Yeah, that's true.

And you've also got to ask, who is tight enough to download a torrent for a piece of software worth $29/£20?

I mean, if you can afford the Macintosh hardware then surely you can afford the measly $29/£20 for a disc.

Precisely why I have never torrented a copy of OS X. The price (even the $129) is plenty reasonable in my mind, and I will gladly pay for such well made software.

Windows on the other hand... lets just say that I need to have it for school, and the price simply is not right :p (and before we get into an argument over the right/wrong of torrenting, I will just say that I know that torrenting is wrong. but I don't care. there. done.)

Anyone else planning on being at your Apple Store Friday morning? I'm still trying to decide whether I want to go to the trouble of a clean install or not though.

any ideas where we can buy a copy on launch day if we're not near an Apple store?

Looks like it's just apple.com or amazon? No local retailers?

I assume BestBuy will carry it, in their apple section. Then I again, I never noticed a copy of OS X there among all the other Mac software . . .

There's a delay in them getting new products though.

That's why I said to inquire with them - and not "show up expecting to go home happy." ;)

I just checked my local BB stores' stock. 5 of the 6 stores in my area have Leopard in stock, in store.

For some people, it's the sheer fact that they can save even that $29.

There are some people who will drive clear across town to save a couple of bucks, even though the cost in gas to get there will negate it. It's the fact that they *found*, using their own "ingenuity" a deal that that others might not know about.

"Look at the deal I got on these pickled yams! I don't need them, but LOOK AT THIS DEAL!!!"

That there, the comment in bold, annoys me so much ... my wife is the prime culprit for that! She'll drive past the Shell garage selling Unleaded for 1.03 to drive another 5 minutes to the Tesco garage because they're 99.9! It's just under 4 pence of a difference, and when you fill the tank up fully the cost difference is virtually nothing!

I try to tell her, but does she listen? Noooo .... I get hit with words like "Recession" and "Credit Crunch", at which point I suddenly hear the birds sing and the wind blow before realising I've managed to enter "My Happy Place". :D

Since the Apple Store in Glasgow is 5 minutes walk from my work office, I'll definitely take a walk down there during my lunch break to see if Snow Leopard is on the shelves.

If it is, cool ... if not, Leopard is more than adequate and has served me well.

The thing is, see when I install Snow Leopard, I hope I see the benefit of this update in terms of speed. I'm not expecting miracles, but I fear the release has been so hyped up on here that it's doomed to fail everyone's expectations when we finally have it on our systems.

Ah, the sweet smell of innocence.

You're right, of course, but these days the appetite for FREE things is beyond control.

I imagine they will keep selling leopard for some time after SL is released, mainly because it is the last version to support PPC processors.

Just like they sold Tiger for a long time after Leopard was released because Tiger was the last OS supported by many systems.

I just bought another Mac, and it came with Leopard. But that's what I wanted. I have some hardware (FW audio interfaces, etc.) that may not get SL support for months so it was important to me to buy before SL was the only OS shipping.

If I were buying a new system I would want the choice too.

Not so much the smell of innocence mate, I know all about torrents, but as you said the urge to have "free stuff" these days is insatiable ... and "Recession" is nothing but an excuse, and a feeble one at that.

I think Apple is very clever with these occasional "slips" to keep the chatter up about Snow Leopard. On the websites, then off again...

My view of Snow Leopard is it's like a $30 tune up for our expensive computers. I pay a heck of a lot more for tune ups for my car...do I notice any "improved performance"? Not really, but I feel better having done it. I'll get Snow Leopard as soon as its available.

I guess I'm a good patsy for :apple:
:p

I suspect there's a lot of cross-over between those who have/will torrent it and those who will buy it. Some people can't resist having the newest thing first.

You're telling me the recession isn't just in the US!?!!!

You can get Vista Home for $99.99 which is cheaper than OS X.

Why is there a full version?

Why does there need to be a full version of any OS X version? You can only install OS X on Apple hardware so isn't anyone who buys OS X in a box upgrading?

It is true that people who build hackintoshes didn't buy Apple hardware but surely Apple is not taking them into account.

The SL page says:"Coming September 2009 with every new Mac." That doesn't say anything about when boxed upgrade copies are on the way. My UTD US order still says "Ships: September" though.

Hehe . . . Priceless!

i think we all have one of those places. ;)
