After scanning through everything the only App I think is fairly priced and would have bought is iPhoto. (but I already have iLife 11)

Many of the programs are simply overpriced. Many of the free programs are "lite" or require you to pay one way or another. Of course people need to make money, I just have an issue with things being advertised as free when they are not.

Aperture may also be a good value at $79, but I just got Adobe Elements 9 for $40

Maybe there will be better Apps and prices in the future.

Apple is know for their expertise in keeping things simple. I see these App stores as getting to be overwhelming and out of control.
I don't know how they will do it, but I think at some point, they will have to scale back.

I disagree with everything you typed, right down to your conclusion. The app store prices are reasonable, if not downright cheap (in many cases). Aperture 3 is a far better program than Photoshop Elements 9, and the Mac App Store is going to be HUGELY successful and will continue to grow and flourish.

You must be related to Steve Ballmer, who predicted the iPhone would be an utter failure.

So how does this app updating work? Will they only show when running the MAS? Will they show when running the app? Will they be part of the standard software update check?

It won't let me buy

It won't let me buy ANYTHING!!!!! I just get this error message. When I click on the app store support, it brings me to the apple page. Please help!:confused::confused:
(yes I do have the iTunes money)

Thanks

the app store (and even software update) weren't recognizing my installed iWork '09.

the problem: i had taken the individual programs out of the iWork '09 folder and had them loose in my Applications folder.
after i put them all back into the iWork '09 folder, software update and the App Store recognized them as having been installed.

michael

I have mine in the iWrok '09 folder as installed by default and the App Store does not show them as installed.

Was ready to by Aperture for $199. This is awesome. Support? What is the issue? Apple supports the App with regular updates. You have these forums as well as Apple Support forums, plus tutorial downloads to answer any questions. Some people are amazingly talented at making the worst of anything good I guess. Saving $120 bucks on an App I was committed to buy. POSITIVE. You can still buy the physical product online or at the brick and mortar store if that's what floats your boat.

Back to the version of Remote Desktop that is $79 on the Mac App Store: is this the unlimited version? I see nothing in the description about a 10 computer limit.

Which brings me to a gripe about the way both of the app stores work: you can't search through the descriptions. I'm often looking for an iPhone app that does something in particular, and I want to look through the description for a keyword like "afp", or "webdav" or anything really. Makes it really hard to look through a bunch of apps for this info. I suppose you could search online for the web version of the App's info sheet, but that seems a bit roundabout when you're already looking at the info you want to search through.

So the AppStore will automagically downgrade my retail version of Aperture 3 to the "personal use only AppStore" version when it detects it...?

No, it will just show as installed to prevent you from accidentally downloading / purchasing it from the App Store

Prices for Apple products are less in the UK than in the US, that's a first for high-end Apple stuff. For example...

Aperture US store = $79.99
Aperture UK store = £44.99 = $69.61

People should be aware that these apps purchased from the MAS are for personal use only. If you intend to use them in a professional environment you will still need to buy the full retail versions.

I believe that's true for using Final Cut Pro as well, a fine-print clause that specifies that you won't use it for professional work to avoid having to attach the h.264 license fee to each copy.

I wonder how many FCP users read the EULA, or if the wording's been updated....

Anybody else notice that the apps installed via the App Store are owned by System rather than the user that installed the program. This helps insulate the app from being hooked into by malware so promotes security.

Also, I hope the button configuration of the App Store is the default in Mac OS X Lion. I think it looks better than iTunes and the default look in Snow Leopard.

1. No surprise you had to post something negative.

2. The AppStore will not do anything to software that you purchased outside the AppStore, so the answer to your question is "of course not".

3. No surprise your post is based on not actually reading the license properly. When you buy any software on the AppStore, you have three choices: You can install on ONE computer without any use restrictions, you can install on any number of computers that are used by ONE person only, without any other use restrictions, or you can install on any number of computers that you control, and anybody can use them, as long as it is for personal use only.

In other words, the license is much more generous than whatever license you had before.

MAS and Your Apps

Hi

Is there a way for the MAS to show all the apps that you have on your Mac that are in the store?

Cheers!

Not entirely true. While iLife apps show as being installed. Aperture and my iWork apps do not. Must be a bug.

No, it can't be a bug, must be your setup, my iWork and Aperture are recognized by the MAS and they were not purchased from the MAS.

Developer Update: seems it’s all about the bundle ID. We used the same one for the Mac App Store build that we use from our own direct download build. So the Mac App Store thinks the app is installed, even if it’s a trial downloaded from our website. In some ways, actually, this is good for the customer — it prevents accidental or mistaken unnecessary re-purchases! But, it means you have to drag to trash if you want to purchase from the MAS. (I think Apple should use the bundle ID in conjunction with Apple ID purchase history to decide if the button should say “Buy” or not. And maybe if the Bundle ID matches but no purchase in their history, there’s a “Are you sure you need this?” dialog for safety.)

So the App Store is checking nothing more than the open text in the plist to determine if an app is legit?

Seems to correlate with this:

Huge piracy bug arrives alongside the Mac App Store

Apple can take this two ways: one, treat this appstore like iTunes, letting us download the app/song/etc once.

Option 2: Let us download it as many times as i want through my own itunes account.

Come one Apple, don't screw us over.....again.

If it is option one then i shall be sticking to retail software.
Backing up music is one thing but backing up applications? Seriously?!
What if i did a wipe and install of os x
