MacRumors should consider cutting back on giving these so called leakers a podium if they take their own reputation seriously. But hey, it generates clicks and clicks equals revenue. So I’ve decided to stop reading the usual suspects clickbait articles. Problem solved.

I've been wanting to replace my iPad Air 2 (2014) the past 2 or 3 years and each time, they've just missed the mark on some things I wanted to be included. Almost pulled the trigger on the new iPad Air. I can wait just a little while longer, though every new iPad OS makes it more sluggish and the battery is straining to hold a charge now.

After months of rumors and leaks, Apple this week finally released the new M2 iPad Pro through a press release on its website. As expected, the new iPad Pro is powered by the M2 chip, as rumors predicted.

Other rumors, however, did not turn out to be true, and we’ve rounded up a few of those incorrect rumors below.

MagSafe and Reverse Wireless Charging

One of the most prominent iPad Pro rumors was that the upcoming models would include some form of MagSafe and reverse wireless charging capabilities. Rumors suggested that the iPad Pro would adopt a glass back that would allow users to place an iPhone or AirPods on the back of the iPad Pro to charge it while adopting some form of new MagSafe system for the iPad itself.

Evolving rumors had indicated that Apple prototyped multiple designs and could scrap the all-glass back, but a more feasible rumor of a glass Apple logo to accommodate wireless charging also failed to come true.

New Four-Pin Connector

A rumor suggested that the upcoming iPad Pro models would feature a new four-pin connector alongside the existing three-pin connector in the high-end iPads. The rumor suggested that the new four-pin connection would be used to support a wider variety of accessories with a higher throughput of power.

The rumor did not ultimately come true, with the latest sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro and fifth-generation 11-inch iPad Pro featuring the same three-pin connector as before.

Landscape FaceTime Camera

Apple-iPad-10th-gen-FaceTime-221018.jpg

With the 10th-generation iPad, Apple has placed the front FaceTime camera on a long edge of the ‌iPad‌’s bezel for the first time, giving the iPad a landscape front camera. One rumor suggested that Apple would bring the same landscape FaceTime camera to the iPad Pro, as well as a landscape Apple logo in the back, meant to present the iPad's default orientation as landscape and not portrait.

Apple's decision to bring a landscape FaceTime camera to the entry-level iPad in the same update cycle as the iPad Pro, while not bringing it to the iPad Pro, is sure to be intriguing for some customers.

Conclusion

While these rumored features and changes did not happen with the latest iPad Pros, that's not to say they'll never come true since we may see some of the features in future iPad Pro models. The latest M2 iPad Pro became available for pre-order earlier this week and will begin arriving to customers on Wednesday, October 26.

About the choice for the old Apple Pencil 1 on the new iPad 10th gen.

I think I know why Apple chose to just support Pencil 1 on the new regular iPad. My guess is that somehow they didn’t figure out yet how to combine a magnetic charging spot and the FaceTime cam at the same side. They must badly interfere each other technically. Now they’ve put the front camera on the desired place, in horizontal position, I think they were not able to fit the charging component right above or behind it. And since the Apple Pencil 2 can only be charged on a magnetic edge, Apple chose to keep using Pencil 1 for the iPad 10th gen. Since it can’t be charged on the short side because of space and components. That’s probably the reason the Pro and the Air still have the front camera on the short side. Because people need to charge the Pencil 2 on the top, when holding the device horizontally (also in combination with the keyboard). I read a lot of reviews and I didn’t hear anyone talking about this possibility.

Throwing rumors at the wall = great for ad impressions & clicks.
Are you criticizing a site called MacRumors for reporting on rumours about Apple products...? If so, you may want to look for another tech/Apple site to frequent, as I don't think you are their target audience.

Or are you saying the rumours that the author cited aren't worthy of discussion? If this is the case, I'd say the number of comments on this article, as well as those linked within the copy, paint a different picture.

I really wish people showed a little more respect to the authors of the this, and other site's, content. It's their job to create articles for their audience. You don't like it? Offer constructive criticism, or simply move on.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'm getting tired of these kinds of cynical and disrespectful comments. If you wouldn't say it to the author's face, then keep it to yourself. If you would say it to the author's face, then you may benefit from a long hard look in the mirror.

If rumours of OLED screens in 2024 pan out, then 2023 could result in some bigger changes like landscape camera etc with the same 11/13 inch screens we have today, with OLED being the big change from 2023 > 2024, or we might have to wait 2 more years for a major set of changes in the iPad Pro lineup.

Either way, I'll look for a 2nd hand 3rd gen 11" Pro or possibly a used Air to satisfy my current need for an iPad (not upgrading from one) instead of investing in the 2022 11" Pro.

Just not a good investment this year.

Well, yeah, it's sluggish, it's nearly a ten year old iPad.

I'm sorry, but your POV is way in the minority. If you don't think that Apple has done enough to warrant the purchase of a new iPad in the last 8 years, then you are only wanting a truly, truly revolutionary design. Since you bought your iPad there has been faceid added, the display is unbelievably better, storage capacity is higher and faster, even iPadOS which is hugely gimped is much much better.

At this point, I don't think that THEY'VE missed the mark, I think that you have some crazy high expectations for change.

And that's fine. If the old iPad Air still works for your workflow and your entertainment, then great. In fact, I'd say Apple has done a pretty damned good job if an 8 year old iPad still works great for you.

But you're clearly someone who doesn't really care about quality of life improvements. Most of the changes to the iPad since the very first model have been only quality of life changes. That is a valid criticism.

Maybe you should try a different product? If revolutionary design is what you want, you will be waiting a long time for Apple.

If you want to seriously improve your quality of life when using your iPad, just get one now. It's significantly better than your old machine. I just don't really think you're a hardcore iPad user.

On the other hand, maybe you just haven't seen the new ones in person or used them? Because I cannot fathom using an iPad Air 2 anymore and I loved that model when I first got it in 2014. But I'd rather not have an iPad now than to use that clunky old device.

Yeah... "intriguing" is one word for it

Apple can't win. While we would all love big updates every 18 months that isn't realistic anymore. So Apple's choices are to do minor updates in-between or do no updates in-between larger revisions. Either way people complain. Personally I'd rather have the small improvements so that when I do buy I get the latest (even if it is just a small improvement over the previous) or I get the buy the previous version at a discount.

No duh, Sherlock. My next door neighbor's dog predicted that last year as did anyone with just a passing acquaintance with an iPad.

Came here to ponder this. This very thought occurred to me, and then I said "well why not just have the induction charger on a different edge" but then that would impede either speakers, USB-C, or prevent you from using most keyboard covers/docks. You could possibly offset the induction coils to either side of the camera but we all know how much Apple loves their symmetry, and that might also not work on smaller form factors (possibly not even the 11", certainly not on the mini, but I think having that camera in portrait orientation is just fine).

My suspicion is Apple is using this "hybrid" form factor to test the waters and gauge customer satisfaction. That's the only way I can justify creating a completely new product (the "magic keyboard folio") as an exclusive to this ipad, in addition to continuing to sell and maintain a 1st gen pencil.

Surely moving the camera landscape and the Apple Pencil charging to the short edge would work.

I am upgrading from a 2017 10.5” IPP to the 12.9” M2. So it will be a big upgrade for me. However, if the 2017 would not be on its lasts tooth, I would have held out a bit longer. At least the horizontal FaceTime camera should have been included in this upgrade.

I'm on a 10.5 IPP as well. It still works okayish for me, but the fact that it's at 64gb and my 12 pro max is at 128 (and I like to keep the same apps on both devices) means I find myself getting frustrated when suddenly, an app on my ipad isn't there.

I'm going to hold out for at least one more generation cycle and see if the next gen IPP 12.9 has a landscape form factor as standard. If yes, I'll spring for that. If not, I'll pick up a refurbed M1 or M2 12.9

I think its time to realize that the iPad Pro is getting to be like the Mac - you get a new redesign every 4-5 years and spec bumps in between. It's a shame since there is still alot of innovation to be had with iPad Pro but it seems like the bean counters are now making the product decisions at Apple.
