Here is exactly what Apple needs to do. They say they want users to switch over from Windows to OS X here is the how....

2.8-3.0 Dual Core Mini
2 Gigs Ram Standard- Upgradeable to 4 Gigs
4 USB ports 1 Firewire
160 gig HD standard
256 gig Nvidia card- User upgradable later (or the newest onboard with Nvidia option)
10.5.5 Standard and drum role please.....

$599.99 for Base cost upgrades to 799.99 for all the bells and whistles

This system would sell out over the holidays... Also with the Imacs getting a boost in speed and graphics and pricing starting at 1100 it's not much in the way of competition..

Apple needs to get the people in under 1000.00 I know they love their money but if more people switch over they can recoup that cost in software and .ME services as well..

That would be a nice little setup, but getting a 2.8GHz chip into that puppy would not be for the cheap of heart -- $799.99 for the 2.8GHz config MIGHT be possible, with a 2.6GHz running less. Or rather a 2.4Ghz / 2.6GHz might be more likely in the picture as something Apple would do. It wouldn't be Penryn, it would be Santa Rosa, but it would be alot..Alot..ALOT faster than the current 2.0GHz one.

Hmm, anyone got any mockups of what Apple could do to the mini, if it wanted to redesign it?

Mac Mini

I have classified sources that have told me that the Mac book update Oct. 14 will also bring new Macs such as a Mac mini and a new mace pro. The specifications I have been told are this:

Standard:
2.4 GHz
6 MB shared
2 GB ram (upgradeable to 4)
160 GB hardrive

Unfortunately my sources didn’t tell me the processor or if they are changing the illustration. This standard one will start at $499 it is very in expensive (not as good RAM quality) but there will be a few downgrades to put the price there but it will be worth it just wait a month. There will be one more Verizon of the mini costing more but I don’t have the specifications sorry!

super drive in all?
real video card / video card with it's own ram?
$700 for a super drive is to high with on board video.

A bigger case with desktop parts will fit.

Ha ha $499 right! LOL my sources tell me that you have lost your mind :)

Atom 330

Surely the redesigned MacMini will use the Atom 330 chip that was released last week.

A silent running Atom 330 system T7-HSG with 2GB ram and 500GB HD without Windows installed costs only £270 ($500 dollars).

If they don't opt for this cheaper option, I'd really like to see the Hackintosh community focus some attention on a cheap off-the-shelf system such as this.

or they could produce a smaller, cheaper version of the imac, such as a 15" model

That would pretty much kill the iMac sales.

Using a dual-core atom would result in a serious performance hit compared to the current Mini. If it's going to happen, you'll see it built on Penryn, hopefully with x4500hd.

I would imagine that a MacMiniNano could be targeted as a secondary computer for the house, hooked up to any modern TV (one with DVI//VGA input) to entice the users to surf the web or more importantly to use iTunes.
The Atom 330 should be even able to show iTunes's HD content without a stutter.

If there is a significant drop in performance, Apple may welcome it to separate the product from the iMac. After all, MacMini's have always been the cheapest, smallest and neatest device to run full OSX so I can't see how they'll ignore the Atom 330.
The best explanation I have for the MacMini waiting this long for an update is that they were waiting this chip to be launched, so now is the time for an announcement (also may partly explain the new product codes rumoured today).

So, scrap the AppleTV and relaunch the MacMini as the eeePC of desktops.

While this may be true for 720p content, it won't be true for 1080p, unless they lower the bit rate substantially. But then you'd lose the benefits of 1080p, so what would be the point?

It this were to occur, you'd witness an exponential increase in the number of hackintoshes.

I don't know what you buys are paying for the top spec Mini, but I'd happily pay the UK asking price ( around $1000 ) if they just beefed up the graphics card to give it a real chance of playing 'most' games and added HDMI out with a Blu-ray drive.

That's got to be achievable, surely ??

Just drop the 20" iMac to $999 and kill the mini off. There would be no need for it at that point.

Unless you want to decide what screen you use. I'm happy with my Mini and my choice of monitor, plus other devices work off my monitor. Now if the iMac did same them maybe i'd be tempted. However all in one devices are a compromise i'm not too comfortable with on a home computer.

The mini is a great idea, but way too expensive. I agree with CWallace - drop iMac to $999 but put the base mini at $499!

They should achieve that by simplifying architecture and putting in regular drives, making it the Mac Mini Maxi. It would need slightly more room, maybe, due to the drive.

Make it so people can open it up and work the memory and drive themselves. With a 20" display it should be $999, like an iMac but obviously with the benefit of swapping out the computer as updates occur.

I still root for the idea of making the mini a dock for a portable tablet that becomes the screen and partial memory and computing power of a twin system. Doubt that will happen, but it would solve a lot of people's computer needs with a system for home and away.

Its not that expensive, it just obsolete and poorly equipped.

just to throw an idea about.

What happens if the macmini is in fact the new iMac? Remember that patent that was released that stated that some box slid into the side of the monitor . Imagine for a minute if Apple made the macmini slide into an external monitor (macmini being the brains of the computer) thous becoming the iMac? The iMac would be the "host" for the macmini. This could then also merge the cinema displays and iMac monitors together too in the same way.

This would actually lower productions cost as Apple would theoretically be developing 1 product. But still have many products to cover the different markets.

Apple then could release macmini's in mulitple configurations thous allowing the consumer the option to "configure" (in it's simplest form) their own iMac based on the macmini variant's or just buy the macmini as a headless computer.

that would make it less powerful then before no thanks

I'd be happy for a mac mini as a web server. It wont need a screen (except for initial set up). Would prefer a faster cpu and larger hard disk to the current offering. If the form factor would stack with the time capsule (without either device running too hot) then it would be even better.

the thing about apple is..it never likes to offer you an "incomplete" experience. The other issue is..how long will such a product matrix last, it means you have to keep on having additional components or keeping the shape or certain part of the design to allow the mac mini to attach itself. For how many product generations?

Nice idea, but I doubt they will implement in that manner. The support for breakdown of such machine could be high..And Apple likes to milk it's customer. Apple charges a premium for the cinema display compared to the iMac. How much revenue will it lose? Also I believe marketing dept will highlight its causes market confusion..is it a iMac or a monitor..the more confusing your product line, the more you deter the consumer from buying. Good for low end (value buyer) consumer , bad for pros, etc who wants a "serious" machine.

They could have integrated the Apple TV and Airport Express together..but they choose not to.

Milk the customers. And no product confusion.

I can only guess time will tell what the slide in box is..maybe a component/HDMI input option or Apple TV box option?

:D Yes, I'm sure it would sell out, having the only 256GB GPU on the market.
