Their Mom has promised Cable in their rooms if they meet certain standards-- the rooms are small and full of other stuff. They already have 15-17" VCR/TV sets, but it is mainly a space issue-- a computer, plus a TV takes too much space.

Besides, they can only use one at a time.

This has to be fairly typical???

What do I know, I'm only a grandpa!

Sounds reasonable to me. Homes in urban areas are getting smaller. Also parents want more "space" for themselves. Unlike when I was growing up and we had only one TV and we watched as a family (oh the horror!). The first TV I owned as a "kid" was a 9 or 12" bought a Monkey Wards on my employee discount, with my own paycheck. Telephones? We had only one line in!

Times, they are a changing. Don't know if it is good or bad yet myself. I still remember "game nights". Where we would play some board game, generally our choosing.

Godwin's law?
Godwin is a journalist (I don't remember his first name at the moment... you can look it up if you want to) who came up with a law, appropriately called "Godwin's Law", which he disseminated on the Internet in an attempt to judge how well that medium conveyed memes, viral ideas. Essentially, Godwin's Law states:

The usefulness of any online discussion reaches zero as soon as Hitler or Nazis are mentioned.
He put it out there in a few newsgroups, and waited to see what would happen. His "Law" spread very quickly, and soon there were even corollaries to it (for example, "In any online discussion that continues long enough, the probability of Hitler or Nazis being mentioned is 100%.").

Wow. And it's only been day 2. Japanese price style and small, so I have no doubt Mac mini will kick ass in Japan. Apple needs a Mac hit in Japan.

Apple missed a trick not including a second ethernet port.

If it had a 2nd ethernet port I'd have brought a copy of OS X server as well and used the Mac mini as my home server.

Good sugestion both a computer and a server :p but then it would have looked more like the Xserve i think

The biggest shortcoming on the Mac mini is the use of a 2.5" laptop drive, and 1 RAM slot.

You have a point, since its a desktop however using notebook internals. There is no need to put notebook parts unless you are running off a battery.

If they made it flat and used desktop internals it would have been way cheaper. <-- then people will call it a screen-less tablet. we cannot have that. :p :)

I do not think the style would have been compromized by a marginally larger case in order to accomodate a cheaper 7200 rpm drive. Will 4200 rpm be enough for video capturing? I have tested capturing from my Sony DV to an external USB2 HD on a G4 867 Mh and the bus is just not fast enough.

I wanna buy this thing for editing my movies. I understand th iMac would be better suited but I fret "all-in-one" designs ever since I watched one of those megabucks Apple screens die...Yes, there was Apple care but it took them 7 weeks to replace the screen...

Mind you: it did die beautifully though!

USB2 is not reliable for video capture. You need Firewire because the protocol is more robust and supports a sustained critical data rate. 4200 rpm is fast enough to capture DV25 video.

I had the Sony hooked up to the Firewire and since the mini only has one firewire port, the USB2 would be the logic alternative.

In truth, I did also try using the second firewire port but that was even worse as both devices are sharing the same controller

I had no problem capturing video with Sony DV in FW port and with an external HD in another FW port of the same channel, on my G4 867Mhz. You have to make sure your Firewire HD supports the Oxford 911 chipset.

If you are capturing in FCP, there are some settings for how FCP interacts with certain Sony DV playback devices.

The mini doesnt appear suitable for video capture, unless you capture to the internal HD, and then move the video files off to an external HD afterwards.

Sure the box has an Oxford 911 chipset. Actually, the internal HDs in the Slowsilver are more than large enough to handle all my digital needs. I only tried to see if it would work with the Mini since the specs are not that different and, with an 80 Gb drive, working on multiple movie projects is not really an option.

It does seem that DV streams will have to be captured on the internal drive first...I can already hear it spinning!

It may be Murphy's Law that would cover this. I'm currently listening and watching the Keynote address MWSF. Steve keeps saying that products are released a week from Friday January 22nd. Actually January 22nd is on Saturday.

Right Computer 4 the job.

You're asking the wrong question. If this is your intent you should be asking if the mini is the right computer 4 u. Seems like an iMac or G5 would better meet your needs - or your gonna need to get a firewire hub!! But adding all the things u need is gonna get you to the price point of an iMac or G5 1.8. The mini is targeted at the most basic user.

You've got a couple USB ports there. Why not use those?

Say wha...?

While, the Mac mini would make a decent print or file server (w/external drives) as a cheap second/third machine for some people, it is obviously designed in marketed for novices/switchers. Putting in dual NICs would be a waste because 99% of those who purchase thsi machine would never use both. Just buy an external NIC and you're good to go.

Agreed

While, I completely agree with you, I understand why Apple did it. They compromised the RAM slots and HD speed to get the smallest form-factor possible. I'm sure they weighed the options and decided having a tiny box was more important to their target audience. I can't disagree. Most people buying these things aren't going to know anything about RAM slots or the RPM ratings. They just want a cheap, functional machine... and with the Mac mini they get a small, cute form-factor and a cheap alternative to clunky entry-level Wintel boxes.

For more advanced users who care about the specs, the single RAM slot and lower-speed HD are disappointing, but still functional.

They could have added 3.5" HDs and room for an extra RAM slot for probably less money, but that would mean it takes away sales from their emac and imac lines. I'm bound to think they did this for looks and to cripple the machine in regards to an upgrade path.

Mac mini Superdrive

The Mac mini super drive has more capability than the iMac G5---

I wonder why?

Here's the iMac G5

SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed

Here's the Mac mini

Optional SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW discs at up to 2x speed, writes DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD+RW discs at up to 2.4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed

kid you are truly a sleeper. i have some advice for you. start your own company and run it how you want. to use such harsh words on a man that has done nothing but go after HIS dream (not yours, get it?) and attack him by saying he caused his illness and if he would just listen to you all would be well with the universe including his health?....

sorry im sure your normally a well adjusted person but your post was really thoughtless.
