M2 Air is a good laptop. But don’t think one should buy the 256GB model.
If the quality of the build so far is any indication of its longevity, I would say definitely get one with more than 256GB SSD, even if it means waiting a month or two to buy. By then, any minor hardware revisions should have been made, if they need to be, and you'll be getting the best unit you could possible have, which will surely last you 10 years if you want it to.

Sometimes it amuses me when people complain about a "slow" SSD when as a kid I had to insert multiple 3.5" discs to install things or play a game. How many were there for the one version of Windows. And then I would nearly cry when i would show "Corrupted" on disc 7 of 8

And personally I equally dislike Rene Ritchie. WOW, he's a MALE! Am I a sexist?
Yes, someone else who sees through his bull.

He is probably a bigger shill than Justine, during the whole privacy stuff with iMessages he took to twitter to argue with anyone who said it was bad and ignored actual facts from people. It was embarrassing and cringe, I honestly can't watch anything from someone with so little self respect.

At least justine gives us some decent shots of the product if you just ignore her.

Marques brownlee is also hardly impartial, he knows where his bread is buttered and keeps on Apples good side while he will slate everyone else.

And MrWhostheboss is a massive shill for chinese brands so I avoid him as well, plus he does the worst Queen accent impersonation.

Spot on. They are regurgitating a script apple gave them of talking points. Any deviation from that script will ban them from future early release reviews.
Like, we know for a fact that this isn't the case. They get a briefing from apple. Cover's the stuff Apple wants to highlight. A lot of the lazier tech tubers generally do regurgitate that stuff, but even the people in this thread (who again, despite how much they scream about not being sexist are giving off extreme joe rogan/Musk fans completely tone deaf to how bad it is in this country for woman this summer in general. And by that I mean, a lot of you can swear up and down you don't care what's between someones legs (which btw is a borderline transphobic statement) but are also the type of people who would claim a woman talked a lot in a meeting when they talked for fifteen minutes out of a 45 minute meeting dominated by men). Complaining about iJustine when the reality is she clearly didn't go on a script when she brings up editing 4K footage on the air in her lap and talks about how warm it gets. She showed off some nice size comparisons to computers some of us are comparing the airs too.

We then go over to Max Tech, who's whole bit (at least to me,) seems to be running silly bench marks (two 8K exports at the same time while running Chrome tabs off the battery) and going, "damn, it does get a little warm! Careful guys!" like that's an actual thing a lot of regular people buying the air do. I'll also add, most of those video's linked aren't actually reviews. Justine's is an unboxing and first look. And you all calling them shills are also failing to realize they have to return those machines. They don't get to just keep the early devices. If they want to actually own them, they're getting them today or beyond.

that all being said, of course some reviewers ring true to some people over others. But when you come into here and say things like (she may have seven million subs but they're all idiots) or "See?! she didn't push back on this one line with Tim Cook exaggerating about how good this insane camera feature (that again, all the actual tech pro's around camera's that I know of are seriously impressed with said feature) so she's an idiot Apple cult sheep!" No matter how you claim it's not a bias, anyone who has any education on the matter or training on the matter isn't going to pick up on it. Weakly stating you'd also attack RR too doesn't really help your claims either. Bottom line, a bunch of you should work on raising your vibrational frequency and stick to maybe not being so bloody negative. These machines really do seem awesome, for the majority of regular folks looking for a machine. Are they right for most pro's? Of course not. But I don't see why we're getting angry about that, when Apple for the first time in almost ten years seems to be in a really, really good spot with their overall computer line up. (Of course, I'd like it to be easier to play AAA games on Apple silicon machines, I'm sad even if I get a 14 inch pro I don't see an easy way of playing age of empires 4.) And I'll say this, it would be nice to have these run two displays. It really would. But I don't see a world in which somebody who needs to run two screens doesn't also need 16 gigs of ram, and at least a 512 hard drive... which then brings you right up to an on sale 14 inch pro, at which point just get that.
Like personally, I just think a lot of you want to be mad for mad sake, and when I originally came in here yesterday it was because I was stoked to see new tech. It's fun! cool machines! even though I knew it probably wasn't right for me. then I saw all the negative garbage, and decided to address it.

I much prefer Touch ID on iPad and iPhone, and I love it on Mac.

Any by the way, those "facial recognition" devices you mentioned don't use the LIDAR tech Apple uses for Face ID: they just rely on a webcam, which can — although it takes some work — be fooled. So no thanks.

I especially love it on my iPhone because one of my favorite things to do is browse Reddit (with Reddplanet of course because it's fantastic) in bed, under the covers, lights out, ready to sleep. With Face ID I can no longer do that without un-burying my head ad looking straight at the camera. I was hoping iOS 16's new landscape Face ID feature would fix that but nope.
You can fix / reduce the "look directly at the phone" issue with face id by adjusting face id settings.

Sure, I think some of the reviews are a little biased obviously.
But to pretend like all of these people who all got review units who all did reviews before it released were 100% positive is false and ridiculous.
I watched and read several.
Several of them mentioned how easy the midnight version gets fingerprints.
Several of them mentioned their disappointment with the whole SSD thing.
Several of them mentioned how it’s hard to recommend the M2 over the M1 or the high-end over the 14 MacBook Pro.
And let’s not even get into how the people who got pre-review unit still tore apart the 13 inch MacBook Pro for being a ridiculous product.
All of the videos I watched and reviews I read seemed extremely fair.
It’s a fantastic computer. not a perfect computer, but a fantastic computer.

these are all kinda safe opinions to have though. no one is banging the drum to skip this one or really scold apple for the base model snafu

I would say that that depends on one's work flow and expectation. There is nothing wrong with the 256 outside of it being slightly slower than the predecessor which in reality use simply means a few milliseconds slower in normal Air usage. The forums and some online are trying to make the 256 non-issue more than it really is.

Which is BS as other tests have shown significant slowdowns just from regular multi-tasking.
Seeing as how the vast majority of folks that own Macs own non-M1 Macs, even slowed down, they’re still going to have better performance than the Mac they currently have. What those folks will notice is an impressively better performing system. Only folks coming from an M1 would notice poorer performance, really.

ALL THE REVIEWERS ARE SHILLS AND I’M TELLING YOU THIS ON AN ENTHUSIAST WEBSITE!!!

How can you make a blanket generalization like this? Plenty of well balanced and well informed reviews exist that focus on both the positive and negative aspects of a given product.

Also, please chill with the caps.

Curious to know why any hardware revisions might be made at all? Does this happen sometimes?

I am really disappointed with their decision to let go of the tapered design from the previous MacBook Air. I absolutely hate typing on MacBook Pro (those sharp edges on the front cut into my hands). The 2018-2021 MacBook Air design in my opinion is still best-in-class. This looks like a thin box. I am sure that changing the shape improved the speakers and heat management, but I will sorely miss the tapered design.

Kinda safe opinions for a kinda safe computer.
Not entirely sure what people want.
Outside of the one configuration that has a slower SSD, there’s really not anything to get worked up about.
Did people really expect the reviews to come out and say “the screen sucks, the camera sucks, speakers suck, The new design sucks, The processor sucks?”
This isn’t a 12 inch MacBook or touchbar type product where there’s a huge space for different type of opinions.
Apple took their most basic, satisfactory notebook and gave it a facelift and specbump.
If you liked the M1 MBA (and most people did) you’ll like the M2 MBA

What is the reasoning for putting a worse ssd in that the previous model?
We’ll probably never know, but more than likely it’s because there’s a chip shortage.
If Apple sells a million 256gb models, it’s a lot easier to get one M 256 GB chips than it is to get two M 128 GB chips.
Maybe there wasn’t enough 128 GB chips to reach the July ship date.
Maybe some people are right and it costs apple slightly less to use one 256 instead of two 128 gb chips.

Thats Apple latest laptop form factor, the rounded edges with lid closed make it more comfortable to carry. What height of a desk likely affects the edges being felt with keyboard. The larger thickness helps as you said with both speakers/heat as well as allow batteries to fit to all edges. I also like the feet sticking out a lot more to maintain some airflow underneath laptop on a hard surface. :)
