it's funny how quickly we have forgotten about Intel. We've gotten a new CPU last year and it is mid 22 and we can't wait for the new one. If this was Intel, we'd be 2+ years away still :D
Well no, Intel was still releasing stuff every year or so, the problem that once it hit Skylake, (6th gen), the improvements stopped being substantial, and they were stuck on 14nm for what seems like an eternity, therefore not being able to go faster and be more power efficient.

M2 sounds higher than m1x gonna be interesting
It seems like the standad chips with simple number will be the new "low-end", and the X or Pro chips will be high-end.
So M2 could really be the successor to M1, but it will still be low-end category.

So I think, this rumor is the most close to what will actually happen in reality. Apple will introduce a beefed up M1X in this year (Fall or later) and the M2 will be announced in the first half or 2022.

The real question is....is Apple going to start to use the M series chips in the iphones and maybe phase out the A series of chips of time...or relegate them to the lower cost phones and ipads. So the iphone pro could have the mx while the base model would have the a series?
Highly doubt it as the M chips produce a lot more heat than the A chips and so require more space. The A chips are designed and optimised to work as efficiently as possible within the small TDP envelope of a smartphone, and they do this very well, the best in the world actually. Put it this way, if you put the M1 chip into an Iphone 12 right now, it would throttle so drastically due to the heat, that it would perform worse than an A14 chip and use more battery in the process, so what's the point. You could detune the M1 chip for use in iphones, but then it would essentially turn into what the A14 is now.

Apple is planning to launch the "M2" chip with redesigned MacBook Air models in the first half of 2022, according to the leaker known as "Dylandkt."

m2-feature.jpg

On Twitter, Dylandkt claimed that a new MacBook Air model is "on track" to launch in the first half of 2022, featuring an M2 chip and a more colorful design. They also claimed that the "M1X" chip is being reserved for high-end "Pro" Macs, which could include the MacBook Pro and a larger, more powerful iMac model.

Dylandkt's claim is not entirely new, given that Jon Prosser has previously said that the next-generation MacBook Air will feature a complete redesign, a range of iMac-like color options, and an M2 chip.

Dylandkt has been resolute in previous comments about the "M1X" being destined for the next-generation MacBook Pro, while the "M2" will apparently be a lower-end chip for the MacBook Air, but it is worth noting that this does not seem to fit very well with the specific thoughts of reliable Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman about Apple's upcoming custom silicon chips for the Mac.

Nevertheless, Dylandkt has correctly predicted details about a number of Apple's recent product launches. As early as November 2020, Dylandkt claimed that the next-generation iPad Pro would feature an M1 chip. This was five months before the device emerged. Before the launch of the 24-inch iMac earlier this year, Dylandkt correctly predicted that the new, redesigned iMac would replace the smaller entry-level iMac only and feature an M1 chip rather than an M1X. Dylandkt's claim about the MacBook Air with the M2 chip may therefore be more believable.

Apple isn’t going to introduce a M1X Chip alongside an M2. Sorry. That’s just not Apple’s way of doing things. History proves this- It’s more than likely Apple will refresh the Max lineup with the M1X and this will include the current models that still have intel chips. Perhaps the following year (2023) you’ll see an M2 chip. Let’s not forget Prosser’s claims of predictions of past do not pan out.

It’s a good thing I never decided to wait. Bought my M1 MacBook Pro and have been happy with it ever since. 2025 is probably when I will upgrade to my next MacBook Pro, but this time I want a larger screen. Will get a iMac to tide me over until then though.

Surely the MBP updates will be based on M2 (the technical underpinnings of which will be in A15). Otherwise we'll be in the ridiculous position where a MBA will be faster than a MBP in single core tasks.

The phones cannot dissipate the heat from M-series chips. Your suggestion doesn't make any sense.
Apple loves to defy physics and M1 thermal dissipation will be no exception. Trust me, somewhere in Apple’s lab, there is a fanless MacBook Pro prototype undergoing intensive tests. Same for Apple Silicon Mac Pro.

sounds likely - they will first increase IO/cores based on the current process, then move on to the next process, starting with the phone A, then the low IO M-version and then repeat the cycle. Like Intels tic-toc but all within one year.

With this setup I'm actually expecting Apple to use a different moniker than the "X" - IE they change the first letter. Like the Apple X1, to better distinguish the power difference between the two chips. Then when the upgrade cycle comes around you aren't looking at M2 vs M1X, but M2 vs X1.

I'd love to see apple get the Air's price down to like 899 and really just eat up the market even more with their chips.

It already costs that on Edu & Refurbish stores, I don’t see Apple lowering the price more but instead beefing up the package with wider gap over the competition with faster, more efficient designs.

If the chip generations are based on an 18 month rather than 12 month cycle that's going to make for some very interesting product refresh intervals...

It's going to be pretty straightforward from here on out. M1 in fall 2020, then M1X in fall '21 (due to delays). M2 in spring '22, followed by M2X in fall '22.

Will this will cause some hesitation for those wanting an M1X, mulling over whether the M2X will be on the heels of the M2?
One of the biggest benefits to Apple doing their own chips is being able to release them on their schedule, so I expect almost every year we'll get a new M# chip and an M#X chip. I'll be first in line for the M1X 16" MBP but yes, will have major FOMO when the M2X comes out, likely in fall '22.
