I wish everyone would move beyond the old dd/mm/yy versus mm/dd/yy to the much more logical, and less ambiguous yyyy/mm/dd.

So, please, everyone who reads this, start using yyyy/mm/dd from now on.

Probably the easier format would be to post the month spelled out such as July, that would be a reference that all of us understand. Then the year and date could be posted in whatever order the poster is conformable.

On any legal document I always write the long format, with the month spelled out, as you suggest. Eg: January 11, 2005

Exactly. And here we're just talking about an under-the-hood update to an already introduced product.. so why should we expect it to be a big event? The Mini update could just show up in the Apple Store at any random time this summer, based on the precedent set by this year's previous updates.

Unfortunately, I have other reasons for thinking we may have to wait till September -- that way, it would be 8 months between updates, so there won't be any expectation of a "Rev C" before the Macintels come out in June. But the fact that there happens to be a major event that month shouldn't really have any bearing on when the Rev B is released.
You're probably right, the keynotes tend to be big introductions or major updates. If the next Mini update is a minor speedbump then they won't wait for a keynote. However if it's a major revamping then we might not see it till January.

I personally think it will be a minor update... hard drive to 100gb, 512Mb RAM, allowing up to 2gb DIMM.... maybe even a video RAM update (not plausible for current users, but a firmware update would be nice here)
.

I don't think the next major update of the mini will be until they make it Mactel.

I tend to agree -- although that doesn't mean the coming speedbump will be a disappointment; minor improvements could make a big difference. Cheaper memory starting at 512MB, 5400 or more RPM standard for the HDDs and doubled VRAM are the big ones for me.

I for one am looking forward to owning a 'last of its kind' PowerPC Mini... assuming the current ones aren't it!

Well tomorrows one of the "big" rumor/speculated days being a 1. Tuesday, and 2. July 12th (ok, so the 11th was the rumored day, but I've read a lot of you saying you'd wait until the 12th before ordering). This being said, this message board may come to a halt after tomorrow if no updates occur. Then again, it may whip back into a frenzy if apple smacks us with a Rev. B Mac Mini. Before either of which happens, I'm just posting to ask that those of you who have been waiting until the 11th/12th of July to post whether or not you actually followed through with ordering a Mini, if you're waiting now until September for the Paris Expo, or if you just couldn't wait any longer and already made the order and/or received your mini. I'm just curious to see what's next on the agenda for you few people who said you would wait until the 11th or 12th of this month before ordering just INCASE there was a update. What's your plan, you glad/mad for waiting, etc.? Just curious, and thanks for your responses *those of you whom respond* - Ryan

Well, I think that whether or not you've waited... tell me, has anyone here ordered a mini and received it in the past month? As I posted earlier... I placed my order on June 15th, and my mini has been in manufacturing since then. I'll hold off until noon today... if there hasn't been an upgrade announcement by then, and my mini still shows as unshipped.... I may just have to cancel the works and start thinkng G5.

mini - 1.42 - 512meg ram - Superdrive - AP/BT.... just how long should one have to wait???

Yep even a minor upgrade would be all I need to buy one. I really want a second Mac, and the Mini is almost perfect. I just need it to be a little more powerful than my 2 1/2 year old 1Ghz G4 80GB iMac. The only thing holding me back from buying one is the so slow 80GB HD. It's just not fast enough for importing and editing my home movies like I can on my iMac. I'd also like to see the VRam bumped to at least 64MB. However if they introduce a 23" G5 iMac first I might just have to go that route.

Whats with the "alarm"? Updates are a good thing. Mini has been out for several months now with no update. And the updates to imacs and emacs haven't been that impressive.

I completely disagree about the eMacs. The jump from a Radeon 9200 to 9600 is very important to me, and I would buy a mini if they were updated the same way.

Waiting................ just waiting

My gut feeling tells me end of August but nevertheless I'll wait it out this week, if only to be running 10.4.2.

I'll place my order online on Friday morning UK time, and unless something happens in the time it takes to arrive then the next stop will be intel, irrespective of any new 'great PPC products' that Apple brings out.

In the whole scheme of things Apple updates are usually minor, so I can't imagine anything amazing happening to the mini anyway - a .1ghz + 512mb ram at the most, 64mb card is optimistic as are faster hard drives.

waiting is almost at an end.

Why is a 64mb card 'optimistic'? They did it for the eMac upgrade, didn't they? And they already use 5400RPM drives in the 40GB model (as opposed to the 4200 in the official specs), so it looks like they're moving in that direction anyway. I would hope that an update would focus on what the customers have been complaining about -- and other than the VGA issues (which I don't know how they'd solve), the main complaints I've heard are video memory and slow HDDs.

I'm going to keep waiting. I don't need one right this second, and at present, the specs just aren't good enough to justify a purchase a couple months before an update. I really doubt they'd avoid updating altogether before Intel -- kind of a strange strategy considering their job for the next 11 months is to convince people to buy products we all know are doomed. Anyway, what we've seen from them all year are minor but decent upgrades combined with price drops. I think we should expect the same from the mini (well, maybe not price drops).

Well every computer is doomed- Just like my 2500.00 Gateway 350Mhz PII. It was Pentium based- didn't keep it from being obsolete in 2 years - (or a piece of junk the day it arrived.) I doubt I could get 50.00 for the whole Windows scrap pile today. And it was state of the art just 6 1/2 years ago. The question you've got to ask is whether the Mini meets your needs right now. For me it doesn't. If they improve the HD speed and the VRam then it will.

Considering the specs on the eMac and the Mini were identical when the Mini came out, I think we'll probably see them bring the Mini more in line with the current eMac- though I don't think we'll see a 160GB HD any time soon- Not too many of those in 2.5" format. :D

Well I meant doomed in the sense that now that people have heard about the Intel transition, some may be intentionally holding off, so Apple needs to give these people a reason to buy. Personally I think it's better to get the PPCs while they last, what with the slowness of Rosetta, the big question mark of what the Intels will be like and the hit-and-miss nature of Rev A hardware, but many of course will not see it that way. If they don't at least have updates in the interim, then their hardware is both outdated AND destined for the chopping block in the near future, which can't be good for sales..

That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.

If there is an update today, at what time is it expected? I saw somewhere that they usually update at 9 AM Pacific Time... can some one tell me how many hours are left before we wait for next tuesday? :p

That deadline has passed.. I'm not getting my hopes up

there is no update in mwb but there may be in paris no one really knows but as for me i don't think i can wait any longer so i am going to order mine by the end of the week

There are Apple Centers and dealers here in India, but i'll be in Singapore in August or September... if there is an update till then, i'll buy it otherwise i'll just buy REV A from Singapore and save lotsa rupees. Although, it is very disappointing that they're not shipping any minis and they aren't even updating it! Come on Steve, atleast a 5200 on a mini?

Spoke with a nice girl on the help line this afternoon... she had no info beyond what the website was already stating... est. ship 7/12...

I pressed about the wait and asked about cancelling my order and she bumped it up to express shipping (if and when it finally ships).

I politely asked if, on the slim chance that I get a delay email instead of a shipping confirmation in the next 24 hours, it would be alright if I cancel my order and start looking at a G5 instead. It sounds like they're willing to work with me if it comes down to that.

Keep on waiting... another 18 hours at least...
:(

My mini is "preparing for shipping", so it has passed manufacturing. It's a standard 1.42GHz with 512Mb. Maybe it's the superdrive or AP/BT that is delayed.

I know this is probably not either the time or place since it is not a rumor or speculation but a future accessory for the mac mini coming out late August, but have any of you seen the new LaCie Mac Mini Firewire or USB hardrives? Similar to those done by micronet and a few other company's although it has a crown to allow ventalation between the top of the harddrive and bottom of the mini. The one thing I can't find or figure out anywhere is whether or not it has a hub-like feature like the micronet version does allowing for USB and/or Firewire devices to be plugged into the external hard drive. If anyone knows and would like to share, it be much appreciated. Thank you as well in advance! - Ryan :)

I can buy the mini today at the Apple Store here in NY or play the waiting game through Apple....BUT the current setup is NOT good enough to buy today or to wait for. The REV B has to include a bump in RAM, 64mb VRAM (why not 128?), and the 5200 HDD. Would dual monitor capability be asking to much? I've followed this thread for some time and really thought that today was the day. Can I wait until September or January? NO....but then I'm not making the marketing decisions, so I'll wait.

The mini is where the next generation of product design should go for power users, the Tower look is old school. The iMac was slick looking but now looks clunky (i agree it needs the 23" monitor for serious Graphic use), but I will NOT buy a G5. G4's rule in every way possible!
