How the hell did they manage to get XP running on a 486 with 8MB of RAM ?

I think someone is very confused. Running XP on less than 1GB is slow, impossible on 8MB. I have an older Compaq Pentium 500Mhz with 160MB RAM that runs XP, but slowly. It sits in the back room to be played with for old times sake once or twice a year.

Im running Win XP (SP2) with 512 MB and AMD 1.3ghz Athlon right now, and I can assure you it's not slow.

Everything can get smaller. The first computer took up an entire first floor; look where we are now.

Okay, Mr. Technical. Yes, it *can* get smaller, it took 50-years to shrink it this far. And I expect that in the next 50, we'll be laughing at the notion of a computer that took up so much desk space. A 6" Square! How proposterous!

And when your grandkids ask you "What's a keyboard? You mean you talked to a computer with your fingers and hands? How odd! Your computer was death, so you did computer signing with your hands? By the way, what's a computer?"

I have no argument your experience. My 2.41 Ghz Athlon 64 with 1 GB RAM runs pretty good, but my Intel Core2 Duo laptop with 2 GB RAM is much faster in all operations. But it is significantly faster booting up since the processor does not have to spend all that time setting up so much Virtual Memory on the hard drive, because there is more than adequate REAL memory.

My MAIN point was that a 386 or 486 with 8MB RAM cannot run XP.

If that was in reply to my post, I know XP won't run on anything that old. That is why I (sarcastically -) asked the question after someone had posted he had replaced his parents 13 year old Compaq running XP with a Mac mini.

13 years ago, the average new PC was a 486 with 4 or 8 MB of RAM, the Pentium had only just been released and was very expensive for the small performance gain the early versions had over the 486. I think he was probably exaggerating the age of his parents old computer :)

No it isn't. Maybe slow for your experience, but where I work we have probably 5000 PCs mostly on SP2 with 512mb ram. Seems to run our apps (Lotus, office and web based Java apps) without any problems.

I am not challenging your experience, just relating my own. My Athlon 64 at 2.41Ghz and 1GB RAM connected to a cable modem with download speed of 9500 Mbps and upload speed of 2500 Mbps runs an ABC TV show full screen quite well. However, when running High Definition broadcasts, it stutters, and the video is not fluid. It shows a picture and then another like a slide show rather than a video. My Intel Core 2 Duo laptop with 2 GB RAM and 128 MB dedicated video RAM runs the High Def TV at full screen with no hesitation, and the video quality is great.

All I can say is that with more and more rumors about the upcoming APPLE TV refresh containing a DVD playing capabilities (blu-ray or hd-dvd as well) It really makes more sense to combine the Mac Mini and APPLE TV into not only a basic MAC to own but a Media Centre.

If that happens, I truly hopes that leaves an open spot for a "MAC" the mini tower we've been asking for years or hell... lets just bring the CUBE back but with better upgrade capabilities.

I was hoping the "MAC" would be the pro version of the iMac. Packed into the thin chassis of an updated cinema display. Though your idea would follow the current naming scheme quite well.

Just visited an Apple Store here in Toronto, the Mac Mini is no longer on display, you need to ask someone if you're interested in buying now.

That there my friends is the first sign... :(

I have a gut feeling that a new Mac consumer model will be announced at MacWorld San Francisco. People have been clammering for such a beast for some time now. I know, I know, most say it won't happen.

Interestingly enough, I just received an email inviting me to participate in an Apple survey...

...which essentially boiled down to "Hay! You bought a Mac Mini. What do you think of it?"

Naturally I said I was very satisfied with it - which I am/was.

***Looks at iPhone***

I think we are real close to getting something a lot smaller than the Mac Mini. Its probably only a matter of time before Apple creates a home media server that you hook your iPod/iPhone/Apple TV/Mac into. Right now you do that with any Mac - but storage requirements (and the need for at least two drives to make Time Machine work) are going to overwhelm the notebooks, iMac, and Mac Mini.

Possibly the Mac Mini's future is as a media server? Just stretch it into a cube and you can get a couple of nice big 1T drives in there;)

Please tell me this is a humorous post--I thought everyone knew that Scotland was the northern most part of Ireland

(my Irish friend would kill me for joking about this!)

Yes, you are correct. I was just injecting a little humor here. At first I was going to say "what part of Canada".
