Well unless something happens later tonight like some are speculating may happen or something happens at Macworld Boston or whatever on the 11th of this month, I'd say September is the soonest we'd see such updates. I'm personally doubting anything happening tonight due to both ibooks and mac minis being listed on apple's site as "same day shipping" but the July 11th still has a little rumor-speculation around it, although to me its feeling less and less likely. I'd put my chips on some kind of big announcement, update, or just something in general in September. I don't know of July's going to provide what everyone (including rumors) have been hoping for, well other then the ipod and ipod photo lines merging to make color 4th gen ipods. If that's all you were hoping for all along, then congratulations! Just my thougts/guess currently...

I placed an order on June 15th for a mini 1.42 with all the fixin's (AP/BT, SuperDrive, 512 ram, 80gig) Canadian Applestore Online.

Original ship date: 6/27
Update on 6/27 said it would ship 7/1
Update on 7/1 said it will ship 7/8

I haven't seen any note on my online order re: substitution, or upgrade.

On one hand I don't mind the delay, as it means my Visa won't get charged for a short time still... on the other hand, if they are announcing an update - I want the new version! They say that since it's been "Sent to Manufacturing" that I cannot cancel or change the order.

I just want my new mini! :(

Update on 7/7:
For some reason my mini order showed as cancelled today, with an identical reorder under the same web order number... new ship date now says on or before 7/12

...sigh :(

You are my ray of hope then. I became depressed when someone pointed out that updates were unlikely as long as the free iPod with purchase was going on... I decided to go have a look... lo and behold... the mac mini isn't one of them! This is great news. If I'm not mistaken, this means the mini might really be eligible for an update!
p.s. It dawned on me yesterday that when they do update the mini, it will be a quiet update on the Apple site. Less upsetting to the new users. Everyone else will make a big deal about it anyway though.

my order

I live in australia. I made a custom order for a mac mini on the 5th.

I was told later by my Japanese friend that the mini is likely to be updated on the 11th.

Im starting to freak because my expected ship date is the 11th or 12th.
would apple australia have the new models?

I swear if I get sent a outdated model Im going to be pissed!! I sold my iMac on ebay for this!!!

First it said processing order. now its been sent to manufacturing.

I got a 1.25 with superdrive. bluetooth and 512mb RAM.

I sent a email to apples "update protection" service.

what do you guys think?
Im itching to cancel right now. since they dont offer refunds for custom built products ( which technically is illegal, as all stores must offer 7 days return policy for any product )

Its a tough call. There have been so many expectations about new products to be released in the last few months and little has happened. Think Secert (a very reliable rumor site) say no mini updates are expected anytime soon, but they have been wrong before...

how long to wait?

I think i will wait until the 12th (When we might see an update) and then will purchase. I would like to hear what everyone's take is on that. Is it a safe bet?

That's pretty much what the wife and I are doing. Wait until mid month and if there's no mini update, we'll buy one. We've already waited months. She does a lot of graphics work so we'd really really like ot see a gfx card update.

Yeah $543 difference is a lot, but getting 80gb extra HDD space, the G5, a 17" monitor, the ability to go to at least 2gb RAM, a 128mb VRAM card - all make the Mac mini less appealing IMO. I have lusted for a Mac mini. But in the end I sprang for the 20" iMac G5. Glad I did.

I had thoughts of driving my Dell FP2001 on a mini. But with Tiger and 128mb VRAM and the spanning hack - I now have a monitor that supports the portrait mode - and dual displays at that!

If I ever get to do the Home Theater setup that I dream of, the Mac mini will be a part of that I think - if the specs are up to it of course. But as a day to day computer - glad that I waited to do the iMac.

ok if they really were coming out with an updated mini most supliers would not have any in stock.... and i have not found one place that does not have them in stock

Well if it doesn't happen then, then I would say Aug 15 (MacPredict.com) however that happens to fall on a Sunday- Historically not a day updates are announced. If I were to wait till then, then you might as well wait till Aug 17- a tuesday. Everyone knows most Mac updates are released on tuesday. So if you want at least a full week of enjoyment then don't buy on a Sat, Sun, or Monday. It's just bad luck. If it doesn't happen in August then you might want to wait till Sept 20- Apple Expo Paris. However not a lot usually happens there, so if that isn't it, then you should probably wait till after January 9, 2006.

Yep. MacWorld San Francisco. That's the ticket. Any event that Steve Jobs speaks is a date worth waiting for. If he doesn't announce an update to the Mini, then it's probably because he's announcing something even better/cooler/smaller than a mini. But if by some freak accident that doesn't happen, then there's always Jun 2006- The new Intel based mac- whatever/whichever it is. However if the Mini really is the first one to go Intel you've got to remember that will be a rev. A Intel Mac. Always better to wait till revision B....

So to answer your question, the best time to buy is never. Or now. Unless it's Monday. Never buy on a Monday....

So true. Although as of late it's just plain old "whenever" for updates...not Tuesdays like it use to be. I personally think that before fall the mini will be updated. Mostly because I feel that a lot of college students will be looking for an inexpensive computer and macs infiltrate university and college campuses enough that if there was a nice new updated mini it would sell like crazy...at least it would here at UMaine.

nonsense

You're saying:

July 11-14th
or
August 17th
or
September 20th
or
any event SJ speaks at, which leaves Mac Expo Jan 2006

You may as well wait for ever, this sheds no light on any update, you've just quoted ALL the likely dates which ANY Apple product may be updated by not just the mini.

No, the reason why the Mac Mini isn't part of the deal is because it's too cheap to give away iPods (or $179 towards an iPod) with that deal. Just before the free iPod deal came out, the previous deal for students ended ($100 mail-in rebate on any eligible Mac). Just like now, the Mini wasn't eligible (along with the eMac and CD-ROM iBook) because of their low price points.

Well I was being just a tad facetious with a dash of irony thrown in. All this speculating was just driving me to the brink. I couldn't find any ironic emoticons though, so I was hoping you'd pick it up on your own.

If it were possible to create an ironic emoticon, the universe would implode. :)

I think I am going to wait until the end of July and order the Mac Mini the last week of July/the first week of August. You guys think that's a good choice?

Thanks for you input.

As it stands now, it would be best to wait until September. That will be MacWorld Paris, the next time that Steve will do a Keynote. If you are able to wait, I would.

Just curious, of all the updates released this year since the Mini was unveiled (PowerBook in January, LCDs & PowerMacs in April, iMac & eMac in May), which ones were introduced in a Keynote?

I think the only keynotes this year were MWSF 2005 in January and the Developer Conference in June.

At MWSF 2005 keynote we got the introduction of the Mac Mini, the introduction of the iPod shuffle, announcement of iTunes phones from Motorola coming this spring (any day now....), introduction of Pages, and major update to iLife- iLife '05. The Xserve was updated a couple days before MWSF on Jan 4, and the PowerBooks were updated a couple weeks after MWSF on Jan 31.

At the last Apple Expo Paris keynote we got the new G5 iMacs- a pretty significant announcement. And that keynote wasn't even given by Steve!!

This is from a French site/order and in Europe we usually use dd/mm/yy(yy) (or yy(yy)/mm/dd) ;)

I wish everyone would move beyond the old dd/mm/yy versus mm/dd/yy to the much more logical, and less ambiguous yyyy/mm/dd.

So, please, everyone who reads this, start using yyyy/mm/dd from now on.

Exactly. And here we're just talking about an under-the-hood update to an already introduced product.. so why should we expect it to be a big event? The Mini update could just show up in the Apple Store at any random time this summer, based on the precedent set by this year's previous updates.

Unfortunately, I have other reasons for thinking we may have to wait till September -- that way, it would be 8 months between updates, so there won't be any expectation of a "Rev C" before the Macintels come out in June. But the fact that there happens to be a major event that month shouldn't really have any bearing on when the Rev B is released.

Sorry. The proper, ISO-standardized format is YYYY-MM-DD. Dashes, not slashes.
