I have a 2006 Mini that I upgraded to a 2.16ghz Core 2 Duo. I love it, but I'll admit that I have been thinking of upgrading.

They should never have gotten rid of the optical drive. That and add a decent GPU and turn it into a Steam-esque type box. Even i would've jumped on one.

I expect the new Mac mini to take on a form factor similar to the new import Extreme. That is, a mini tower with a rounded square base, perhaps 3.5 x 3.5 inches wide and deep and about 4.5 inches tall, which would fit underneath the TV in normal entertainment centers and with no need for an external power supply. It should come with at least an option for SSD if not SDD only and of course have TB and HDMI ports. I expect Haswell but unfortunately I don't think we will see discrete graphics no matter how much I'd like to see it. Hopefully, the RAM is consumer upgradable but I wouldn't bet on it.

I hope they don't change the Mini design (or at least not too much).
Upgrading the CPU is a given and a discrete graphics option would be nice though I think unlikely.
What I like about the current design is that I can change the hard drive and even add a second, in addition to being able to upgrade the ram on my own.

I would bet for a new Time Capsule like redesign. Smaller form factor, but higher. Time will tell, lets hope soon enough ;)

Oh crap I just bought a Mac mini about a month ago!

But I'm not really complaining, I knew there was a possible refresh soon. It's still way faster than the 2007 CoreDuo2 mini it replaced.

The Mini has advanced rapidly in the last couple of years. Haswell should make for an amazing upgrade. I'm just hoping Apple has the wisdom to redesign the machine around SSD blades like the rest of the lineup.

Aside from improved integrated graphics, what really does Haswell offer over the current Ivy Bridge chips inside?

AFAIK, Haswell is mainly only a boon to efficiency and battery life; it was created from the ground up to really be a mobile chip, instead of underclocking desktop chips for mobiles.

Personally, I would see the 'upgrade' to Haswell as a very boring one on a desktop machine, but to each their own.

I can dare to dream, though. I have the 2011 with the 6630m and I love it, but a bump to a quad CPU would be nice.
Add a dedicated GPU and bam, near perfect machine (for me at least).

The problem there is any quad worth having won't allow for a GPU in the power budget. I'm with you on quads but they will likely have integrated graphics and more so lower end integrated graphics. For my work Quads would do more for me than the GPU except that I need OpenCL support. I really wish Apple and Intel would get on the ball with OpenCL.

Either way they need to implement a good SSD solution just like they do in the AIRs. An SSD would make a huge difference no matter the processor.

I can't think of any reason why Apple will make a "tall" mini unless it has something to do with antennas. Really doubt it, though.

Sure, but they can't all be exciting. Some cycles are just speed bumps, nothing more. That's probably what this one is. Great if you delayed your purchase a couple months but no big deal if you didn't.

The 2012 Mac Mini is a BEAST!!!! I love mine! :)

BestBuy Macbook Pro Retina for $1259

Retail stores must be clearing out Apple computers across the board for a major refresh before back to school... BestBuy has the 15" MBPr i7 for $1249 (regular price of $2099!) BestBuy Link

Don't even make jokes about this...

Why? It is a good design for the Mini, compact and they could effectively turn it into a Mini Mac Pro. The design would give them room for the compute board on one side and the other could be used for a GPU option. I wouldn't knock the idea though I think Apple would milk the current chassis for a bit longer. The fact is the "tower" design would give Apple some serious options.

Give me Haswell Core i7 Quad iMac with HD5000 and standard 256SSD and I'm not waiting for Haswell iMac!

Please for the love of god offer a GPU on the mid range Mini...

Iris would suit this product perfectly.

----------

If they go all Quad, they may have just the 4600...because putting the Iris HD 5200 across would probably be too expensive.

But it's possible. They may do that and offer the HD 5100 Iris dual-core option on the low end.

Don't expect anything dedicated however, those days are over. The 2011 model with the 256mb ATI card was the last one (have one of those actually).

Why on earth would they go for the 4600 and not the 5000 at least?!

I have been looking at the Mac mini for a few months now but I've been holding back for the next update. This would make a nice addition to my setup for going back to college in September! :D

I absolutely agree. Admittingly, after first getting my Airport Time Capsule, I was a little hesitant on the design myself, but it quickly grew on me. I really appreciate the smaller footprint. This makes the Mac mini the oddball of Apple's Airport/Apple TV/Mac mini design theme now as it doesn't match the consistent 3.85" square footprint as the aforementioned products do.

If Apple does decide to assimilate the mini, let's hope they can have a chance to bring back the dedicated GPU that a lot of mini users have been missing.
