last year. My Mac Mini and MBA M1’s are great. I just need that multi core stacked Apple Silicon to replace my Mac Pro 2013! I believe those are coming around this time next year.
I have an M1 Mac Mini. It works for everything I do So far (Mostly XCode and daily computing tasks). Most software right now does not even fully use the M1 processor to its potential. It will be a few years before even big software projects catch up to the processor. Heck, some of the software I use on a daily basis is still using Rosetta to work. The only thing I would have liked is more RAM, but even then my Mac doesn’t hardly touch the 16GB I have (I’ll get back to you when I have to record/edit audio in Logic Pro. Then I think the RAM may finally be used). The M1 will be great for a number of years yet, and most people will invest in a lot of computer that they really don’t need. In fact, I’m considering getting an M1 Air to supplement the Mini and I’m not worried about waiting for the newer processor.
So is the Max more pro than the Pro? The Max suffix has always indicated size, not professional level. Pro and Pro +, maybe makes more since?
Try selling a Mac on Ebay and identifying the chip on your old MacBook.
Or expecting a potential buyer to properly understand the very expensive processor upgrade you made several years ago.

Probably right, but cost is still low to return for a pro machine used in pro situations. One presentation with this that can secure a new job is worth every $.

... I mean, if "Pro" were more than "Max" then "Max" wouldn't be, er, Max...
Seriously - this is just marketing folks. They need something to distinguish it from the M1 and the M2 (...which will probably be faster at single core, but significantly slower on heavily multithreaded/GPU-optimised workloads).

This is not for the naming of the Macs themselves but the chip inside. Just as you can currently order you Mac with an i7 or i9 or Xeon, You’ll order it with M1 Pro, M1 Max or eventually an M1 Extreme (😊).
I like this naming convention. It makes it easy to understand and immediately conveys the difference in chips. The interesting question is will there be a new M1 14 inch MacBook Pro, keep the current M1 13 inch, or discontinue the 13 inch with no M1 MacBook Pro? I will be purchasing a 14 inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro with 1 TB SSD. Can't wait.
