M6 iMac Coming This Year in New Colors

I'm curious as to how iMacs are actually selling these days. It seems like most people are opting for laptops, not desktops. The distinguishing feature of desktops used to be a lot more computing power than what you could get in a laptop, but that distinction has been largely eliminated (outside of the Studio).

I'll never buy 24" iMac ever, no matter what specs or price. I'll buy a 27" or 32" in a heartbeat.

Yes, and…only if it has target display mode. Without that, I won't buy another iMac.

Still have my 2015 27" iMac going with OpenCore Legacy Patcher, but it's frustrating I can't use it as a display without going through this somewhat tricky hardware conversion.

Apple should put the Apple logo back on the front of the iMacs. They seem like a knock-off brand computer with out it.

From my pov, it looks much better without a logo on the front. Just like any product.

The previous generation of iMac looked fantastic and had a great range of ports etc, making them ideal for professionals who didn't necessarily need the raw power of the Mac Pro/Mac Studio.

This current generation just looks bizarre and - whilst the M4 / M6 SOCs are superb - there'll be people who could really use the Pro versions.

The iMac’s back to being what the original iMac was meant to be, a colourful “home” all-in-one.

It’s not a Mac aimed at professional use - it’s to look fun in a family room / bedroom or to look nice and stylish at a reception desk in a hospitality / wellness / health orientated business.

I guess the amount of spa / hairdresser’s / beauty clinics that have one of these iMacs in the waiting room is … high.

People scoff at my usage of a 4k 65 inch OLED that is 6 to 8 feet away from me…

But it’s bloody fabulous and my eyes love the experience.

Who knows maybe everybody detracting from my preference here is simply young and hasn’t experienced aging eyes yet?

so, you have a 65 4k TV connected to your Mac?
where my Mac Studio is located, that setup wouldn't work so I'm "sugaring" with my Studio Display ...

re aging eyes, I just recently got some reading glasses that work actually great using my iPhone but not at all in front of the monitor. So I have just today adjusted the zoom in Safari (zoom in twice) and that is easier on my eyes, I don't want to change the standard "Default" as I use LR/PS and need that space, same for Word/Excel ... will see how this goes.

Above is also true for my Neo, using my reading glasses doesn't help a lot, but my Neo is next to the chair that I sit in when watching TV, a LG C1 65 4k OLED 😉. I could try Airdrop or whatever it's called but pretty sure that doesn't support 4k, and I'm also not going to run a cable from the Neo to the TV

New accent colours for Macs but at this point Apple should allow users to pick any color they want as accent color...

I imagine this would create manufacturing and inventory bottlenecks that would be difficult to overcome. You can keep 5 or so colors in stock of varying configs and have them ready for delivery.

If you walk into an Apple Store and say “I would like the performance red iMac please”. Well, that has to be ordered. It has to me made in China and that’s gonna push back how long you’re waiting on that machine.

I don’t think it’s an economically viable option.

One critical niggle … and I’m not sure if this is still true today, but when I got it the only way to enable 4K 120Hz over HDMI for macOS involved a firmware update that was only doable with a Windows computer with USB-C that supported display port Alt

Large monitors are not just nice for aging eyes. I bought a Philips BDM4065UC 4k 40" monitor in 2015. Ever since, I've been wondering why almost everybody settles for relatively small 27" or even 24" monitors, while so much more desktop space is available and affordable.

Sure, that monitor was a relatively cheap VA screen and not ideal for video, but fine for desktop work, browsing, graphic design, soho. Still using the next version, with a slight 3000R curve.

It's just plain weird that there are so little large monitors with decent specification. There are dozens of (ultra) wide screen, 60 Hz, sub-4K screens, while many Macs can easily address 5K+ and or much higher refresh rates. I’m just talking about accent colors, the colors on macOS… it’s software… When you pick a blue iMac, you get a special blue but you cannot select the special yellow that would get a yellow iMac and things like that…

But no word on Mac Mini or Air? Don't the Mini's and Air's usually get the love first?

But we're also getting a MacBook Pro design refresh late this year or early next year that's using M5 Pro/Max chips because apparently Apple is skipping building those in M6 versions and will go straight to the M7 Pro/Max next year so the most expensive new Pro will have year old chips.

Everything is so up in the air right now..
Hard to believe anything until we see it.

It’s a passing observation when I see iMacs in stores. The colours and design are fine albeit a little too desaturated on the front for my tastes, but the overall package looks incomplete to my eyes without the logo.

My issue with this missing detail could be due to using an iMac daily at home. My eyes are accustomed to that design element, so without the logo, the M-series iMacs look like a knock-off brand to me.

I don’t have the same issue with my M-series MBP not having MacBook Pro written below the monitor.

The products I want Apple to make bigger, the iMac and the Apple Studio display, they make smaller. And the products I want them to make smaller and or thinner, the iPhone and the MacBook Air, they keep the same for making bigger and heavier!

The illusive OLED display apple can't seem to wrap their head around. Maybe it eats into their profit margins too much and they can't find a cheap supplier that meets their standards. Regardless the iMac needs a larger display, why this is still a 24" is a big question, at least without a larger 32" alternative, or even 27" like it used to be for many years. I guess they're happy with the grams and gramps market.

Exactly. The screen is too small. I knew a lot of people with 27" iMacs. Some are still holding onto them, even because they are outdated. Many of those people went with a Mac mini and a non Apple display, meaning Apple lost potential revenue because they replaced their 27" iMacs with a Mac mini and non Apple display, since Apple is nuts with the pricing on those, pretty much what a whole 27" iMac use to cost.

I saved a ton of money by getting a Mac mini and a 35" ultrawide display. Cost me $1200 when I was paying $2500 for a comparably equipped 27" iMac. It went kicking and screaming but now I can't go back to the iMac. Having a larger display of my choice and ports where I can see them is too nice.
