Basically, I want a mac midi. I want something with a quad core i7 CPU in a mid-size tower case. I want enough room to put in two normal-size optical drives and at least two hard drives. I want ESATA on the back (don't give a rat's a$$ about Firewire 800), about 8 USB ports, dual DVI ports, and a decent, but not top-of-the-line, 3D video card (that I can upgrade when I'm ready to).

Two optical drives and two hard drives for me too!
Come on Apple. I've got some money to stimulate the economy if you will only build what I want to buy.

Something went wrong.....

I am guessing that their was not a new Mini or new operating system or anything significant for a couple guesses.

Jobs pulled out when the operating system missed going gold last month. Gave the show to Phil to do some other software demo's.

All the new hardware needs a new operating system. Especially the new Mini.

Jobs likes to keep his profile as Megastar at Apple and to have Phil out demo him, would make Jobs look bad.... it is all optics

HP just took some press by announcing some products. The media can only handle so much new stuff and everyone is itching to get the free press on their side.

The CES show is where the action is... Apple will probably be there next year pulling lots of rabbits out of know where.

Apple plays in a big playing field now, and they have to control so much placement information, divulging new products and keeping products hype building....

Somewhere in there is me, looking for tools to make my life easier... MacWorld, Apple World or even NeXT world are long gone memories. Just don't wash those t-shirts they last longer....

This waiting is a sick cycle. I've been waiting for a new Mini for a good 6-9 months. "No, no - just wait a few more weeks/month!" Then that doesn't pan out...but wait, the next big Apple event is in a few weeks. Surely it will be announced then?! Then nothing. Repeat.

<sigh>

My thoughts EXACTLY. Dammit Apple, I need an affordable headless Mac. Both for home and work. I guess I'm not pulling out my credit card yet (seriously).

Product Mac mini
Recommendation: Don't Buy - Updates soon

Just goes to show not a single one of these rumors sites has any credibility at all. Almost two years of lies and rumors and not a single word from Apple about a new Mac Mini how hilarious is this that :D

I could cancel my cable and come here every night for tons of laughs and entertainment.

Did you ever see a single official press release from Apple saying to wait new Mini's will be out soon? who told you a new Mini was coming out?

I damn near piss my pants after laughing so hard today just thinking about all the people who thought a new Mini would be released today.

Who told you a new Mini was coming? :D:)

Jobs pulled out when the operating system missed going gold last month. Gave the show to Phil to do some other software demo's.

10.6 has major new OS development "under the hood." It wasn't going to be ready now, or for months to come, and that has been obvious since it was announced last summer.

All the new hardware needs a new operating system. Especially the new Mini.

No it doesn't. Leopard is a barely mature OS now, with lots of life left.

Jobs likes to keep his profile as Megastar at Apple and to have Phil out demo him, would make Jobs look bad.... it is all optics

It's very clear that Jobs' absence is due to two factors: his health concerns, and Apple's decision to downplay the importance of trade shows, just as they announced.

HP just took some press by announcing some products. The media can only handle so much new stuff and everyone is itching to get the free press on their side.

The CES show is where the action is... Apple will probably be there next year pulling lots of rabbits out of know where.

Makes no sense. Why would Apple plan to make a big splash at another conference instead of the one completely dedicated to themselves with a monopoly of media attention?

Apple plays in a big playing field now, and they have to control so much placement information, divulging new products and keeping products hype building....

And this was their answer - downplaying the hype because they can't live up to it every year like clockwork.

I do like the exaggeration you get on here.

The Mac mini is way overdue an update, but it is 1 year and 5 months since the last upgrade. :p

But all the speculation all over the web almost confirmed it. And If I were to ask what was the best Mac Mini config to get 2 or 3 months ago I would get bombarded with "just wait for the new one at Macworld".

I loved how they included a pic of the Mini in the Mac Product line up.. at least it shows the Mini isn't RIP, otherwise they would have included a Powerbook in there or a Cube.

If they didn't make any major hardware announcements today and are saving them for their own event, just so they can show Macworld where they can stick it and set up a new tradition of announcing products with the Apple marketplace, then fine, i agree with that sentiment completely, but if they don't update the mini soon or release some small form factor of the Mac Pro then they are seriously shooting themselves in the foot. Notebooks aren't the only computing products people buy, otherwise i'm sure Apple would have made a netbook to add to their great line.

I really think Apple are doing a huge mis-service to their potential mac mini customers.. it has been insanely long time since the last update, they should at least call the product dead, or just give some inclination an update is coming, i love how their announcements are kept secret, it adds an air of mystery and hype, but there are some things where a human being can only demonstrate so much patience before turning into a mad ball of rage :)

Mini at Macworld 2009...

So, it was NOT a lock, Apple, did probably what many expected although some of us hoped the opposite. I've put off buying for over two months. My guess is that either it was held up or they are stalling in an attempt to upsell us. I have considered an iMac but, I really am not sure about the 20" model's screen. I'd like a 24" but I'd have to wait at least another year to buy. The eMac is getting pretty long on the tooth, CS3 is just positively, poky. It's a good thing that my photo business is a bit slow, I'd have some unhappy customers otherwise.

- I'd like a 24" iMac, but I can't afford it right now - it'd be another year of saving.
- A MacPro - If I stopped eating for six months, I could probably get one, but then I'd still have to get a monitor, another three months of not eating.
- The current Mini is adequate, but not ideal and they will upgrade it as soon as I buy.
- The 20" iMac's screen does not support 16.7 million colors, not great for photography, although I could add another monitor when cash is available. Any opinions out there?

I added the original formatting to make it extra clear.

No, Apple doesn't publish product roadmaps, so the guessing game is left to the rumor mill and the like. There was a reasonable guess that updated Mac minis were ready to roll out. Laugh all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a pent-up demand for something new on the Mac mini front.

when IS the next major Apple event?

I mean, they better show some love to their desktop systems.
iMacs and the Mac Mini are desperate for an upgrade.
as it is, the new HP and Dell AIO's are slightly cheaper AND more powerful.

IMO today's non-event is specifically related to their pullout of Macworld completely. As has been said before, Apple likes to be in control of everything related to their products and have decided from now on that anything of any major importance will come directly from them in one of their own events. It was too late to pull out this year, plus Jobs knew he was too sick to be put on stage, so he/they decided to just make some minor announcements. I have all ideas that we'll see a special Apple event in a month or so with all kinds of more major announcements including new iMacs and a new mini.

That is based off of rumors and it's overdue refresh.
It can still be correct and should be stayed on until a new mini is released.
Who knows, this week, next month, April (more likely) are all possibilities

This is a serious PI my A. I have my MBP but I've been holding off buying the kids/wife an iMac or Mini since before xmas and now I might have to wait until April?

F that. - It's not as if I'm talking about a replacement system either.

The $$ are saved, the desk is cluttered but available and my whole ATV/backup strategy is contingent on being able to get this damn relic of an XP workstation that superheats my office whenever I fire it up into a cupboard downstairs.

My thoughts EXACTLY. Dammit Apple, I need an affordable headless Mac. Both for home and work. I guess I'm not pulling out my credit card yet (seriously).

Well, I am tired of waiting.

Look at this (customized from their website)
Dell Studio Hybrid:
Core 2 duo 2Ghz,
2gb,
160 gb HD
Wireless N,
wireless keyboard+mouse
=
635 CDN.

The current rock bottom Mini:
1.8 core 2 duo
1 gb
80 gb hd
wireless, no keyboard
=
645 CDN

Just take the dell (it looks as nice as the mini, if not more), siphon Vista and install kubuntu!

Or hack-intosh it.

About a month ago I bought a used dual processor G4 tower with two 80 gig HDDs, Leopard installed and maxed out RAM (2 gig). I paid $225. An extra $20 bought me a PCI card with 4 USB 2.0 ports and another $50, an external DVD writer. So combined, I paid $295 for the computer. I was planning on using it temporarily and replacing it with the new Mac Mini I was so sure was right down the pike. Now that it looks like there will not be a new Mac Mini....I'm really glad I bought the G4, which looks like a real bargain, especially since it performs nearly as well as the current Mini. The only problem is the NOISE, the NOISE....but I can deal with it.

I may end up with this as my HTPC..

I am actually considering entering the dark side I can't take it anymore!

Click on the link below then scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the post I made back on Nov. 29th of last year.

Mock my words all of you! if and when a new Mini ever comes out you better get ready to bend over when they reveal the price! good luck guys.

** Remember there is no recession at Apple so you can forget about all that economy stuff.

That 'upgrade' was the slightest one you could imagine...a minor processor bump.

The upgrade before that was another year earlier...so practically it has been 2 and a half years since the last mini bump

I can't afford to wait any longer...I'll buy either an old 2.66GHz Mac Pro, or build a hackintosh in the next month.

Apple wanted to demo the new graphics engine which now uses the gpu instead of the cpu.

No it doesn't. Leopard is a barely mature OS now, with lots of life left.

Actually the os is bsd has been since NeXtStep days..... they just add new frameworks, kernel adjustments and an interface. This is how they are able to sell the os as being mature.

It's very clear that Jobs' absence is due to two factors: his health concerns, and Apple's decision to downplay the importance of trade shows, just as they announced.

Very clear as in what they want the investors to know. You have to read between the lines. Jobs initially said his health was none of any ones business. If it was not for the investors the general public would have never known. Furthermore, investors have a legal right to inquire as to the health of a business (Mngt). If something went wrong then Apple could have been liable for a fair chunk of change.

Makes no sense. Why would Apple plan to make a big splash at another conference instead of the one completely dedicated to themselves with a monopoly of media attention?

Well they don't have a monopoly on the media, just look at the news feeds. I asked Apple that question a few years ago when they had a product that allowed the apple binaries to load up in Windows NT. A killer product at the time but they would not release it due to the market ability to retain a message. At that time it was Apple is profitable..... that is all they cared about at the time.

And this was their answer - downplaying the hype because they can't live up to it every year like clockwork.

I am sure you have read past employees experiences of working at Apple. They are the R&D for the computer world. They have lots of things they could release..... but they don't want to do it on someone else schedule or have to deal with the groan and moans of the investors shorting the stock post MacWorld.

The way I see it or another way to look at this is to think about having a party. You get to have all your friends over or you could invite all these people who don't really know you but it would be very good to know. Apple can always go back and book a booth at MacWorld, everyone adores them.

Finally.... it is all about optics and strategic planning, not the mini I want to buy but the positioning of Apple in respect to everything else.

I also think that once Snow Leopard is ready that's when they'll announce the new Mini. I just can't think I can wait that long though, so that Dell link I just saw will do. I'll install Ubuntu or "upgrade" to Win XP.

Similarly, I was also hoping for an unlikely NetBook announcement (an "Air Mini"), but again my dollars will have to go to an eee PC.

Edit: You can't blame them for not "Thinking Different" though. Netbooks are all the craze, so Apple releases a gigantic expensive laptop!?!?
