All I want is a version I can get at an Apple store that is not a stripped down wimp (16GB Ram 1TB SSD) instead of needing to customize and wait for China to make it.
Well, if you are not the first few to grab the pre-order, then even standard configs will have to be manufactured though...

BTW, I believe that the configs are not going to change, i.e. 16+512/16+1T, both with 16c GPU. (32c on high-end is a possibility, but I think that as unlikely).

My guess is the max will just have the better gpu option.

Long term though, there's no doubt that Apple will be aiming towards more cores for the iMac and Mac Pro. It would be pretty awesome if we saw an even crazier cpu option with more cores.

Most likely:
M1: 4 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores. Same for M2 later but faster.
M1 Pro: 8 performance cores, 2 efficiency cores
M1 Max: Same as pro but with more gpu cores

Would be awesome:
M1: 4 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores. Same for M2 later but faster.
M1 Pro: 8 performance cores, 2 efficiency cores
M1 Max: 12 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores or similar, probably would be re-used in iMacs later since they will have a larger thermal window. On a 14/16" though they might need to keep frequencies down on something like this.

Overall I'm a little worried that these higher powered Mx chips will lose the coolness of the M1 that makes it so appealing for laptops. They almost certainly will be adding 10-20w more power draw.

I'm posted it a million times before but I'm also impatiently waiting to see if Apple supports wi-fi 6e (6ghz) or AV1 hardware decoding in these chips.
I think they could tier the cpu's. So we could have an entry level 14" with an 8 core CPU, with 10 core as an upgrade option.

It will be really interesting to see how they binned the CPU and GPU (like M1 GPU 8c binned to 7c). Probably we will see 16c GPU -> 12c, 32c -> 24c/28c, and 8P CPU -> 6P/7P, which will make configuration very complicated.
Wait and see in 24 hours probably.

If your work demands are so hyper time critical that you can't wait for a custom configuration, perhaps you're better off buying an interim machine, and waiting to get a new MBP when you are less overwhelmed.

Your right, too complicated. So maybe we just get a binned GPU? Base config 14" 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, 12 core GPU. With a 16 core gpu upgrade option.

Waited long enough, don't care, I'm getting the 16" M1-WHATEVER chip.
Not worried about the rumors of new ports. Just ready to move on from my current one, which I still use this thing more than any other device I have.

It's just time to get myself a newer laptop. Whateveer that may turn out to be tomorrow.

While it's almost certainly going to be M1[x] or whatever other end letter they use, it really seems like a poor marketing choice.

As soon as the lower powered M2 comes out in the next Macbook Air, the average consumer is going to be confused and think M2 = faster than M1[x]. After all, '2 is better than 1!'

They'd really benefit from having a different letter in front of the generation number for each distinct chip. P for Pro, D for Desktop, or whatever letter they want to use instead of M.

I’m guessing Pro will have different core counts but Max will only have one configuration.

This has been an interesting discussion but here is my final speculation on what we might see.

I am abandoning the idea of multiple cpu/gpu tiers and going with a more straight foreword setup.

$1,800.00
14" Macbook Pro - 10 core CPU/16 core GPU, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD. With upgrade options on RAM/SSD.

$2,400.00
16" Macbook Pro - 10 Core CPU/32 core GPU, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD. With upgrade options on RAM/SSD.
