I had the 2018 mini and loved it... I had a terrible monitor that really hurt the experience but that's a different story. I didn't realize how bad it was till I got my 24" iMac. Now the iMac has been sold due to downsizing so waiting on the M2 Air. Typing this from my gaming PC 😛
I don’t mind the monitor I have— I actually use it with the MBP and the Mini, but it is *not* retina. (34” Dell ultra wide). I’ve been spending too much time on these forums and now I’m craving something 218ppi for my primary display at home 😂

I had a 32" 1080P Samsung curved... It was sort of okay for gaming but text was terrible

I would doubt it. I have my M1PRO hooked to a external 4k and the fan doesn't come on unless i push the machine pretty hard -- doesn't seem to be any significant disadvantage with external display. Fanless models should act the same way....

I believe this was a problem with the older intel models because they would put the dgpu into a higher power state.
Thanks! I hope you're right!

You're the sexist one. You're the only one who cares what's between her legs. The rest of us don't like mindless shills regardless of their sex.
No you! You scream as you get another HR violation. Calling her a mindless shill is also just, you know, silly. She’s way more accomplished in her field then you were probably anyone else is in on this board, which probably just makes you even more angry for no reason.

plenty of other reviewers to watch if you don’t like how she does things.

So you like slowed sustained Performance under load?

It cuts menubar in half, obstruct items that otherwise visible, reduce menubar usable space and make menubar look bigger when displaying Higher than default scaling.

Me I much prefer a complete menubar without notch rather than that minuscule amount of “extra real estate”.

iPad having no notch is the major reason I use iPhone less and less, and being able to see the whole screen unobstructed is a bless.
Yes, i would absolutely choose a slight dip in sustained performance as long as there is no fan noise. It looks like you really have to hammer the Air to get it to throttle and even then the overall result is still faster than the M1. That is hardly something to cry over.

You are dismissing the “minuscule” amount of extra screen space provided by the notch because you really need to see that small gray patch of menubar covered by the notch? That doesn’t really make sense.

Only thing I want to see is a size comparison. How much smaller is it compared to a 14” MBP?

One Apple reviewer and fanboy(s) were honest and critical enough to finally come out and break this trend

Max Tech

Yup. They general opinion videos are mostly made up, but at least they go and do various tests on the various models. Most today's reviewers are not even doing this, they just go and regurgitate Apple's marketing points, so we get no additional information. I give credit to Maxtech for spending their time in testing the various models that exposes the issues with these models.

Yes sir. It's better to wait for the real reviews from the regular consumer. All these videos look like they memorized a script.
When you are given a free review unit from Apple (or any other companies), you also receive a specific instructions on which marketing points you would need to hit. That's why if you watch many youtubers, they ended up just talking about the same things. Those who tried to point out anything negatives would probably cover it with some excuses for Apple so they don't get banned. Eg D2D. Despite him talking about the slower SSD, he still made up excuses for Apple just like many apologists here by saying "well, users buying this machine won't notice/or won't need the performance." Which is BS as other tests have shown significant slowdowns just from regular multi-tasking.

I consider real tech reviewers to be anandtech. They tend to go down into the details of the SoC, real actual tech reviews. But their reviews are few and far in between (made sense since it takes time to really review a device).

I think you're right. It's meant to be the ultra portable laptop that happens to be relatively cheap if you get the base model. You'd probably be better served with the base model 14" MacBook Pro.
As soon as I read this, I gasped at the thought of what they are planning to do to malign the next base 14” MacBook Pro to get people to splurge for the upgraded models.
But at least we know the reviewers are going to be cool with it.

Dave2D says 20% dip in performance when in full throttle so I’m not sure. But if you value fan noise (which isn’t really audible for me for normal use unless in full spin) over performance that’s fine.

And extra screen space you say? The notch on the iPhone is the main reason I use iPad Pro most of the time for almost everything simply because there’s no notch. If I have to use notched MacBook, I’ll use those programs to create fake bezel so I can see a complete menubar again. You think it doesn’t make sense. I think it makes perfect sense to enjoy a unified screen without any cut in.

Apple already did, by equipping the same bottlenecked single NAND configuration for the M2 13" Macbook Pro. If you look at Apple's own marketing, the Pro model seems to be targeted to those who definitely would be affected by the reduced SSD bandwidth. It's just to push you to buy the 14" Macbook Pro instead.

I think the 14" Macbook Pro is safe for now as the base config already have 512GB storage. We just need to pay attention when Apple discontinue the 13" Macbook Pro, meaning the base 14" Macbook Pro would be prime target for intentional neutering.

If not for the notch, the slower “stop and smell the flowers” SSD, and headache-inducing temporal dithering, it would have been perfect.
If I end up buying a Mac mini or studio, is there a way to emulate the notch in software on a regular monitor?

There's two notch simulator apps in the Mac App Store. Notchmeister has the cool effects, but either of them gives you the notch you so desire.

They’re going to make it where it doesn’t have Wi-Fi 9.5j. Don’t worry don’t do something to get everyone excited in the forums

Yeah, who wants professional reviews when you can get amateur ones.
I think it’s funny that some people are commenting the reviews are just paid Apple shills while others are saying it’s good the reviewers pointing out possible issues.

If these guys are getting paid by Apple then Tim Cook needs to ask for his money back. I didn’t watch all of them but the ones I did are the worst paid shills ever 😂😂
