Thanks... I had planned on going to the 512. I use a cable modem & the bandwidth is pretty high so I don't think I would need the Safari Speed Enhancer. Is the speed enhancer for people on dial-up?

No. It is just a hack that lowers or eliminates the page rendering delay. It has made a difference for me.

I'm guessing here, but what I think will happen is that you will love OS X, but find the mini not powerful enough for your needs - it is a consumer machine after all.

But relax.. second hand Apple machines tend to fetch really good prices, so you could flip it and buy a G5. ;)

Good luck in whatever choice you make. :)

I'm very dissapointed. I know it's cheap but come on Apple, when are you finally going to include a megaphone as standard? This is getting ridiculous.

"Keyboard, mouse, megaphone and display sold separately."

THis thing is does not neccessarily have to come with a keyboard and mouse, its designed to replace all those virus ridden, spyware packin crappy lookin dell boxes that are in WAY too many homes in around the world. Apple expects that most people will have some peripherals.

Apple never quite gets it.
They put a notebook drive in this thing and wasted about $60 and slowed it down. This could have been a $439 and faster computer.
And all because Steve has to have 'son of cube', no doubt.

I dont want to be negative, but this is NOT a home run iCheap.

Forget the ******** tiny thing, just stick a processor and a 3.5" drive and 512 ram in a metal box and sell it for $399.
THAT would get some market share.

This will show once again that Apple like to make cute little boxes.

In fact make it in bare metal and offer a paint kit with it. I mean do something different.

Apple. YOU DONT NEED EVERYTHING TO LOOK LIKE A BLOODY IPOD/CUBE THINGY, FOR GODS SAKE.

Steve Jobs obsessions and control freak attitudes have already nearly killed him with his recent illness - I wish for his sake he would learn to delegate........maybe he should just take a sabbatical and let someone else have a turn at the wheel.
I dont wish to sound as if I dont like Steve - I do.
I actually worry about the guy. He needs a change - couldnt you see it at the Expo? He was not his old self.

The mini is an iBook innards, cut down and chucked in a box.
I was hoping for something like an LC.

You have a point, since its a desktop however using notebook internals. There is no need to put notebook parts unless you are running off a battery.

If they made it flat and used desktop internals it would have been way cheaper. <-- then people will call it a screen-less tablet. we cannot have that. :p :)

Didn't get much work done today but did my duty as a Mac faithful.

Me too! Today was busy as heck for me, but I purchased two of the 1.25GHz Mac Minis for our nonprofit. Just upped the RAM to 512MB, but otherwise took the standard package for the $499 model. We've been running on these archaic G3/233 iMacs, so the Mac Minis will be a welcome addition to the office for me (of course) and another employee.

Though I will say I hope the Mac Mini serves us as long and as faithfully as the iMacs we're still using.

Personally, I'm going to wait 'till WWDC to see if there will be a Rev. 2 Mac Mini this year (which will also hopefully come with Tiger), but I'm starting to save my pennies for it now.

Ya' know, we are sitting here with an original Blueberry and a snow iMac. I can't justify keeping them.

Can they be recycled to charity, schools, etc.--- or would they be better server with Mac minis too?

Donate the computers to a school or organization and ask for a donation receipt.

I know many States and Countries have this in place. Call your local gov't agency and surrounding schools for details. :)

Need some input here:

I want to put together a Mac mini systems for each my grandkids (4, 6, 8)

They will be used primarily:

1) learning device / educational games
2) computer for homework
3) watch DVDs
4) Surf web & eMail (when Tiger is available)

I will buy 512 Meg, BT & Airport & Apple mouse & KB (already have Macs at home & in schools)

I'd like to get recommendations on good, sturdy, quality, inexpensive 15" or 17" displays that work with the Mac mini (sturdyness & quality is more important than price)

Also I would like recommendations how I can use a Mac to copy their existing library of purchased VHS tapes to DVD... so we can trash all the tapes & use DVDs in stead to reduce storage space (a real premium)

Finally, I think I will build a little shelf to contain everything (including their DVD library) & mount the whole thing to the wall (just the computer stuff, not the grand kid... although...)

Dick

OK!

Revised system reqts for the grandkids--

has tp be at least a 17" TV capacility Plus: the above!

Do you REALLY need the TV capabilities ? This dramatically increases the cost. I have not really seen a high quality dispaly with TV Tuner or RCA/S-Video.

I personally have a 19" Dell LCD (Equivalent of a Samsung 191T). I am very happy with the monitor and would purchase another in a heartbeat.

I'm the VP of Sales and Marketing for my companies web division. Sigh, we are PC based but I made them buy an eMac for testing our web sites on Mac browsers. Decided to have it moved from an empty cubicle in the IT dept. to an empty cubicle just outside my office. I plan to have my asst. and me use Pages for some quick and dirty PDFs.

They moved it over and I spent a while installing Panther, Office and a ton of Software Updates. At least 15 people stopped and starting asking about Macs. All loved how nice it looked and most had incorrect information about what it could do. Gave a lot of demos that all ended at apple.com showing them the mini. 3 people ordered them today (helped them configure them) and I think 4 others are a sure bet. Didn't get much work done today but did my duty as a Mac faithful.

There seemed to be an underlying theme to all the onlookers- misinformation about Macs. Most were astonished to see Office running and even more astonished to see some company wide spreadsheets on screen.

I work in a retail shop for photo gear. And computers comes up regularly. And for the first time today, people were actually open to hear about Macs because of the Mac mini. Even Mac users that don't haunt places like MR were surprised about the better features of iLife 5 for the "serious" photographer.

Now if only Apple didn't rely on word of mouth so much. :D

Their Mom has promised Cable in their rooms if they meet certain standards-- the rooms are small and full of other stuff. They already have 15-17" VCR/TV sets, but it is mainly a space issue-- a computer, plus a TV takes too much space.

Besides, they can only use one at a time.

This has to be fairly typical???

What do I know, I'm only a grandpa!

You will be pleasantly surprised, and you'll later wonder why you didnt go mac earlier. Like the saying goes, "Once you try Mac, you never go back."

LOL, so true. Even you did what I did and leave Mac for a while. Now I realize how much money I have wasted on Win boxes over the years since my old G3 desktop with PCI slots.

Now that I am back, I will NOT go back! :)

It's legal to make a copy for personal use, it's illegal to distribute it. They might have copy protection if they are newer tapes, I'm not sure how you would get around it.

I have a Canon MiniDV ZR40 and it works great although it takes a couple of steps to make it happen. Hook the camera up to the VCR, start recording then transfer the data to your Mac via firewire, use iMovie and iDVD and voila! A copy for personal use. Most Mini DV cams are capable of this. There are VHS/Digital bridges available as well and work the same way.

Not fully sure about current generation MiniDV camcorders, but the Canon entry level units to my knowledge always allowed for "back and forth" recording" from the input jacks. Go Canon! :D

I am not so sure about that. I had a Pentium 4 machine, and it is marginally faster than my eMac (last revision). The PB rev. B 12" is a little slower than that, but not having XP crash, and having to do at least quarterly reinstalls on the Win box, makes the time spent on the Mac much nicer.

Apple is now know for their intelligent and consumer driven design. You can not think for one minute that Apple and Jobs did not consider the 3.5" drive as a possibility. It just did not fit in to what they felt the customer wanted.

As much as Jobs is a control freak, it is evident that he is listening to the marketing people. And even one is very happy. Look at the things that Jobs said could/would not be possible. They have happened.

So cancer is fully caused by stress then? Damn all those research $ spent, when you had the answer all the long.

The tail of the tape is the answer. The investors willl Apple when Steve needs a rest. So far things have been going pretty well over the past year.
