I like the Power PC architecture and Altivec and the rest, but it looks like that is a dead end with Apple now. As a result I've pretty well decided to go to the open firmware PPC computer by Genesi.

The PegasosPPC has the same chip as a Mac Mini (Freescale 7447), 512 MB Ram and a dual layer DVD burner for $799 US. Runs user friendly, Linux based, Ubuntu as the OS. Comes with OpenOffice and Firefox so you can have a productive, Microsoft Free box. Best of all they are releasing iminantly (Freescale Devleoper's Convention later in June?) a DUAL Processor version that will use the Freescale 7448 chip! And you can upgrade the chipset later.
I love the Mac Mini, the form factor is fantastic, but Apple doesn't seem to care. Why should I?

Well, eMac is close to PB, but it just lacks the portability. Why are people buying a G4 based computer for more than iMac G5?Maxiseller said:I'm really not sure that a Mac Mini update is in the works.
Dont forget, it's not that Apple can't push out better systems, its the fact that they wouldn't fit into the current lineup. The powerbook as it stands certainly isn't "up to date" in terms of technology - and upgrading a Mac Mini would push it dangerously close to being in the same league of processing power as the Powerbook. Obviously this cannot happen.

shadowmoses said:Possible an update next tuesday or friday. with the following specs:
-slight bump in processor speeds
-64m VRAM
-512mb
-60gb HD on low end 80 or 100gb on high end
-Stick with combo drive (superdrive will be extra)
-Maybe slight change of motherboard with 2 RAM slots and more USB 2.0 ports
-Also hopefully they will make the Mini easier to open up and therefore more user upgradeable.
If a Mac mini like that was released for the same or lower price than the curent model i would RUN to Apple Store regents street to buy one!!!

shadowmoses said:Yes but custom build it in any way and the shipping time increases to 6-8 days....Even adding RAM puts it upto 6-8 days. There are shipping delays on mini's WORLDWIDE!!!
