With Apples history of not resting on their laurels, I could see a complete overhaul of the Mac Mini design (ala iMac "lamp" to iMac G5), or just an upgrade (ala iMac G5/intel to current aluminum design).

The idea of loosing this end of the consumer market wouldn't make sense - Would it?

Apple's history of not resting on their laurels? Where did you get that from?

Mac Pro - Same aged old specifications since 2006 (we are almost into 2008 for your information).
Macbook Pro - 5 year old design now?

Many people seem to be hooked on dedicated cards, but don't look to see if the performance is really any better. The current Mini, even with the 950 is a FAR better performer in anything graphics related than my G4 is with the ATI 9200.

Having said that, I don't want to miss the boat on an upgrade that seems as though it is just around the corner (meaning I find it likely that they will align the Mini with the Macbook once again, fairly soon)

My 2 decade old Ford Pinto is far better than the first car Henry Ford invented.

Apples and Oranges literally.

In its time the G4 Mini had a graphics solution that is far better than other budget computers in its price range. That is a more sensible comparison to make. By the way for $799 I can put together a machine that makes even the stock Mac Pro look bad for gaming.

My sister just bought a 1.83Ghz Mac mini (mid-2007). It's supposed to be here today.

She used to have an iBook G3/800 (32MB VRAM), so the Mac mini should be a major upgrade for her.

We'll now you can be assured an update will come tomorrow :p

That's the way it seems to work out. Buy today, new one tomorrow.

But, either way, she'll have a good machine.

I don't like the price point for what they are. But, I do think they are great little computers. I just wish they were priced cheaper.

My G4 Mini has served me well though for a long time. I'm now getting it ready to pass on to my daughter. So, it still has a long life ahead of it.

A G3 to an Intel will be a huge upgrade for her. But, I'm sure the G3 800 was no slouch either. The iMac G3/333 that my daughter currently uses has performed admirably and still does with all her educational titles and games. But, I'm going to get that one ready to pass on to the new baby on the way

I start them young. My current daughter was playing on the computer at one or two months old. I had simple reactive programs set up then that would do something on the screen when different keys were hit. And, they got gradually more complex from there.

She's now got about 20 different educational titles with about a dozen different modules each. And, she excelled up to about the 3rd or 4th level in some of the 1st grade programs by the time she was 3. She's now just turned 4, and is getting ready for some more advanced stuff, so she'll get the G4 to run the newer programs.

The more I think about it, the more I want a mini with a nice graphics card.
Damn... :p

Same here. I almost bought one back in PPC era, but as there wasn't optical audio output at that time, I postponed the purchase. Now that there is optical audio output, they took away the GPU so I had to postpone the purchase again. I'm beginning to wonder if they ever let me buy the thing :)

While I do agree that the Mac mini is in need of a much better GPU, I have to say that the G4 to Core 2 Duo update is nothing short of spectacular (at least with the HandBrake encoding speed).

Agreed. The PowerMac G5/Mac Pro and the PowerBook/MacBook Pro form factors have been around for some time now.

I guess I was specifically referring to :apple:s dramatic design overhauls of products that seemed to be performing well as they were, as opposed to the life-span of a particular design.

• iMac G4 to iMac G5
• iBook G4 to MacBook
• iPod Mini to Nano to Nano to Nano
• iPod Shuffle to shuffle
• Airport base station to new Airport BS
• old to new keyboards
• old to new cinema displays

I want the same thing, no question. My point was, the computer was upgraded when they went to intel, not only in processor speed, but ALSO in graphics 'card' performance. Did I say it was as good as other computers in its price range? no. But it does run OS X, and quite well, so for most of my work that is sufficient. Am I waiting right now, in the hopes that they will put a better card into it? YES, at least until my $100 'credit' from my iPhone is ready to expire.

Your comparison of the mini to another PC for $799 is also 'Apples to Oranges'. Most of us chose an Apple for the operating system. It (my G4 Mini) was my first Apple, and without it, I would never have purchased one. I can upgrade with the $600 mini, get similar performance to the iMac and save $600. (yes, I have FW external HD and DVD burners)

NO 'Black Friday Deal' for Mac Mini

This ONE DAY Apple "Turkey" sale barely makes up for the usa/can exchange rates. And why no discount on Mac Minis??? Are they EOL? ...kick start the rumour (again)!

There is no discount on the Mini because Apple has no plans to dump it, The people who post these rumors on here are lunatics and have no idea what they are talking about hence the name of this web site "Mac Rumors"

I have two Mini's and plan to buy two more at full price! they are a great machines and worth every dime! never let the Apple lunatics that prowl around this web site change your mind about buying any Apple or Windows product and fool you into believing they have inside information.

:D

Let me tell you why the Mini and :apple:TV will be discontinued.

1. There's only one of each on display at the Apple Store, come on, they have 10 iPhones on display, 10 iMacs, so, Apple doesn't care.
2. Apple sells only "upscale" to the "upscale". If you are trying to use some old PC monitor or only want a bare-bones :apple:TV (instead of a Mac Pro) to view your iTunes content, please buy from Dell...
3. Apple Fans are totally gone. Why cater to people that use Apple gear in all parts of their lifestle (see my sig) that have been using Apple since the Apple II?
4. Mac rumor site users seem to know, but don't. Listen to them.... they're being End-Of-Lifed even though you can still go buy one. And they're not-that-great. Come on, you can buy an entire Dell system for LESS!
5. Keeping them would make too much sense - and we don't want to make too much sense.
:p

Like I said lunatics! everyone here knows so much about what Apple plans to do next, for all I know half of you guys that post here might be teenagers living in your mom's basement.

The people who post these rumors on here are lunatics...

Whoa!
All Apple products have an "end of life." The G4 Cube went away suddenly,
the G3 iMac in different flavors disappeared, the G4 iMac was replaced, etc. The Mini will go away too. -Hopefully not before I get my Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz!
We're not lunatics, we're just getting nervous. I read a lot online about a Mac Nano replacing the current Mini, no big deal. We "lunatics" just want to get the fastest current Mini in time before the end of an era. I like the current size/shape/look/feel/color of the current Mac Mini. I'm not interested in something smaller/thinner/lighter. The Mini is a work of art.

Seconded.

I love my G4 Mini. But the new ones are a bit too expensive now for what you get so I bought an entry level iMac instead. Whilst the iMac is obviously a much better machine, I much prefer the design of the Mini. Like the G4 anglepoise iMac, and white iBook before it, it's an absolute design classic and triumph of miniaturisation. Even though its the cheapest Mac it screams 'premium'. To be honest I think my new iMac is a bit tacky looking in comparison...

All though the poll was not taken by very many folks looks like I was right the majority of posters here are teenagers.

Yep, they're at the right age to be indoctrinated with the religion of Apple! And then when they get to university and believe they know everything already and are full of ideals, they'll declare jihad on everything non-Apple... ahh it feels good to be this bitter and twisted hahaha....

...and angry too!

:apple: Apple Youth declaring Holy Wars? Neat! I thought we were talking about the inevitable end of the Mac Mini era?

I only read the last half of the last page of this thread and it all seemed to be about how old people were, with links to age polls etc. I figured people were bored of this topic!
