I was thinking about that... That would be hilarious. In reality, if they were to redesign it, it would probably be a small cylinder, but it wouldn't make sense to redesign it and lose the stacking/stand capability that the current shape gives.
I think this is more for media types who need a device that runs OS X integrated, as shown in the picture. Not for actual rack servers.
The Mini has advanced rapidly in the last couple of years. Haswell should make for an amazing upgrade. I'm just hoping Apple has the wisdom to redesign the machine around SSD blades like the rest of the lineup.
Sorry, I just can't take a "Mac Mini" "server" seriously.
Outside of a home or small business environment, hot swapping would be a joke (maybe this is why the developer portal is still down, all those Mini's need replacing lol j/k). Sonnet has a RackMac Mini Server "Enclosure", but for the price and trouble you're better off getting an actual server.
I love my 2011 middle range Mac mini![]()
Maybe the new Mac mini will be a shiny black donut.
To match the new Mac Pro.![]()
Not thin enough. Think 45 rpm record.
Retail stores must be clearing out Apple computers across the board for a major refresh before back to school... BestBuy has the 15" MBPr i7 for $1249 (regular price of $2099!) BestBuy Link
What kind of Haswell CPU will they put in the mini? Didn't the MacBook air only got modest performance improvements? (But great improvements in battery life, which doesn't mean much for a Mac mini).
There's always something more powerful lurking around the corner. The 2012 Mac mini is powerful enough for me, I don't edit HD video or play cutting edge 3d games. It almost feels like an overkill to me.
My 2007 Mac mini was almost good enough for me, except that it couldn't play 1080p video without stuttering, and could not run Mountain Lion (required for Xcode 5 for iOS 7 development).
I could've gotten an older model (2010-2011) and be happy with it, but they're not much cheaper so I got a brand new one.
WOW, that price is unreal!
Apple's margin's are down, so I wouldn't expect to see a price reduction. On the other hand, if the new Mini will continue to have user-installable memory, then the base will probably stay 4GB, representing a cost reduction for Apple. Also, dropping the FireWire port will represent another cost reduction for Apple.Lower the price!!
SSD will be an option. Why don't replace internal HDD by PCI-E SSD so Mac mini can make further smaller?
Probably Mountain Lion. Will this ship with Mountain Lion or Mavericks? Whats your bet?
There is no such thing. All Haswell chips with HD 5000 graphics are dual-core. All of the shipping quad-core Haswell chips have HD 4600 graphics. All of the announced (but not yet shipping) quad-core Haswell chips will have Iris Pro 5200 graphics, plus 128MB of L4 cache, and prices that probably put them outside the Mac Mini's range.Quad Core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 5000

The improvements in battery life are directly related to power consumption, which is key for heat dissipation. So Haswell might mean a lot for a mini in terms of thermal budget. Having less heat dissipation from the CPU (and integrated GPU) could allow for more powerful components and/or more silent operation under certain load scenarios. What kind of Haswell CPU will they put in the mini? Welcome, iTire! How cool would it be if it was something like the mockup I've put together?![]()
