Is $29 too expensive for everyone? Why does the build number even matter to you?

They should call this the Rampant Piracy thread where people pretend not to be pirates. The only reason you could possibly want the build so badly is to know that the copy you pirated will accept updates. Let's face it, very few of you are actually devs, know how to code in obj-c and very few of you are in the Apple Developer program. You could argue that those "very few" are the ones who are interested, but you know it and I know it, most of you are pirating it.

Keep in mind that people pirate music to avoid paying $1.

I don't think your accusatory tone is fair, though - I plan to buy SL, and not pirate it, and I'm interested in knowing the build number. Is it a release that's been seeded to devs? Is it stable?

This is a mess... this speculation is nonsense!

Nonsense? THIS. IS. MACRUMORS!

Love it!

I hate to go off-topic, but I just have to post this. You've inspired me.

Photoshop job of the year (not by me), done just before Steve returned:

So is Apple taking orders on the $29 upgrade copy yet or is it just on Amazon?

Secondly, will Amazon get it on release day then to me 2 days later or will I get it from Amazon on release day?

Christmas comes early this year - no need to curse it. Shipping BEFORE a deadline is often regarded as an admirable thing, one would imagine.

give it up!

what?

@Shake:

Can't one do an erase and install with an upgrade disk by using disk utility and formating the HD?

What non-Apple hardware can OS X be installed on?

I plan on wiping my HD clean and installing a fresh SL install with the UTD upgrade disk. Are you saying this disk won't have disk utility?

Amazon

I highly doubt Amazon will get it to you on release date. It's likely Amazon won't even receive their shipment until the release date. And their free shipping on Snow Leopard says it may take 10-12 business days for delivery (extra processing time due to free shipping, ground UPS service, etc).

It's been rare that Amazon could even get me a Blu-ray or DVD release on its launch date with Amazon Prime shipping. Unless they explicitly state release date delivery, don't expect it.

If Apple were my friend, I doubt the friendship would last very long due to my friend's secretive nature.

But, what if every once and awhile, your friend gave you a brand new shiny amazing thing that nobody had ever seen and basically functions like magic? You'd forgive them.

You're telling me the recession isn't just in the US!?!!!

Sarcasm or not, unfortunately not mate ... my wife is just back in employment after being made redundant twice in the space of a year. She was in her oldest job of the two for over 2 years before the company, a local independent, shut down in August 2008. She found employment after a tough few months looking, with zero benefit from the Government may I add, in November 2008 only for the role to be terminated due to cost cutting in April 2009.

The job she's in now is with the biggest television firm in the UK, and she's loving it ... and thankfully, this company are never going to go bust.

It's not been an easy time, but as Metallica say, "What don't kill ya makes ya more strong".

Amazon

I'll just find a store then... Probably will be sold out though. Why hasn't Apple let us preorder yet?

Yeah, that's true.

And you've also got to ask, who is tight enough to download a torrent for a piece of software worth $29/£20?

I mean, if you can afford the Macintosh hardware then surely you can afford the measly $29/£20 for a disc.

The UK version of the up-to-date program is a bit confusing to me and I'm having doubts that I'll get the upgrade DVD which I paid for on launch-day. For some reason I don't trust it...

So in cases like this, it'd be great to have a nice .dmg package ready to be installed in case my suspicions come true!

Precisely why I have never torrented a copy of OS X. The price (even the $129) is plenty reasonable in my mind, and I will gladly pay for such well made software.

Windows on the other hand... lets just say that I need to have it for school, and the price simply is not right :p (and before we get into an argument over the right/wrong of torrenting, I will just say that I know that torrenting is wrong. but I don't care. there. done.)

For school Windows is dirt cheap. I paid $10 for XP Professional and $8 for Office. Vista is around $40 I think...but I never bought it so I don't really know.

Leopard was around $80 for students if I remember correctly. I bought the family pack though...either way its not the OS's that I have problems with buying, its the other software I run that costs too much, student prices are still relatively cheap. But otherwise I'd easily be in $50K plus range which would suck...(student prices has me around $500 though)
