What build is it?

All I want to know is the build number. Don't give a monkey's about ship date. Apple will announce that when their good and ready.

I want to know the build number

Build # or it didn't happen. :|

Someone who reads and writes Japanese would have to learn that from the source at Engadget Japan. Hopefully someone over there is following up...?

So the retail full version requires a previous installation of OS X now?

What? I thought the $29 version was the full install. I suppose you insert it and if it sees Leopard it will allow to earse and do a clean install?

So what's the story with Apple not officially announcing the release on their website? They seem to continue selling Leopard 10.5.6 knowing that people will cry that they just purchased it.
I just bought another Mac, and it came with Leopard. But that's what I wanted. I have some hardware (FW audio interfaces, etc.) that may not get SL support for months so it was important to me to buy before SL was the only OS shipping.

Oh, and I'll still get the up-to-date SL discs for two Macs for the cost of shipping ($9.95/each).

Apple has been pretty good about this sort of thing, though there will always be someone who bought one day earlier than the cutoff. Even still, I can't see that the $29 SL upgrade would be a huge upgrade issue for anyone.

I'm looking forward to it. I expect it to be faster, better, and to atone for my sins.

I still can't preorder from the Apple Online Store.

I want to do the up-to-date thing for my 13" Macbook Pro and get a single normal licence for my Mac Mini (Core 2, shipped with Leopard).

I can qualify my Macbook Pro just fine, but when I click on the green button, it says my shopping cart is empty. And yes, I have cookies enabled and tried it with both Safari and FIrefox. Tech support couldn't help me either, said I could try sending in the form by mail. Does anyone else have this problem? It's the german store by the way.

I have a question, which has probably been answered, but given the mess Snow Leopard has caused on here, I'll ask again.

My Father in Law has my old 2006 white 17" Intel Core Duo iMac. That model obviously came with Tiger preinstalled and came with Tiger restore discs. He has since upgraded to Leopard with a retail copy I bought to upgrade, however he has gone and lost the disc. So while he's upgraded to Leopard, will he be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard, or will Snow Leopard ask for him to insert the Leopard DVD into his iMac for confirmation?

My 20" Core 2 Duo iMac, bought in March this year, came with Leopard installed and the Leopard restore discs, so I know I am fine regardless. However my Father in Law would like to upgrade, and if his carelessness has caused him to lose out on Leopard then I'll upgrade and rub his nose in it. :D

Many thanks.

State your sources... Anyway, that would suck if you pop in a new hard disk, having to first install leopard and then sl.
Taking a page from HLDan.

Secondly, we don't know what the upgrade disc will do if you have a clean hard drive or only have a Time Machine backup. We've been asking these questions for months too.

It should let you restore from Time Machine before it'll say that it cannot install OS X on the Mac.

10.0 Cheetah 3 Days
10.1 Puma 4 Days
10.2 Jaguar 38 Days
10.3 Panther 16 Days
10.4 Tiger 17 Days
10.5 Leopard 10 Days

So if 10.6 is mainly performance and structural enhancements, the key question is:

"will 10.7 SomeCat be released in 2010? and what is in it?"

No nose rubbing for you. The installation doesn't require you to pop in any discs, enter any serial numbers, or anything. You just install.

He may be fine the first time, as it would see that he has Leopard installed. If he ever wiped the disk, he may be SOL.

In all likelihood, it will just ask to "see" the disk to make sure that you paid Apple the way they want you to. I highly doubt it will require you to full on install Leopard, as SL is NOT a service pack, but rather a full blown OS.

Keep in mind that NONE of us know for sure about the install/upgrade process yet. This is ALL speculation.

:D Cheers mate, appreciate the reply.

I was sure I read a post somewhere a while back saying Snow Leopard's installer for the $29 version would ask those who upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to "prove" they had paid for Leopard by asking for your retail copy.

As I said, I bought Leopard from the Apple Store here in Glasgow to upgrade my 2006 17" Core Duo iMac, and when I got my new iMac this year I handed all the discs and documents over with the computer ... and the silly sod went and lost it.

In fairness, he's still got the box and Apple stickers though.:p

There is generally only 1 reason people want to know the build number so bad, so they can bittorrent it. Thats why Apple hasn't released that information yet.

To those that hate the secrecy of Apple and think its somehow damanging their reputation ... did you forget that you are on a site called Mac Rumors ?! Keeping it all a secret until release day and not talking about future products is what makes Apple, this will never change.

There are two links for the up-to-date program. One for purchases made "directly from the Apple Online Store" and one for "an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorised Reseller". Try both and see if one of them works.

Yeah, that's true.

And you've also got to ask, who is tight enough to download a torrent for a piece of software worth $29/£20?

I mean, if you can afford the Macintosh hardware then surely you can afford the measly $29/£20 for a disc.

If he still has the box complete with bar code and everything, he may be able to take that to the Apple store and get a new disk. I know the Apple store I go to here in the States has been VERY understanding and helpful regarding my install disk. He may be able to talk his way into getting a new disk if he really needs it...

Is $29 too expensive for everyone? Why does the build number even matter to you?

They should call this the Rampant Piracy thread where people pretend not to be pirates. The only reason you could possibly want the build so badly is to know that the copy you pirated will accept updates. Let's face it, very few of you are actually devs, know how to code in obj-c and very few of you are in the Apple Developer program. You could argue that those "very few" are the ones who are interested, but you know it and I know it, most of you are pirating it.

For some people, it's the sheer fact that they can save even that $29.

There are some people who will drive clear across town to save a couple of bucks, even though the cost in gas to get there will negate it. It's the fact that they *found*, using their own "ingenuity" a deal that others might not know about.

"Look at the deal I got on these pickled yams! I don't need them, but LOOK AT THIS DEAL!!!"

where to buy locally?

any ideas where we can buy a copy on launch day if we're not near an Apple store?

Looks like it's just apple.com or amazon? No local retailers?

Hmm, interesting mate ... I'll definitely pass that info onto him.

Cheers! :D
