I would love M chips (mobile)
and M1X chips to be instead P1 (performance)
There would be no confusion and it would be on the same numbering.

So M1 we have and we need P1 :)
then M2 and P2
etc. etc. etc.

it's funny how quickly we have forgotten about Intel. We've gotten a new CPU last year and it is mid 22 and we can't wait for the new one. If this was Intel, we'd be 2+ years away still :D
Are you saying you want your CPU to become "obsolete" faster?

I could care less how many CPU iteration we get, as long as it is working.

I mean I do not crave having the latest gen, I oly care about the computer to dowhat I need it to as fast as possible.

If that means having 1 iteration each 3-4 year so be it.

A repeat of 2016-17 with a launch in October/November this year followed by a summer refresh next year would be a little galling...
Why? Only because the world is in a part shortage so this years model is delayed? I'm going to be happy to toss my 16" Intel MBP no matter what comes out next year, this thing never shuts its fans off and always feels like its about to catch on fire.

The truth is all these pundits have as much idea as the rest of us. Of course next year there will be something new, and likely something new in September/October this year. They all seem to follow each other around with these comments that they like to think are profound, but which are common sense.

Do you think the M processors will be upgraded every 2 years?
Every year
Last year M1, this year M1x , next year M2...and so on
but if you think about every product individually...then yes, around 2 years
Macbook air after 2 years, the 24" imac after 2 years (2023), 14 and 16" MBp every 2 years and so on

It seems like the standad chips with simple number will be the new "low-end", and the X or Pro chips will be high-end.
So M2 could really be the successor to M1, but it will still be low-end category.

So I think, this rumor is the most close to what will actually happen in reality. Apple will introduce a beefed up M1X in this year (Fall or later) and the M2 will be announced in the first half or 2022.

This makes perfect sense to me because consumers will always be "ahead" by a number and, thus, feel good about themselves and their purchase. And pros will understand that they need the "X" features and thus won't worry about whatever the non-X chips are doing.

I mean, M1 in 2020, M2 in 2022... I see a pattern there. Maybe we’ll have the X version on the remaining years. Like M1 in 2020, M1X in 2021, M2 in 2022, M2X in 2023, M3 in 2024, M3X in 2025... and so on. Just an idea.
yes, i edited my reply after.
Yes, the M will get updated every 2 years, and so the Mx models...just in different years this way Apple is keeping macs alive every year

The interesting things is that rumors seem to converge onto something. First there was a rumor of a redesigned Air coming in early 2022, then there was the rumor that Apple will start 3nm chip production for the iPad Pro in early 2022, now there is M2 coming in early 2022...

if the production starts in early 2022....then its too soon for the macbook air to get it(there are months between starting production and starting mass production)..but who knows...if it is the mass production, then maybe the M2 will get it too, so the Macbook air can get it

I'm just trying to see the common theme. Rumors, by their very nature, are imprecise. If we are willing to assume that Apple will use the same general strategy going forward (M-series in both the Air and the iPad Pro), then going 3nm for the M2 kind of makes sense to me.

15" MacBook Air with M2 would be a dream machine.

My dream machine is an M2(?) 12" MacBook with one Thunderbolt port on each side. 🤤

Anyway, whatever the next M-chip is called— M1x, M2, M1max, M1airmaxplus.... the point is, the next MacBook Air is coming and it will probably have white bezels and fruit flavors.

All this talk about future MBPs and iMacs, yet still none of these leakers/analysts/speculators seem to consider the elephant in the room - the fact Apple are still selling an i7 Mac Mini despite replacing the rest of the range with the M1 - surely that makes a Mini Pro the most likely contender for the first M2 or M1X product? I know there was a single rumour of this a couple of months back, but it seems that now when people are talking about the next generation of Apple silicon they just focus on MBPs and iMacs and continue to overlook the most obvious candidate?

So the M2 will be the 3nm chip, since the iPad Pro '22 will certainly have the M2.

M2 sounds higher than m1x gonna be interesting

Apple Marketing will make it very clear to the general consumer that M2 will be for "efficient computing" (longer battery life) where M1X will be for "performance computing". So people walking into an Apple Store will be queried on what they use their current Macs for and directed to whichever SoC better fits.

All of us techogeeks will already know that M1X has many more CPU and GPU cores and can address more RAM and such so we will already know which SoC best fits our needs so we will just order appropriately.

Does sound confusing that the M1X would be 'better' than the M2.

The A12Z in the iPad Pro was "better" than the A14 in the iPad Air in everything but single-core. It will be the same with M1X and M2.

Will this will cause some hesitation for those wanting an M1X, mulling over whether the M2X will be on the heels of the M2?

Unlike with Intel (or even PowerPC), Apple controls when a new M series SoC is released. Apple waited around a year for M1X after M1, so no reason they will also not wait around a year for M2X after M2.

It will be interesting when the M1X and the M2 are released because then we will get a better picture of how Apple plans to update the M chips. Right now speculation is based on how the A series chips are updated.

M1X for the MacBook Pro sucker buyers expecting the M2! LOL! To much! ;) M2 has a thinner wafer (4nm) so it going be be much faster and cooler at the same time with less battery needed to run!

If the chip generations are based on an 18 month rather than 12 month cycle that's going to make for some very interesting product refresh intervals...

Exactly.

Also... Apple was always stuck waiting for Intel to release suitable chips for Macs. Apple was at the mercy of Intel.

But now that Apple is on their own schedule with their own chips... it'll be interesting to see how they handle it.
