And MD was a huge success. Just not in the USA. Doesn't mean they didn't make money on it, Japan loved it like they love Final Fantasy.

Sony is pretty good at picking winning technologies, even if it doesn't have initial popularity.

Honestly, Pioneer need to go back to what they're good at. SOUND EQUIPMENT. JVC IS EATING THEIR LUNCH.

Only a 256 MB video card? "NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics — the fastest integrated graphics processor on the market today — and speedy DDR3 memory. With 48 processing cores and 256MB of shared video memory"

Plus: "up to 8GB of memory"

However, only 2 GB RAM with the 2.4GHz 320GB HDD $699 Mac mini.

Good to see it has HDMI connector.

The price bump is unfortunate. It's now €809 in Germany, which is simply insane (just over $1000).

I'd love to own a "real" Mac, but c'mon, I can build a fully-loaded, fully-functional Hackintosh desktop for that price. And I have no use for a HTPC.

The way I see it, there are two ways Apple could go with the next major version of MacOS. Either they can target the mass market, as they've done with iOS devices, by adding App Store functionality to the OS and selling a $500 Mac. I think they'd be quite successful at that.

Or they can go the "truck" route, pretending that desktop PCs are just for developers and video editors. That would be sad. And it would gain them nothing.

I understand that DVR is good, but I find that I don't need to bother to DVR the shows we watch since I can get them ON Demand or via Hulu. That is why I was referring to mainstream. I can understand the demand on servers, but that means everyone will be watching at the same time...don't know if that will happen given the flexibility. Basically, I still think DVR capabilities are not as important as they used to be, just like no one really records on VHS anymore or remember DVD recorders. I think codecs will improve, the pipe will get bigger and most products will be streamed.

One thing I am not sure of is this "no box" idea. I don't want anything built into my TV that I can't easily upgrade. Display's tend to last longer than other devices (or at least don't get upgraded as often) and I would rather be able to move my old ATV to the master bedroom to make room for the new and I am not going to move my 52" LCD to the bedroom...well I would but the wife wouldn't. Now that isn't saying that I have a box that attaches to the back of my TV. However, it is still a box.

What my main message that I wanted to get across is the UI...it is SO IMPORTANT. So important that Apple chooses a more closed and controlled environment to the apps portion of their products and I don't blame them.

We haven't even touched on the restrictions that the Studio's put on all this.
Windows Media Center does almost all of this. Blu-ray playback isn't standard, yet, and Hulu isn't built-in. You don't need anything beyond Intel GMA HD to exploit video playback acceleration.

They don't charge you for the Guide either.

Way too much money for what you get, Just bought the Gateway 2840 for $469,I'll run XBMC on it, get I3 CPU,6gb Ram,1 TB Drive, Win 7, and more for $200+ Less.

As an aapl investor I see no joy in this release. The Mini will likely fad even more in sales.

I predict a similar (percent wise) price bump (and modest spec bump) for the Air and MP in then next couple of weeks.

Wake up and smell the refried beans baby.................. Apple's future is in their mobile market.

Then I'll angst about the price for a while, put it off, and cope without for another year.
LOL. Sounds like me. I've been very tempted when I see them in the refurb store though.

I planned to get a Mini, got a Core Duo iMac instead. I planned to get a Mini, got the :apple:TV instead. I planned to get a Mini, got an MB instead. I planned to get a Mini, got the iPhone 3G instead....

I do really miss the :apple:TV though, so I will probably get some kind of replacement for it down the line. If Apple does an iOS device this year, that'll probably be it otherwise I'll be looking for something...

If only it wasnt flippin' $699....
I've been considering a Mac Mini and tracking prices. Seems to me that compared to the previous release, 9400M - they simply switched from two standard configurations to one.

MacMini 9400M

2.26 - 160GB - 2GB $599.00

2.53 - 320GB - 4GB $799.00

MacMini 320

2.40 - 320GB - 2GB $699.00

$100 increase gives you:
1) Larger HD (same as 'larger' 9400M)
2) Much better video
3) HDMI
4) SD Slot

Bump the 320 to 4GB and it has the same price as the 'larger' 9400M (but a slightly slower CPU).

I dunno how much embodied emissions and manufacturing costs went into transporting those solid bricks of aluminium and shaving bits off... the finished body is like 5% of the original volume... even though you recycle 95% of the chips you still put a lot of energy into reprocessing... and is kinda ironic to apple's emphasis of its products being green.

the mac mini could've been cast (or forged like the imacs) then machined, unlike its laptop counterpart, it's not exposed to user wear and tear, flexing etc. all it does is that it sits on the desk... if they had picked a different manufacturing process this savings would've been passed onto the consumers directly...

notice on their "the environment" page they only talk about the power savings and the recyclablility of aluminium -- and note that in terms of recyclability, the internal components make up most of the mass and they are not as recyclable as the shell, which is like 5% of the mass.

just some food for thought.

Yes, but if money savings is essential to you, then those prices are not what'd you use, you'd use the refurb prices.
The refurb 2.26 is 499 i believe, so $200 savings is significant, along with a $10 tax savings as well.

lol that's the drive I'm already putting in. I just want to know what type of Torx they are. I can't tell if they're 5 or 6-star. :)
This just in, in an e-mail from SMALL DOG ELECTRONICS, an APPLE reseller,on an inquiry from me, re the new MINI

"In terms of the mac mini, it does look like the drive is not user installable, and after looking through the service manual, it may not be possible to install a 3rd party drive at all. It appears that Apple has integrated one of the thermal sensors onto the drive, and the only way to get a new sensor is to buy a new replacement drive from Apple".

FYI! So much for 7200 RPM upgrades:eek:

Just what did you think drove the stock to $271, and wait till the MBA is released, then the CDMA iPhone, It all adds up to $350 a share, and part of it is the Mini;)

Admitedly I haven't played with Media Center in a long time, never even bothered with Win7. I did some searching...how easy is it to rent movies? Seems easier on my Xbox than the Media Center.

What I find is that there is not a one box solution for all needs. Wonder why?

The one box solution still appears to be stuff of legend.

In my experience, Windows Media Center or Home Server with a Xbox as an extender and HTPC-like platform is extremely cost effective. Windows Media Center alone was able to persuade me to get Windows 7.

Maybe I should upgrade my one Windows Media Center computer and try it out.

To be honest, I lost interest in Media Center when all the issues with the cablecard couldn't be resolved. I believe it still falls short of what was intended. My goal is to reduce clutter and it feels like Hulu may be the answer (at least with cable) but it is SO DARN DIFFICULT to get it on my TV consistently...right now I use Play On. However, still have to keep the cable box because...you guessed it...User Interface. Path of least resistance.

 :(

Surely they can't have integrated a sensor into the drive? Maybe it's in the black drive housing (from the iFixit photos)..... but in the drive itself!? If Apple have made it so that the drive isn't replaceable with a 3rd party one (heck even by paying an Apple Store to do the labour) then that's a very bad move by them!

I think it has potential for the home theatre but there are two problems for me:

1. No blu-ray. For a home theatre box this would be really nice. I'm really looking for a way to get rid of my PS3 for watching blu-ray movies...it gets hot and the fan gets really loud.
Erm get an External Blu-ray drive and use with MakeMKV (+ Plex for playback although not 100% on that)? not hard really is it :p

Seems a move they made with the last iMac that is rippling through as machines are updated.

This would seem to be a great "media pc" to resurrect that term - with the HDMI and a wireless keyboard, I could see it being better in the living room than an Apple TV with the full internet available and the ever-larger selection of on-line video available.

Never heard about that! (I have no interest in iMac, got a gaming PC for regular desktop use).

Had a brief read of https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/808178/ and they seemed to reckon to just short the cable, thus making it record that the hard drive is stone-cold all the time. Guess that's fine for SSD users, but for anyone putting a 7200RPM in!
Though actually, as the Mini only has one fan perhaps it's not too much of an issue? As yeah the HDD sensor will always report as being cold, but the other sensors will still work (and thus change the fan speed) and I guess it would only cause an issue if you did something that got the hard-drive really hot but absolutely no load on the CPU.

Where is the IR sensor for the Apple Remote? I see the little white sleep light but nothing that would be the IR sensor. On the server one there is a bigger black dot like an IR sensor but I don't see anything like that on the regular one. Is it hidden inside the disc slot or something? I looked on the store and you can get the Apple Remote with it. Huh.
