My 2023 M2 Max was struggling already and the heat was enough to warm my whole house at night.

Just purchased Baldur's Gate 3...!

That seems like a very strange complaint when any desktop Intel/AMD process combined with any AMD/NVIDIA GPU will heat up the whole house even more. This is primarily why I game on my Mac Studio, because the 13900k and 4090 setup just outputs too much heat.

My 3900X & 2070 cause a noticeable heat differential in my bedroom, with nothing but three Firefox tabs (one streaming video) & the weather app open...!

Well, my wife doesnt edit video. Neither does my mom. Nor my dad, or my cousins, nieces, nephews or most of my friends. In fact I’m the only one in my social circle who uses Final Cut Pro or even iMovie.

I have a family member in the UK who edits 2 minute projects for his business and sometimes video clips for his flying club (he’s a private pilot). But he’s happy with an M1 Air for these and wouldn’t really benefit from more powerful hardware for these projects.

Sure. Video editing is more mainstream than ever but I still regard it as fairly niche.
I hope you realize how poor this logic is. This is like saying "no one in my family watches Netflix, therefore Netflix is for specialists". It is not worth addressing seriously.
 
It really is.

Contrast improves significantly, which improves color and picture quality; and makes images “pop” or gives it a more 3D effect.

Viewing angle accuracy improves, so when looking at a display at an angle, the image doesn’t wash out.

No blooming, which is annoying on mini LED because it has inaccurate shadow detail and/or has to pull back highlights to preserve shadow detail; the image is inaccurate to the original image source in challenging scenes; or the blooming distracts like on subtitles or starfields.

The previous iPad Pros and current MacBook Pros with mini LED are lying about ProMotion 120Hz. The pixel response is too slow, like 5-10x too slow, to show 120 frames per second. OLED fixes that because it has a pixel response of less than 3ms so you’re actually seeing 120 frames per second.

The main worry with OLED is it wouldn’t get bright enough to match, tandem OLED surprisingly does; and that OLED would burn in, which tandem OLED in theory won’t.
It really isn't. I tried a OLED display and had to return it for a MiniLED TV after I experienced how poor the highlights were in HDR content (can be objectively measured). I'm convinced at this point that the only people who defend OLED are people who have never actually experienced proper HDR before. OLED is that terrible when it comes to HDR content.

Contrast is a function of brightness, which OLED lacks. Meanwhile MiniLED achieves nearly perfect blacks while getting 3-4x as bright. It is also worth noting that companies that sell products with OLED displays will often lie about the brightness capabilities to cover up how dim OLED still is (even the "new" variants), by quoting brightness figures that in reality that only be sustained on 1-2% window for a few seconds. Also, OLED has nothing to do with viewing angles (this is more related to whatever coating the display happens to use), and blooming is irrelevant on MiniLED displays with high zone counts.

High zone count MiniLED especially obsoletes it. OLED is a dying technology on the way out.

That's anecdotal evidence. It'd be better to compare the M2 iPad Pro with the M4 iPad Pro (13 inches each).

I wouldn't mind it being sliiightly thinner than the current one. I hope whatever they did in the Ipad Pro can make its way towards the MBP.

The current design just looks a lot better when it's thinner - I mean look at how gorgeous the MBA is whereas MBP does look a little bulky.

Yeah, it's nice how thin the Air is, but I don't mind the Pro's thickness at all. It's a very robust device.

1. It's a comparison that always holds all else equal, because the poor brightness is one of OLED is one of the fundamental flaws of it.

2. Tandem OLED is a bandaid fix that attempts to mask some of the weaknesses of OLED by stacking two displays on top of each other. It is a gimmick that will double the chances of issues, will be expensive to repair, and it speaks volumes to some of the problems with OLED as a technology that such a strange workaround is even necessary. And no, black levels are not better in any appreciable way. Black levels on MiniLED are virtually perfect, so the difference at that level is irrelevant.

3. If MiniLED FALD technology can fit in a thin modern Apple tablet then any differences at that point are splitting hairs and irrelevant. The same thing applies to power consumption (assuming monitors and TVs). That said, you are indirectly highlighting one of the only actual strengths of OLED, which is that it is good for devices with very small batteries (phones, watches, etc). OLED is great for phones and other cheap devices due to that reason, but doesn't belong in anything else really.

It's also weird to give the "expensive to repair" argument as though mini-LED is cheap to repair. We're talking 10,000 small LEDs behind the LCD panel. If that's not expensive, I don't know what is.

See above. The "workaround" of having a backlight behind LCD is arguably even more of a crutch.

IME with the 2021 14-inch MBP, black levels on mini-LED aren't really a problem. But others have had different experiences, and notably, Jason Snell, who had the mini-LED iPad Pro and now the tandem OLED iPad Pro points out that it helps with text rendering as well; the better black levels effectively increase the text's sharpness.

But it isn't, as evidenced by Apple moving from mini-LED to OLED. It increases the light count from thousands to millions.

I am so happy I don’t need an MBP any more. My use case is perfect for an MBA.
Mind letting us know what's your typical usage are like? I'm thinking of getting one but not sure if it's going to be powerful enough (I'm a programmer, so mostly to run an IDE and a web browser)
 
Because he’s used to get a Pro that would be better than any other Mac for 5 years at least. There’s no reason to spend double for a Mac that will get surpassed next year by the regular Mac.

OK, but that hasn't been a thing in a long time. You'd probably have to go back to the 90s, perhaps 80s.

Like, even if you take the Power Mac G5, the iMac G5 arrived just two years later, and even if you take the highest-end, dual-CPU G5 model, the MacBook Pro probably outperformed it just three years later.

Apple needs a new CEO that can actually innovate. They could at least have added a webcam as good as the rear cam on an iPhone
 
But why? If there are no feature updates, there's hardly any real world difference.
It looks as if they’ve found their new marketing gimmick here now that people have shown they keep their phones longer. Every year, bring out a new chip design and make it something people can remember. “You only have an M2? The M4’s are out”

I feel this just says more about what a huge generational leap the M1 chip was, rather than any shortcoming in the M4 chips. I am sure an M4 MBA will be amazing, but the reality is that the M1 already more than suffices for my needs (8gb ram and all), through no fault of Apple's.

Agreed. I needed to replace my laptop so I bought the m3, which was current at the time. I did this because security updates for my 2015 are ending this year. I did want something smaller which was probably my main driver but if it weren’t for the security updates I would’ve waited. If those dates weren’t an issue, I might have went with an M2.

But also, M1 to M4 isn’t that small.

The Air’s Ice Lake to M1 was up 95% in single-core and 169% in multi-core. That’s… indeed a rare event.

But M1 to M4, judging from the iPad Pro, will be up 57% / 60%. That’s nothing to sneeze at.

Or alternatively for another smaller, more nimble and innovative company to appear. One that actually rethinks what post-smartpone era should look like rather than just making an even bigger and faster smartphone.

The counterpoint to this is that people don't exactly hate smartphones. You can make them smaller or larger, you can try to offload certain capabilities to other wearables and accessories, but the concept of a smartphone as your digital hub doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon.

Versailles has a huge hall of mirrors. May I recommend a visit? :D I have little money and I’m so unattractive I live in a house with no reflective surfaces. I don’t mind spending money, I have a thing about wasting it.
