If you guys just want a kick ass media player that plays it all with aplump look for the iStar Mini, it uses sigma designs latest HD chipset.

Im a greedy b*stard so im getting a new mini and the iStar:cool:

wouldn't it be cheaper and better if you just set up your current computer to your tv and use divix or something to play all your media on your tv.

And if you want a media compnent u could just buy a ps3 cause that has a divix codec in it and it is HD plus you can watch blueray and play games all on the same console.:p
but id doesn't mater what ever works for u is good this is just another idea:)

o and im greedy too so yeh id prob buy both too. lol

I have a PS3 and while the recently added divx support is nice and much appreciated, file sizes cap out at a 2gb limit. That wasn't fun when my 360 was surpassing this limit for quite some time now. Things will get better on size limits for consoles but the mini is the current king of the hill when you can also subscribe to free hd content through itunes. Now, if they found a way to stream media from your mac to a console, that would be awesome.

Yes, I stand corrected. I downloaded the new firmware last night but I wasn't aware of the 2gb limit removal. Here's the clip.

HD media, with smooth fast forwarding and not having to close down all the apps etc.

The PS3 is noisey and its media capabilities are poor compared to the iStar (But thats because sony wont allow it, not because it doesnt have the power)

and I do play games on my PS3.

Your Idea is bluntly lacking knowledge of the media scene, do some reading up;)

like I said it has Sigma Designs HD Blueray processing chip, you can connect USB devices to it and ESata Hardrives for storage.

It has its own web browser and gives access to You Tube and more, it will even play Matroska Container Video Files.

Im still getting a Mini because a Mini can do so much more, but as a Media Player Istar > Mini (however a mini would be a good partner for an Istar as it can access the mini's storage down a local network)

Ps3 has the potential to be the best but Sony will never loosen the reigns that much, as it will lose control over its machine, and it will always be noisey, the istar has a fan but the company have disconnected its cable so its almost silent.

aight thanks

i had another question bout the ps3
sry i know its off topic!!
but
is it possible to view a hard drive if you have connected it to airport extreme and have it a part of the network the ps3 is on!! :)

Last year I was planning on buying a HTPC before getting Mac Fever, and ended up picking up a PS3 for my hidef needs instead. I own a bunch of Blu-Rays, but most of my media is grabbed online, stripped and converted in GOTsent and then played back on the PS3. It's a good little media machine.

For a console.

As I was lucky to get a 60gb UK model which has retained its value, I'm now planning on selling it to buy one of the new mac minis if it comes out (or an old one if it gets officially discontinued). I won't be able to play BD anymore sure, but I'll have a wider codec choice without header conversions, it'll keep my multichannel in place.. oh and I'll also be able to do my Final Cut and Logic Pro sessions on my 50" HD screen. Something the PS3 can't. Heck, I've got an Xbox 360 so I do all my gaming on that, and only my housemate has ever bought games for the PS3. It's an alright console, and it'll certainly improve with time.. but I just got that Mac Mini urge.

I am the only person here that would be happy with a standard update?
I bought my Mini in august when they last updated it, at first I was a bit miffed they had not bothered to include wireless N. But when I consider what I use my Mini (connected to a 42inch HD plasma) to do:
Watch Digital TV
Automatically record all my favourite shows (two at once)
Watching / downloading HD movies or DVD's
iTunes for house parties! and itunes server for house
Email, Internet, iChat, Skype
WoW (geeky I know)
My mini is on 24 hours a day and is a low power device!
I have ONE remote for everything (apple remote)
This machine looks great and gets more use than every other mac I have used (since my first LC III). They are a bargain in my opinion.

Well, there's at least one other. I'll immediately buy another assuming the "standard update" brings them to parity with the current MacBooks.

I know even the imacs are getting behind!!
the standard imac has worse specs and is more expensive than the macbook... thats just wrong desktops should be a lot better and cheaper than laptops, thats just the way it works!!:(
when apple decides to smarten up and make the imacs better i will buy one imedietly but until then ill have to wait,.. hopefully not for very long:eek:

I'd bet that the new iMacs will be spec'd similarly to MacBook Pros. (Except, perhaps, for a down-spec'd entry level model.) When they'll show up is the real question. Seems like it should be soon, though, since iMacs seem to have been in clearance mode at the Apple store for several weeks.

Why do you believe that? A Macbook Pro can drive a 30" ACD. I don't see dual-link DVI in the Mini's future.
I said iMac, not Mini, which was admittedly a bit OT, but in direct response the the quoted post.

I don't see the Mini's exceeding a MacBook. I just hope they equal them.

The whole thing that bugs me is...the only Mac that can have dual (or for that matter...more than one) internal HD, and have the ability to easy-upgrade the optical drive...plus have a removable video card...IS the Mac Pro

Mac Pro -- starting at $2299. yes

The iMac is great, the Mac Mini is great (if you say so) but they are basically disposable computers, you can't really upgrade anything but the RAM.

So, if you want a real desktop, you are thrown into the super-pro-tower-macpro category. Have any of you seen a Mac Pro ad on TV (or a MacBook Pro ad)? NO --- they are trying to market their un-upgradable computers. Doesn't make sense when Dell is all over their XPS stuff...trying to get it out there.

Edit: Yeah you can upgrade the drives on those macs (iMac and Mac mini and MacBook), but it's not a "user-upgradable" feature.

Well, they're just as upgradable as RAM. Certainly not as friendly as any of the other Macs, but I can replace a Mini's hard drive in about 15 minutes.

You can also replace the cpu - any socket M Yonah or Merom will do.

So my refurb 1.83 Core Duo Mini came in today...and out of my surprise instead of the 512MB advertised I got 2GB!

Now I don't really care if the updates are due :D
