You have to watch the video on that page.

Flash works on the Wii as well. My connection is painfully slow and it shows though compared to a x86 computer.

You'll have to excuse my memory of the wii, its been 3 years since Ive touched one.

I agree with longofest. It's not quite worth the $100 extra they're asking, but darn it if it isn't one amazing little machine.

Yeah, I agree. I think the article gets it right when it says it's like a laptop without a screen. It has a tiny bit more power than my macbook air. Who are these targeted at again? It's so close to a macbook price/performance wise, I'm not sure what nitch these fall into. Home theater... I suppose.

If you can extol the virtues of buying a $999 Mac mini server with an unlimited client copy of OS X Server and 2 500 GB hard drives as a HTPC then please do so. Unless a HTPC needs to run a directory server, Apache, and NetInstall. Maybe my priorities are wrong.

Oh for goodness sake, I've said it more than once, more than twice that if I were interested in buying the Mac mini server that I would install the standard retail version of Snow Leopard, are you purposely ignoring that each time I write it?

DVR is not dying. Even Jobs effectively said so. The cable/tv box folks have the upper hand right now. Their boxes tend to do a mix of on demand and DVR ( although the UIs could use some improvement. )

Likewise broadcast transmission of content is several orders magnitude more efficient. Broadcast over one channel and 10 million DVRs can stream "American Idol" to disk in a 10 million way parallel operation. If had 10 million computers all beating up on a single set of servers... servers probably croaks ( ala iPhone pre-order meltdown. ). If millions of folks want copies of exactly the same thing at exactly the same time it is far , far, far, far more effective to just do a general broadcast that everyone copies.

The DVR (with very large storage capacity ) allows users to time shift the view to whenever they want. Once on the disk DVRs is just as good as ATV (minor quibbles about interface preferences and widgets notwithstanding. A simple navigation interface is all really need. ).

Pandora and Hulu are likely to work straight from the TV in a couple of years. Not even going to need any external box to make it work. It will stream straight from their servers to the TV's internet connection. If not going to store it (or only storing a temporary cache buffer) neither ATV nor DVR storage is of much benefit or added value at all.

I understand that DVR is good, but I find that I don't need to bother to DVR the shows we watch since I can get them ON Demand or via Hulu. That is why I was referring to mainstream. I can understand the demand on servers, but that means everyone will be watching at the same time...don't know if that will happen given the flexibility. Basically, I still think DVR capabilities are not as important as they used to be, just like no one really records on VHS anymore or remember DVD recorders. I think codecs will improve, the pipe will get bigger and most products will be streamed.

One thing I am not sure of is this "no box" idea. I don't want anything built into my TV that I can't easily upgrade. Display's tend to last longer than other devices (or at least don't get upgraded as often) and I would rather be able to move my old ATV to the master bedroom to make room for the new and I am not going to move my 52" LCD to the bedroom...well I would but the wife wouldn't. Now that isn't saying that I have a box that attaches to the back of my TV. However, it is still a box.

What my main message that I wanted to get across is the UI...it is SO IMPORTANT. So important that Apple chooses a more closed and controlled environment to the apps portion of their products and I don't blame them.

We haven't even touched on the restrictions that the Studio's put on all this.

Seriously, have you looked at Remote Buddy?

I am not a fan of touch screen only remotes. You continually have to look at the touch screen to operate. Combo remotes with HARD buttons are the way to go. This is just my humble opinion and results may vary. Again, all to do with the User Interface.

By the way, yes I have heard of Remote Buddy and think it is fairly cool for certain things. But that is me and my propeller speaking...not mainstream. Don't forget that "mainstream" covers a lot of age groups.

I'm really tired of hearing about BD. BD isn't even doing that well against DVDs. I think people realize that content delivery is quickly moving onto the internet.

Sony manages to pick an awful lot of loser formats.

According to imation BD is being adopted faster than DVD.

---

You do realise that CD was a joint effort between Sony and Philips, that DVD was a joint effort between Sony, Philips and Pioneer, and that BD was a joint effort between Sony and Philips.

Sony is a major part of all consumer optical media in use today. Sony is darn good at making winner formats.

illusions

old Mini: 6.5"x 6.5"x 2" = 84,5
new Mini: 7.7" x 7.7" x 1.4" = 83

less than 2% smaller. Optical illusions...

Excuse me but since when was Mac Mini ever loud? I can’t hear mine even from my desk right there in front of me. It’s DEAD quiet. It’s not a feature of the new mini exclusively.

Core2Duo WTF ?...799 Euros = Almost $1000....sorry Apple that's a ****ing joke but you sure find enough idiots!!!

So from the iFixit teardown....

Looks like a regular laptop 2.5" SATA HDD then :). How long before someone here sticks an SSD in?!

About the ODD, and all the Blu-ray questions. Remember guys that on the old Mac Mini you could replace the ODD with a Blu-ray drive, as it took a regular laptop slim slot-loading SATA drive (12.5mm IIRC).... but on the MacBook Pros you can't, as they take super-slim slot loading SATA drives at 9.5mm... which there are no Blu-ray drives available in!

Anyone know what this Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) Super Multi DVD Rewriter model GA32N is? SATA or PATA? Slim or Super-slim? 12.5mm or 9.5mm?

As if they've kept the same 12.5mm size and SATA connection, changing it for a Blu-ray is possible .....

New Mac mini is simply awesome! I will probably buy one in the near future!

I have a 2.5" inch SSD to put in it!!!!!! :-D

Didn't take long then!

Will wait until a decent FW800 external hard drive caddy comes out that matches the new Mac Mini design-wise.

Then I'll angst about the price for a while, put it off, and cope without for another year.

And how many formats have Toshiba, Pioneer, JVC won/lost?

3/5 is more than 50%.

ATRAC was a audio format, not a media format.

Do you know how can Video Cassette formats there were? There were tons other than Betamax and VHS.

And MD was a huge success. Just not in the USA. Doesn't mean they didn't make money on it, Japan loved it like they love Final Fantasy.
