I'd be happy for a mac mini as a web server. It wont need a screen (except for initial set up). Would prefer a faster cpu and larger hard disk to the current offering. If the form factor would stack with the time capsule (without either device running too hot) then it would be even better.

It should also have 2 - 4gb of ram of a server and no laptop HD.

also it should a low end 16 - 32 meg video chip like real severs and call a mac mini server.

I was holding out for a hybrid Mac-mini / Apple TV to act as a proper media centre. I was actually going to get a Mac Mini and EyeTV combo anyway, for around £350 the dream solution for home entertainment, but if Apple can put a freeview/freesat tuner and a programme guide in a Mac Mini, even better!

I just ordered the Mac mini for 499 euro's (the 1.83ghz model), couldn't wait longer :p Hopefully Apple won't announce a new Mac mini next week :D Despite all the comments about the outdated hardware, I hope my first experience with Mac OS X (Mac in general to be honest) will be a positive one :)

I just returned my sealed Mac Mini 2.0 C2D back to the Apple store in hopes of a possible update in the near future. The worst that's going to happen, is I'll go back and buy it again for the same price.

Who knows, maybe on the 14th instead of product updates, maybe Apple will lower prices across the board. Wouldn't that be nice :D

Well, this is half-good news. There was nothing about desktops (of course), but they did say they were moving all computers to Nvidia. From the look of things an updated Mac mini would have the NVidia 9400M, which would be a really great upgrade (especially compared to the current intel GMA950).

What's sad is that nobody asked about the Mac mini in the Q&A period.

Seconded - very suprised no one asked about the mini at the Q7A before it wrapped up. Looking at the new laptops instead of a mini for me tomorrow. Can only wait so long.

Can't wait to build a new hackintosh for the 9400M!

I hear you, but that will probably present a driver challenge.

Right now I am considering building another Hackintosh, but I am at the crossroads debating which mobo and processor to use.

Seems I may go that way, except, I love the portability of a laptop. :( Hackintoshs.. are they possible with any laptops out there?

It should have the 9400m / 9500m with 128-256 of it's own ram with front usb and firewire.

$500-$600 system 2gb of ram super drive. 128 vram or lower end with a desktop at the higher end.

$700-$800 system 4gb of ram super drive 256 vram or full size desktop.

Any currently on the markey with an Intel CPU.

just noticed your sig Ben, I'm using a Mac book Pro 17" hires glossy as home desktop (with apple wired external usb keyboard, logitech MX revolution wireless mouse and a rain design Mstand) how does that compare to the freightliner?

I'm also annoyed they didn't continue with 17" screen in the refreshed product line. The model I have is now the only 1920x1200 laptop screen by Apple.

The notebook line, while premium and pricey, is for the most part all inclusive. They are also, unfortunately, more expandable than my iMac.

I thought you had to make sure it not only has an Intel CPU, but that you had to check the motherboard, graphics card etc and make sure that each was one that people had had success using in a Hackintosh.

I was directed to this page, for example, when asking about building a Hackintosh: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.5.2

Prior to yesterday's release of the Geforce 9400MG used in the Macbooks, there had been no third party chipsets for mobile intel CPUs for years. Every single core and core 2 notebook used the same 945M and 965M chipsets as Apple.

if they aren't going to update the mac mini until january (which i think might be obvious now) it will have not been updated for more than 500 days

since it's already "ridiculous" now i'm not sure how we should even call it over the next 3 months

i propose "mac-miniculous" as new word

You have a great point. If there isn't an unannounced mini upgrade before the end of this month it looks like that January would be the earliest. 500 days is a long time to be left twisting in the breeze.

Be careful - the compatibility is extremely variable. The CPU may work, but who wants laptop with no sound, no wireless, no ethernet, terrible battery life etc etc. I'd have a good look through hardware compatibility lists on the osx86project wiki before you go out and purchase a non-Apple laptop for OS-X

It's kinda funny, on Amazon.com, the low end Mac Mini (which is officially at the end of its life) out-sells the new iMacs. It would be stupid for Apple to kill off the Mini.
