We are using MacMinis at our university. It was already tricky to point the students to the power button before… and now it is getting impossible.
That provides a dismal assessment of the capabilities of the students at your university. Being able to handle a power switch should be a prerequisite to allow university students to use a computer or access a network.

I always turn my Mini off at night, and sleep is a pain in the butt since every time I put it into sleep mode the computer comes back on immediately. Maybe that's been fixed, but if my mouse moves a drop sleep is inactivated.
There had to be something annoying, guess this is it.
I'll try getting used to putting it to skeep instead, as long as it actually does go to sleep

This actually happens to me all the time, my keyboard and mouse are on a self-made tray, pushing that tray under the desk makes the mouse move for a fraction of a second. A simple fix would be to detect a period of activity of more than a second before coming out of sleep. That's the kind of easy fix that should have been implemented decades ago.

I power off my Mac Mini every night but I'm not too bothered by the power button placement in the new Mini because the base is taller than before, and so it may not even need tipping up to reach.

Yeah, it drives me nuts.

I turn my 2018 Mini off each night, and back on the next morning.
I also will shut it off if I'm going to be away for a few hours.

Guess I'll just have to get used to reaching around and "lifting up".

Another thought:
I may just set the option to "restart automatically after a power failure", and just cut the power on my power strip (which I do after I turn off the Mini anyway, I don't want anything connected at night). The OS is "protected" from damage now, and I usually manually close all apps before powering down anyway...
You wear out the watch battery that keeps the real time clock going if you kill the mains power after a shutdown.

Someone is going to make a “cradle” of sorts for easy eh..cradeling, propping up on its side or build a “stool” pedestal thingy so it will be easy to reach it.

Someone is DEFINITELY going to solder and make an external button.

Oh…..my…..gawd, Apple is going to release a power button dongle.

Given how fast my Mac Studio boots up, I’ve developed the habit of turning it off when not in use (being mindful of reducing electricity use). So I usually end up using the physical power button on it once or twice a day.

I’m wondering what the gap is between the button and the actual base of the Mini. If it were high enough to slip a finger tip in to press the button I might not mind. Otherwise, the placement would be annoying.

How about a truncated plastic cone as a base? With a light around the base, it acts a light pipe. And an arrow pointing to the power button so you can find the damn thing. The top circle is just the same as the base, allows lots of cooling air and access to the power button.

I wish they made it graphite like my 2018 Mini, looks much better than silver, IMO.
However, this is a screaming deal and they should fly off the shelves. I don't even need to configure it, the base model is perfect.
Only flaw, not exactly a looker and the power button on the bottom?
I guess I will also need a USB-A to USB-C adapter unless there is a wired Mac keyboard out there that has a USB-C plug. Mouse as well.

A simple 3d printed seesaw , no need to lift to press button.

I think this is fine and cleans up the look. I’m still amazed how the NeXT computers had power buttons on the keyboard that controlled the PC, speakers and monitor. Amazing they decided to stop doing that.

For what it’s worth, every laptop should have a power button that doesn’t require opening the lid.

I never restart my m2 Pro Mini unless there's a problem, and there haven't been very many problems. But on those rare occasions when I have to re-boot the Mini into Recovery Mode eight times in one day, the existing power button is already pretty darned awkward.

I shut mine down for many reasons all the time. This is the most idiotic thing I can possibly think of someone designing. Let alone, it makes it past all reviews and actually engineered onto an actual product.

Not kidding when I say that yes, this pretty much does make it a game changer since I turn mine off everyday. And yes it is that big of a stupid deal that it makes it so that this mini won't be very usable for my needs.

Apple, what is going on over there??

There is no need to turn off a machine like the Mac mini every day. The amount of power it uses to boot back up likely greatly overshadows the amount of power it consumes idling all night.

Sure but people have their ways and who are any of us to say “that’s wrong” ? I just see this as a slight lack of imagination on Apple’s part that an entrepid Etsy entrepreneur can 3D print and fix. All you need is a couple magnets really.

I don’t think anyone complained so much about Apple TV not having a power button at all. And yes, they have the same idle power consumption 🥸

I’m sure we can all agree to disagree on whether or not you like the mouse and mini, but I think we can all agree this new M4-powered variant is only ever going to be second best next to this beast.

Looks like it’s already upside down so the power button is easily accessible. Get with the game Apple!
