I was thinking about that... That would be hilarious. In reality, if they were to redesign it, it would probably be a small cylinder, but it wouldn't make sense to redesign it and lose the stacking/stand capability that the current shape gives.

Or a true "hockey puck" form factor. But shiny black aluminum!

Sales continue to fall for the Mac Mini and it's not hard to figure out one reason: Lack of options, particularly a GPGPU.

I think this is more for media types who need a device that runs OS X integrated, as shown in the picture. Not for actual rack servers.

Yes, spend $169 for a sheet metal cover that one could make at a local college with a nice finished look.

That Musician/DJ set up is better off using a NAS system with a Macbook Pro.

The Mini has advanced rapidly in the last couple of years. Haswell should make for an amazing upgrade. I'm just hoping Apple has the wisdom to redesign the machine around SSD blades like the rest of the lineup.

What kind of Haswell CPU will they put in the mini? Didn't the MacBook air only got modest performance improvements? (But great improvements in battery life, which doesn't mean much for a Mac mini).

There's always something more powerful lurking around the corner. The 2012 Mac mini is powerful enough for me, I don't edit HD video or play cutting edge 3d games. It almost feels like an overkill to me.

My 2007 Mac mini was almost good enough for me, except that it couldn't play 1080p video without stuttering, and could not run Mountain Lion (required for Xcode 5 for iOS 7 development).

I could've gotten an older model (2010-2011) and be happy with it, but they're not much cheaper so I got a brand new one.

Sorry, I just can't take a "Mac Mini" "server" seriously.

Outside of a home or small business environment, hot swapping would be a joke (maybe this is why the developer portal is still down, all those Mini's need replacing lol j/k). Sonnet has a RackMac Mini Server "Enclosure", but for the price and trouble you're better off getting an actual server.

Hot swapping would be non-existent, don't you mean?

The only real question for me is, can I live with the new form. It's obvious that it'll have the airport form factor. If you are going to update the board for a new processor architecture and Ssd chip drive, then you're going to change the form since you are no longer chained to fitting in the legacy cd/dvd drive. Technologically, of course it will be a MacBook Air in a cube. But can they shrink that hideous 3.8 x 6.6 thing down to perhaps half the height? I doubt it, so I just have to hope it'll be black. And I'd say odds are at least 50/50 that it will be.

Maybe the new Mac mini will be a shiny black donut.
To match the new Mac Pro. :)

Dude, you may not be as far from what they have planned. The Mac Mini has kept this rounded corner square form for over five years now. I can easily see a new design in place. Last round the CD player became an option.

My guess on this is we'll see a longer and shorter mini while keeping the same width. Updated expansion is a quad core processor, two HDMI ports with front and back USB 3.0 ports.

Apple Give mini a Dedicated GPU
remember rMBP 13" ( don't bcz of no dedicated GPU) wonder why sales are not great.

The biggest improvement will most likely be graphics instead of CPU power. Using less power is never a bad thing, especially with cooling considerations. I'm in the same boat where my 2012 is awesome. I won't be getting a 2013 but it will be interesting to see where they take the mini in the future.

looking forward to the refresh. my 2010 Core 2 Duo macbook has been a workhorse ever since I replaced the optical drive with an SSD & maxed out the ram but it's time for an upgrade.

i really, really hope Apple sticks with the previous design of the mini, leaving the RAM to still be user upgradable as well the ability to mount a second hard drive. *crosses fingers*

Lower the price!!
Apple's margin's are down, so I wouldn't expect to see a price reduction. On the other hand, if the new Mini will continue to have user-installable memory, then the base will probably stay 4GB, representing a cost reduction for Apple. Also, dropping the FireWire port will represent another cost reduction for Apple.

Why don't replace internal HDD by PCI-E SSD so Mac mini can make further smaller?
SSD will be an option.

Will this ship with Mountain Lion or Mavericks? Whats your bet?
Probably Mountain Lion.

Quad Core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 5000
There is no such thing. All Haswell chips with HD 5000 graphics are dual-core. All of the shipping quad-core Haswell chips have HD 4600 graphics. All of the announced (but not yet shipping) quad-core Haswell chips will have Iris Pro 5200 graphics, plus 128MB of L4 cache, and prices that probably put them outside the Mac Mini's range.

thanks for the knowledge. wrote that before I browsed the thread and was a bit bummed to hear that. the mini having a quad core with HD 5000 would of been an instant purchase.

dual core w/ hd 5000 vs quad core w/ 4600. what would be more ideal for medium photo/video editing?

would apple be significantly 'gimping' the mini if it chose to go with a quad 4600 over a dual 5000?

i don't want laptop parts in my cheap Desktop (slow drive + ram + graphics etc...)

Please Apple make a cheap mini tower with all desktop class parts and i bet i'll be the first one in the line to buy it.

But if Apple thinks that people buy mini's to save electric bills and environment, how wrong are they.

Apple will have already been manufacturing the new mac mini for some time i think you will find - possibly since April/May or before.

And I was just about to order my Mac Mini today :(
How much time should I wait now? What do you say?

The improvements in battery life are directly related to power consumption, which is key for heat dissipation. So Haswell might mean a lot for a mini in terms of thermal budget. Having less heat dissipation from the CPU (and integrated GPU) could allow for more powerful components and/or more silent operation under certain load scenarios.

How cool would it be if it was something like the mockup I've put together? :D
Welcome, iTire! :p:D
