I have a DVD burner in one of my Macs, one of my Windows computers and one of my laptops, but I never use them. Sometimes I burn CDs. So, if I were to buy a Mac Mini, I would buy the one without the DVD burner.

I agree. While I do have a DVD burner in my 12" PowerBook, I never used it more than 2 or 3 times. My two Mac mini only have CD burners and I'm not even sure if I made a dozen CD-Rs with either one.

These days it's all hard drives, flash cards, online storage and wireless streaming. :D

Just for comparison; I have burnt thousands of CD/DVD-R's with my three Mac laptops during the last 5 years. The need for hard copies has not suddenly vanished...

I'd agree with a couple other posters though, this doesn't suddenly negate the need for hard copies for everyone. I don't see Apple doing away with optical drive this soon, especially since iDVD is still pretty popular. The SuperDrive is over-priced, but still a necessity for some of us; I only burn a handful of DVDs a year, but when I need to do I want it at my fingertips.

I, for one, don't want thousands of plastic discs in my shelves. ;)

That's why I was talking about hard drive storage. We have Terabyte drives available, and iTunes has spoiled me to the point that I hate having to shuffle discs around, including for movies.

Yes, we still need optical drives, and I'm a bit shocked that Apple still sells computers without SuperDrives (given that iDVD is included with every Mac model). I only meant that for a lot of users, the optical drive is starting to become less and less important.

I don't understand the combo concept, it maybe was a market positioning tool for apple a few years ago, but as we all know today, it's not like a dvd writer costs any more to make .

I would agree, it is a strange choice, just make it a no brainer.

It's to make their products attractive by having a low-price version, yet convince their costumers to go for the higher-priced version.

Wow, the spirit of the season seems to have missed you. I see you have posted over 100 times on MR--does that make you a nerd as well, or do you simply have a problem with this particular thread? In the latter case, can you be more specific about what you feel is wrong with this thread. Might be a bit more helpful.

Its this thread! I don't get the whole "you must have the best Mac" I have three Mini's and they run 24-7 like work horses! I have never had a problem at all ! not like the million of posted problems with the iMac. I have said it a million times until I turn blue in the face, not everyone is racing home to use there Mac for Final Cut Pro. Millions of mac user never use DVD Burning or iLife so all the graphics card crap is just that! it only matters to the nerds.

Well well
People come here to kill time sometimes so of course there will be some bickering going on.
And some posts are pretty reasonable debating certain aspects of mac mini.
I too am a fellow owner. Some things I too don't particularly like about it.
For instance the capacity of the hard drive in the lower model, partly isn't it.
At launch about three years ago we had the same capacity as today. It's this that prevents me from buying a new one.
I am not a nerd just an average user you might say. I only use my mac for an average of over an hour daily nothing more than that. Though I must say I require the need for iDVD and superdrive so I can burn Dvds of the video footage shot on my video camera during my travels. Currently I use one of friends macbook to burn DVDs since my mac mini nor my ibook has a superdrive.
About getting laid, well I have been getting laid since I was 14 years old.
My girlfriend won't be pleased and might even leave me if I curl up with my mac all alone.

Would it be okay if next time you post you have a point?

Sorry if I have upset the Mac upper elite that run this site I should be beaten in the town square for using such fowl and derogatory language against Mac users

Yeah, don't let them get to you... Everyone has their own opinion.

I am one who doesn't particularly recommend the mini. But, it's not because it isn't a great computer. I just don't find it to be a great bargain for it's price / spec ratio.

But, it is a great computer. I've got an older mini, and it's been the most reliable computer ever.

If it was still $499 for the starting model (like it used to be), every one of my complaints about it would be gone.

But, the majority of the reason it isn't such a great price for the performance is because they use laptop parts. If it were desktop parts, the specs could be much higher for the same price.

I understand your point, might be a stupid question but did the G4 Cube have desktop parts ? just wondering

I believe it did.

It had a standard AGP video card that could be replaced, and I believe it's hard drive was a standard 3.5-inch hard drive like the regular desktops.

if apple made the mini that had a desktop cpu, graphics card and desktop hard disk i would buy one in a second. although it would have to be a different form factor most likely a mini tower which would have its own advantages. pci slots anyone?

So I wonder why they dont just introduce a new Intel Cube with a cooling system and desktop parts ? oh well happy holidays everyone :)

PCI slots are not a great importance to me. I rarely install cards anymore. But, perhaps one slot for the video card so it could be replaced.

But, really, for me, the greatest improvement would be a 7200 R.P.M. hard drive that is user replaceable as needed for future upgrades (without major surgery).

In the end, a desktop hard drive would permit for greater performance at a lower build cost.

A dedicated graphics chip would be nice. But, it falls secondary to hard drive capacity and size for me. It's a factor, but not a significant in my use as a fast hard drive for capturing data quickly.
