About the choice for the old Apple Pencil 1 on the new iPad 10th gen.

I think I know why Apple chose to just support Pencil 1 on the new regular iPad. My guess is that somehow they didn’t figure out yet how to combine a magnetic charging spot and the FaceTime cam at the same side.
I think it’s more the opposite. Apple likely decided early on for the 10th gen to be compatible with Pencil 1 so folks with the 9th gen could upgrade if they so desired and keep their pencil. Having made that decision, since they weren’t going to use the space, they decided to move the camera.

For something like the iPad Pro, they could always keep the charger where it is and move the camera array into the screen area… iPad Dynamic iSland. :)

All those Apple employees working at home couldn’t do the same work as when they worked together in the office. Is showing in the new products.
This whole new lineup reeks of overstock parts needing to be sold... personally I feel like this was more Tim Cook's doing than any employees working from home.

Next year will lack something so I’m going the trade in route. Bought the new 11”. I will trade in when these get OLED, landscape camera and MagSafe. I won’t settle for 1 or 2 of 3 I want all or nothing.

Giving the new basic 10 a landscape FT camera but not the new Pro is a head scratcher.

Can only think it’s to do with the magnet array needed to charge the Pencil 2 along the top edge getting in the way of the internal space for the camera module, but even if true it’s utter laziness (and nickel and diming) not to pursue a workaround.

Yeah, I don't think that was the problem. Supply issues. So, tired of this logic regarding remote work vs office work.
It's basically the same 5 or so folks commenting on literally anything that's in any way disappointing with the same comment. I don't know if these folks just *really* hate WFH for some reason, if they're trolling, or if it's astroturf but I'm mostly just starting to ignore it. It's not even worth engaging at this point.

and yup, this is typed during my lunchbreak while I work from home, very productively, and when my late meetings with folks in other time zones end tonight I don't have to go take a long commute home to my wife being pissed off because I missed dinner together.

to be on topic: I suspect this was, as you said, supply chain issues, as well as likely economic factors in general

Kinda underwhelming update and Apple knew that the product they are launching is tremendously underwhelming as well. That’s why they didn’t even care about holding an event.
It's interesting, but I remember the early 2000s when Mac fans complained that Apple didn't do enough incremental updates, compared to, say, Dell.

The problem right now is less incremental updates and more the confusing nature of the lineup with the incremental updates slotted in at odd places rather than replacing something at the same pricepoint. Like the new iPad would have been killer at the 9th gen's pricepoint, or close to it, and then a dropped price 9th gen could have been an amazing deal for educational use, but that didn't happen. I do think at least some of this is driven by supply chain issues right now, so maybe the product lines will get cleaner towards the end of next year when chip shortages and supply chain issues in general are expected to ease

Probably that new 4 pin connector was misunderstanding. It was probably meant about iPad 10, but got lost in translation/rumors so to say, especially given that it came out with design that resembles iPad Pro.

Apple senior execs don’t like WFH given that they’re always trying to get people back in the office. Maybe they’re one of the 5 people you’re complaining about.

Just pointing out the correlation between the period of WFH and a series of lackluster products. Causation, who knows? But correlation, absolutely.

Oh yeah that’s interesting the Apple logo on the back of the 10th Gen iPad is still in portrait orientation.

Apple can't win. While we would all love big updates every 18 months that isn't realistic anymore. So Apple's choices are to do minor updates in-between or do no updates in-between larger revisions. Either way people complain. Personally I'd rather have the small improvements so that when I do buy I get the latest (even if it is just a small improvement over the previous) or I get the buy the previous version at a discount.
The issues here for me aren't minor upgrades, but the price hikes. To give minor updates is one thing, but to do so while actively raising prices to what feel like exhorbinant for a base-level iPad, people are going to complain much more than normal and I think Apple deserves it.

The only 2 features I'm interested in are the mini-LED and the Promotion.
So a 2021 would be a better choice, if I can find an offer.

What a sloppy release...
At least I would have explained that the new camera orientation caused the device to be only apple pencil 1 compatible.
Would have made a bitter pill easier to swallow.

I've been wanting to replace my iPad Air 2 (2014) the past 2 or 3 years and each time, they've just missed the mark on some things I wanted to be included. Almost pulled the trigger on the new iPad Air. I can wait just a little while longer, though every new iPad OS makes it more sluggish and the battery is straining to hold a charge now.
Loved the iPad Air 2. But started looking for something new in 2018. Was excited about the iPad Air 3 in March 2019, but decided against it due to the original Apple Pencil. Almost pulled the trigger on Black Friday 2019, but waited for the same reason. Ended up getting the iPad Pro 12.9 in march 2020. Been pretty happy with it. . . but I think the iPad Air 4 would have been more than sufficient in Sept 2020. But I was impatient. :)

Apple's decision to bring a landscape ‌FaceTime‌ camera to the entry-level ‌iPad‌ in the same update cycle as the ‌iPad Pro‌, while not bringing it to the ‌iPad Pro‌, is sure to be —intriguing— infuriating for some customers.

You had a typo there, I fixed it.

See you in ~18 months for the real iPad Pro upgrade
Nothing is truly a Pro upgrade. By that time the Air or basic iPad could have something that even the most expensive Pro doesn’t.

It’s weird but I guess the base model is the most selling iPad. So Apple gotta give a bone one way or another.

I'm sure all the rumors were true to a certain extent, as Apple have various prototypes, and some probably for future models as well.

This latest slew of releases showed that Apple is about cost cutting (penny pinching if you will), mainly to keep US prices in its previous price brackets. From iPhone 14 keeping the old A15, 14 Pro keeping 128GB base storage, the M2 iPad Pros retaining the same old design since the A12Z iPad Pro, it's all to minimize cost. Apple has strict margin requirements for all their products.

This is so apparent on the iPad 10. It was probably supposed to replace the iPad 9, complete with transitioning the whole lineup to USB-C and Apple Pencil 2, but Apple cannot fathom getting less margin, so they increase the price and cut off feature (Apple Pencil 1 support instead of 2). To put the illusion that the price increase is "okay," they keep the old iPad 9 model. Apple's decision seems to be purely on hitting price points, which is contrary to marketing as it shows a really disjointed lineup, merely because of needing to maintain their margins.

This is definitely one of the worse product year for Apple imo, except maybe the Apple Watches.
