I'm wondering if the speakers at the M2 Air are better compared to the MBP 13" (M1/M2)?
I watched a view reviews but i did not catch that information.

judging from the case design being better, I'm pretty sure that is the case. They compared the computer speakers of an m1 air and the new air, and it's clearly better on the m2.

Her reactions often seem over the top, but that might just be her personality.
More likely, it’s YouTube. Over the top folks get a lot of comments from people that don’t like their over the top-ness, but, as far as YouTube is concerned, that’s engagement and drives their video to be seen by more folks that may also not like it and comment on it, and over and over and over.

The second I see anything reviewed by so called "tech expert" iJustine I switch off, I mean where was she when Apple first started gathering momentum in the iMac G3 days?

To echo my previous thoughts the real long standing Apple users should get these review units, we pay enough to buy them and care about using them, plus it'd be real world case studies not one of the "tech experts for hire"
Let’s see, iMac G3 released in 1998, iJustine born in 84 so probably in 8th or 9th grade? Not likely posting YouTube Videos as YouTube wasn’t a thing until 2005, I believe.

“the real long standing Apple users should get these review units”
I can see it now. “STILL no floppy, STILL no SCSI and no way to easily connect my ImageWriter, 0 out of 100! Try again next time Apple!” :)

Never dispoints to see the sexism in here by users having to constantly put down ijustine just because she general enjoys tech, even though she gave you a comparison most of you wanted. (14 inch to air.)

personally, having watched a bunch of the videos, I’m glad I’m waiting for there 14 pro m2. And no way I’d get midnight. Silver or starlight it is.
This has nothing to do with her gender. Its her personality.

Literally what are you on about?
The M1 Air, the machine you were just talking about, the machine that apparently let’s pros use a consumer level machine without issue is… *checks notes* still being sold by Apple at the exact same price it was in 2020.
Hop on over to Bestbuy or Amazon and you can find it for even cheaper.
The M1 Mac Mini it’s even cheaper than that and still being sold by Apple.
The new Air isn’t a backtrack on anything.
You pay an extra $200 and you get a better computer with a better design, camera, display, processor, battery… The only thing that’s objectively worse is the SSD and even then most people won’t notice and the ones that will are going to get the bigger storage anyway so it won’t be relevant in the end at all.

Design is very subjective, and many fans of MBA prefer the tapered design on M1 MBA. The battery is the same on paper, but as Dave2D tested, it is a bit worse than M1 MBA. The M2 MBA also gets significantly hotter than the previous model, so this might not be as nice of a lap laptop as the previous model. So yeah, you get to pay $200 more for questionable design, a bit worse battery, and significantly worse SSD. Yes, you get a slighly brighter screen, but with an ugly notch - call it even casue I am not sure how often you need or use your screens at max brightnes. While improved, a camera is a moot point due to the upcoming Continuity Camera feature.
Also, to get about the same multitasking performance as M1, you need to spend not $200 more, but $400 more to get the higher capacity storage to get the same SSD performance.
If it suits you, that is great. I purchased one myself to see how it will perform in my workflow and make my own decision, but it does not change the fact that this new M2 MBA is not as good value and performance as the previous base model.

Apple’s LCD displays push the limits of the technology and the Midnight color has grown on me so I’m warming up to the idea of a 512GB MacBook Air over the 14” MacBook Pro.

It also helped that I visited a retail store and there was a LG OLED on the wall behind the Mini LED display, which made it surprisingly lackluster in comparison under bright store lighting.

As a writer primarily I’m trying to figure out which is the better of the two for my needs today, and while they’re similar the Air may check more boxes if I was to start taking it out with me rather than leaving it on my desk all the time.

Dave2D's is a well balanced and honest initial review, I thought.

In the old days ( well not that long ago ) Dave2D would have his reviews later because he brought it himself. Now they are releasing these video at the same time ( the embargo ) along with previous note on Air suggest they are bound by the same PR requirement.

I honestly think the MBA is going to replace the 13" MBP as the second best selling Mac now that the 14" MBP exists and the Air isn't crippled by Intel chips.
Well, the M1 MBA was Apple’s best selling Mac, so yea.

It gets more complicated now that there is the M2 and and the older M1 Air (SE?).
And there may be less interest in the 13” MBP over time, too.

I love how those reviews go "under sustained load of playing 11 4K streams while also playing Civilisation VI at max settings the Macbook Air throttled somewhat, which proves it is not actually a machine for super demanding professionals and gamers as it was never advertised."

Sticking with my M1. Maybe the tapered design is old-fashioned, but then so am I. One of those reviews places the M1 Air on top of the M2 and M1 looks more modern. (Until you open it, obviously.)

P3 color gamut with one billion colors, which looks delightfully accurate and phenomenally vibrant on modern Apple devices, paired with the best contrast ratio possible on a conventionally-backlit LCD display.

And still at 60hz

Nothing about this particular MBA screen is earth shattering.

Just seemed odd to bring it up as a major “pro”

It looks improved over the previous generation display in direct comparisons. I’m also quite familiar with how good Apple LCD’s can be.

It won’t be as good as a Mini LED display or OLED, but this seems to be one of the best aspects of the Air.

I think too many people here and on YouTube are trying to fit the M2 Air inside the MBP mentality and that is the real problem. Apple didn't make the Air for sustained MBP type usage. What we are seeing now happened when the M1 MBA was released. A lot of people looking for reasons to hate on the M2 because they had false expectations.

Except for the absurd price, slower SSD, ugly huge notch, no FaceID, and several other major issues that have been mentioned, it's pretty good. I'm sure many people will be satisfied with it.
Face ID components themselves are double the thickness of the entire MBP lid so unless you want the MacBook's lid to be as thick as the iPad Pro you might as well stop barking up that tree.

The issue is that the M2 chip is capable of insane performance including editing 8K video, but not sustained workflows due to the lack of an active cooling system.

It’s misleadingly powerful, unlike the Intel Air’s that could barely run Safari.

My dream computer used to be a MacBook Air with Pro performance, which is essentially what Apple silicon is almost making a reality.
