Macrumors staff, could you provide us with new rumors about Macmini please? This thread is a bit long. :p

Stop posting stuff about the boring iphone and restart to talk about computers. ;)

That's your opinion. Anyone can have an opinion at any time, just as anyone can argue for that opinion at any time.

I went to high school when they were using OS 7.5. They later went to OS 8 and I was sold. Eventually I bought my first Mac, an iMac with 8.6. The reason I went Mac was not that I liked Mac OS better but that I absolutely hated Windows, as I do to this day.

While I agree that OS X is great and better in every way than prior Mac OS's (with the exception of 'print window'), I don't understand peoples point that Windows was better than Mac OS 1-9. While the Mac OS had a serious overhaul in base code (unix) and looks (aqua), the exact same principle of simplicity are not only found in both but are the very reason for their existence.

Shikimo wasn't talking about his personal experience, but the defences PC users offer up as to why they don't switch. In the last 5 years, osX (coupled with the os's of successful consumer devices such as ipods, as I suggested) has managed to bring the majority of ppl round to the idea that apple's interface is more intuitive by default. Regardless of when any of us made the switch and how long that statement's been true for, the idea that PC users are put off by having to learn a new OS, when "Windows works fine for them" as Purrball suggests, hasn't held true for several years. What puts them off is the price, as Eidorian pointed out.

The mini was supposed to offer users a chance to try the OS on an inexpensive computer, but then the intel switch made dual booting possible so that all macs offered switchers an easy-out. So apple put the price up on the mini and since then, it has represented significantly less value for money than it used to as it becomes more and more outdated.

It's hearsay, but a LOT of programmers were bashing Mac OS 1-9 back then. So from a purely technical point of view, Windows was probably better.

One of the main reason I switched is because Apple dropped their old OS and made a new one based on Unix.

Woo hoo! *

Now the Mac Pro in the "Buyer's Guide" has switched status to "Don't Buy - Updates soon"

Just 26 days until both the MacBook and MacBook Pro join the Don't Buy category.

* small things excite me.

Actually I think it's pretty dismal.

Does Apple even sell cutting edge technology any more?

It wouldn't be so bad if Apple cut prices over the life of it's computers. (Yeah O.K. one small exception that AirBook price reduction a while back)

Even the iPods are overdue for updates.

Just as an FYI, check out the new Dell Studio Hybrid desktops.

The Mac Mini now has a rival of sorts. I just love the bamboo flavour. Take it a bit sideways, and we're back to oak veneer cabinets for the telly..

I just ordered one in black with the 20" screen which has a built in web cam and everything came to $789 :) I am a big fan of both Windows and OS X so I dont follow the trends or listen to any of the Windows bashing here I just enjoy both platforms :) *I own hardware from both platforms, I still have a stock Cube that I love :) having a choice is great and what this country is all about freedom of choice :) As much as I also love Apple I must admit they dont give you much of choice with the current line up.

One computer, one box, no 100 Gigabit Ethernet between them. OF COURSE I don't mean the supercomputer arrays!

Who's talking about supercomputers? I'll stack this box up against a Mac Pro any day:

32 Opteron cores, 256GB RAM. I happen to have a personal interest in this product, but I'm sure there are other examples as well.

mac mini and garageband

Is there anyone out the who owns a mac mini and uses garageband to compose music?
I am looking to get a mac(mini) to start my dream of creating music. I am not a David Foster or John Tesh, just a hobbyist how want to share my love of music with my kid.
I know the mac can handle basic internetting, Itunes, photos and some ocasional video. but I just want a mac mini for music.
Any music people out there?:)

I have some musician friends who do a draft sequence of most of what they do on a g4 mini, before they go into the studio to record it properly. I'm sure the current mini can handle it fine. You can always get a firewire sound card (not sure if they use one).

The mini is capable of a lot more than ppl make out. Very few pro apps other than the adobe suite and motion require dedicated gfx. Gfx acceleration (OpenGL etc) still isn't that popular in most audio/video apps, despite what ppl say. The mini can't play 1080p if its high bitrate, but if you compress it down to Photo JPEG QT, you can scrub the timeline just fine with 1080 and more. I'd have thought garageband on a c2d mini would hold up pretty well.

I think what Tallest Skill is referring to is the Mac Pro as a Personal Computer that is available for regular consumers (albeit with deep pockets).

You are talking about a server, which is something quite different than that. It doesn't have a GPU for example. I don't think there is a regular consumer on this planet that has this as his main workstation, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
