I know. I've been in both the A-class and Taxis in Germany many of times. The A-class is no Neon. The Neon's gotten better, but please. Anyway the point is, is that Apple won't make a plain basic absolutely no frills PC Box.

I hope Apple doesn't make a no-frills box...thinking the mini is as close as it gets.

Oh, and actually, Mercedes does make the Neon. Since they own Chrysler... ;)

Actually, they don't, Chrysler owns Mercedes.

Umm, no. It was supposed to be a merger of equals when it happened. But what actually happened is that most of Chrysler senior management(including the president and board chairman) was replaced by Mercedes people. It is effectively now run by Mercedes. This has been well documented.

Need some input here:

I want to put together a Mac mini systems for each my grandkids (4, 6, 8)

They will be used primarily:

1) learning device / educational games
2) computer for homework
3) watch DVDs
4) Surf web & eMail (when Tiger is available)

I will buy 512 Meg, BT & Airport & Apple mouse & KB (already have Macs at home & in schools)

I'd like to get recommendations on good, sturdy, quality, inexpensive 15" or 17" displays that work with the Mac mini (sturdyness & quality is more important than price)

Also I would like recommendations how I can use a Mac to copy their existing library of purchased VHS tapes to DVD... so we can trash all the tapes & use DVDs in stead to reduce storage space (a real premium)

Finally, I think I will build a little shelf to contain everything (including their DVD library) & mount the whole thing to the wall (just the computer stuff, not the grand kid... although...)

You're defenately wrong. Mercedes-Benz bought Chrysler Corporation, forming DaimlerChrysler. America doesn't own everything my friend ;)

I've seen some 17" Apple Cinema Displays listed on Ebay. I think any LCD will do, and the prices are competitive so it's not hard to find a quality LCD.

As for turning VHS to DVD, you'll need a DV converter. Something like a Canopus ADC10 will do nicely. If you have a DV camcorder, some models allow you to route an analog signal passthru to the computer for capture.

Check out MacMall. They have some nice promotions with the Mac mini. Free keyboard and mouse and some lcd screens 17 and 19" some 15". :)

Thanks Maya

Can you legally and technically copy purchased VHS Movies?

Isn't there some kind of copy protection on these VHS tapes?

Will this Canopus (what a name) device copy protected tapes?

I don't want to rip anyone off -- I just want to get rid of all the clutter in the family room and the kids' bed rooms. They have purchased about 100 of these VHS tapes & they are all over the place?

I must have sold 7 minis today

I'm the VP of Sales and Marketing for my companies web division. Sigh, we are PC based but I made them buy an eMac for testing our web sites on Mac browsers. Decided to have it moved from an empty cubicle in the IT dept. to an empty cubicle just outside my office. I plan to have my asst. and me use Pages for some quick and dirty PDFs.

They moved it over and I spent a while installing Panther, Office and a ton of Software Updates. At least 15 people stopped and starting asking about Macs. All loved how nice it looked and most had incorrect information about what it could do. Gave a lot of demos that all ended at apple.com showing them the mini. 3 people ordered them today (helped them configure them) and I think 4 others are a sure bet. Didn't get much work done today but did my duty as a Mac faithful.

There seemed to be an underlying theme to all the onlookers- misinformation about Macs. Most were astonished to see Office running and even more astonished to see some company wide spreadsheets on screen.

Question?

I’m thinking of getting a mac mini. Currently I know nothing about Apple computers. I assembled my own windows pc because I want the full version of window XP so I don't have to deal with 3rd party software from pre-manufactured pc’s that you buy at Best Buy or Dell.

When you buy Apple I know you get 3rd party software such as Quicken & MS Office tryout. Does Apple give you a clean version of Panther or is it a quick restore disc that puts the OS & the 3rd party SW back on like you received it when it was new?

When you first start up your Mac, it has "factory" installed software. Included in the Mac box you get a Mac OS X installed CD and you have the option to install what programs you want by doing a "clean install".

Clean install will erase the HDD, and from there load up the Mac OS X CD that comes in the box and select what you want and you are good to go from there. :)

You will be pleasantly surprised, and you'll later wonder why you didnt go mac earlier. Like the saying goes, "Once you try Mac, you never go back."

Yes I am pretty excited to try one out, I currently use iTunes & think it is great & I'm sure the rest of the apps are great to. I just hope it will be fast & run everything with ease. I'm a little concerned with the slow speed of the processor & bus speed only because I am used to my P4 2.8 GHz, 533MHz bus & 1G RAM, so looking at the mac mini seems like it would be slow pc. I know it’s a totally different hardware & software so its not the same comparison.

I'm sure it will be fine.....

The 1.42Ghz will be considerably slower than your P4-B (533FSB). If you don't do gaming, and stick to native Apple apps or Adobe apps, you should do just fine.

You really should upgrade the RAM to 512. Otherwise, it will be fine for normal use. You will probably find it weird at first if you haven't used OS X much before. There's all sorts of cool tricks to learn. Try the macosxhints page for a start.

Do install Safari Speed Enhancer though (if you plan to use Safari).

Thanks... I had planned on going to the 512. I use a cable modem & the bandwidth is pretty high so I don't think I would need the Safari Speed Enhancer. Is the speed enhancer for people on dial-up?

Not really the Safari for G4 chips is just taking advantage of all that the G4 chip can offer.

There is also one for the G5. :)

It loads a bit faster, nothing really hugh IMHO. :)

OMFG

We're way off topis, but I can't resist...

Actually you're all wrong. DaimlerBenz, of which Mercedes-Benz was a subsidiary, "merged" with Chrysler. Personally, it was a travesty to have the inventor of the automobile to have his named replaced with "Chrysler" (even if he was a German-American).

Anyway the mac mini is more than a bargain PC!

It's legal to make a copy for personal use, it's illegal to distribute it. They might have copy protection if they are newer tapes, I'm not sure how you would get around it.

I have a Canon MiniDV ZR40 and it works great although it takes a couple of steps to make it happen. Hook the camera up to the VCR, start recording then transfer the data to your Mac via firewire, use iMovie and iDVD and voila! A copy for personal use. Most Mini DV cams are capable of this. There are VHS/Digital bridges available as well and work the same way.

Mac mini can be used as the following:

WiFi and BT HUB, router, server.

Media Station to watch DVD, create DVD, edit DVD, watch TV (via Elgato), PVR (via Elgato).

Surf with BT keyboard and mouse.

Am I missing anything. :)

Jukebox for your car.
